Will you please upload more Rory Storm here pc?

I've always wondered why this once greatest band of Liverpool never really had a breakthru. Any clues?

Apparently they were stuck in a bit of a musical rut. Even after The Beatles exploded they refused to change from their rock'n'roll style. They probably could never have made the leap from popular dance band to  recording artists. And image wise they look like a million other r'n'r band.

Regarding those Rory Storm recordings - unfortunately that's not Ringo on the drums.

Ringo was, of course, the drummer for Rory Storm and the Hurricanes up until August 1962, however, Rory's first 2 singles were released in 1963 and 1964. Details as follows:

Dr. Feelgood/ I Can Tell

OK, thanks pc31, that was very nice.

Wonder what year it was that the Beatles "didn't come around too much anymore"?

RS&H just weren't that good, compared to the Beatles anyhow, IMO. No surprise that they didn't "make it".

Really sad to think about how it all ended for C.

I think (but I've never seen them!) that Rory Storm and the Hurricanes used to be a major attraction in the early days of Merseybeat. It's known that Rory had a spectacular stage act. He used to climb on almost anything and sometimes fell down. That attracted only more people to the shows. I also think that Rory Storm was a very Liverpudlian band. They missed the songwriting skills that the Beatles had and somehow did not succeed to put their energy (which they surely had on stage) on to a record.

Brian Epstein didn't manage Rory Storm at the time he recorded them performing 'America', a number they'd been playing in Spain which went down well. He acted as their recording manager (the only other group he recorded was the Rusticks). At the time their manager was promoter Arthur Howes. Rory had asked Brian to manage them a few years earlier, but Brian turned them down. Ringo said that he could arrange for them to record any time they wanted to, but after 'America' Rory didn't bother.

Why didn't he bother? Didn't he want to become famous like other Liverpool bands?

Interesting picture that. The background looks like the Star Club in Hamburg and on the right is Tony Sheridan? Plus there is the Beatles' basedrum, presumably from Pete's drumkit. Wasn't this picture discussed on Chazz Avery's site?

They broke the stage at the Kaiserkeller, this looks more like the Star Club. But on the other hand, Pete left his kit behind when he and Paul where sent home in December 1960 after they set a condom on fire in the Bambi Kino. But the drummer (the black guy?) is not playing on Pete's kit. A bit of a mystery to me. Why should Chazz swipe pictures?

I've read that in late 1961 Ringo got the idea of moving to Huston, Texas to be a factory worker.

Apparently he was frustrated with the fact that his band was not really going anywhere, after having played with them for a few years.

He wasn't looking forward to a third summer season at Butlins?

Has anyone read any more about that? (the Raving Texans)

Why Texas? Was he into John Wayne or John Ford?

In the book it's stated that Bill Harry let The Hurricanes down by not letting them win the famous poll, which put The Beatles on top and Rory & The Hurricanes on place #4. Rory seemed to have had the most votes, but because there were too many forms written with the same green pen, voting for Rory, these votes were called illegal. A pity for Rory, especially because other bands did the same thing of course.

Why didn't Rory and his band make it really big? 1. They were too limited musicians. 2. They stuck to rock & roll and the same repetoire when things were changing in other directions. 3. The Beatles stole their drummer.

I told ya!

From contactmusic.com:

Early Ringo Starr Tapes Unearthed

Recordings featuring The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr before he found fame with the Fab Four have been discovered in a basement.

The previously unheard sessions, from 1960, contain performances by Rory Storm and the Hurricanes - the band Starr played with prior to joining The Beatles.

The tapes, which feature tracks from a gig near Liverpool and a recording of a rehearsal at frontman Storm's home, were unearthed by Storm's sister, Iris Caldwell, in the cellar of her house and they are now set to be released on a new album.

She tells the Bbc, "I suppose these tapes have been in an old sealed box ever since (they were recorded)."

Starr left Rory Storm and the Hurricanes to join The Beatles as Pete Best's replacement in 1962, shortly before the band shot to fame.

Ringo doubts whether he's on the recording:

Yep....I was aware that Ringo is not the drummer on the recordings.  The Hurricanes (like a lot of the Mersey musicians) underwent many incarnations during the years they played together.  But Ringo's absence doesn't make their music any less enjoyable or worth listening to.  Rory Storm (Alan Caldwell) was a fascinating showman who shared the stage with the Beatles in Hamburg (as I'm sure you all know).  Thought it was remarkable that he stuttered---except when he sang.  Thanks Bobber...on top of things as usual.

It gets confusing, for the cover tells us it's a recording from 1960. I'm not sure hoe many times Rory played the Jive Hive, but he did play there on April 16, 1960. I believe Ringo was the bands drummer then. So either the date is wrong, or Ringo is wrong.

You're right about the dates, Bobber----this is posted on Rate Your Music http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/rory_storm_and_the_hurricanes (http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/rory_storm_and_the_hurricanes)

Also known as:              THE ALAN CALDWELL SKIFFLE GROUP
                                    THE RAVING TEXANS

But who knows...musicians back then seemed interchangeable from band to band---sitting in whenever somebody was sick or late or sodded off.  And wasn't it Ringo who said "I was too stoned to remember?"

Thanks for the article, Bobber.  So many situations remain unclear when it comes to the Beatles, and I often despair that we'll ever know for sure what's accurate.  Glad that Rory Storm and the Hurricanes are getting the acknowledgement they deserve.  One wonders what might have happened for a lot of the talented Merseyside musicians if just one or two circumstances had been different for them.

I have listened to the cd in the last few days. I must admit that Rory Storm and the Hurricans sound like a band with great power, certainly considering the date this was presumably recorded. But then again, the band itself is not that good as sources claim it to be. First of all, Johnny Guitar is not exactly the guitar hero. His guitar is dramatically out of tune from the very first song. Rory is not such a great singer, he sounds like he drank too much and make all the songs sound the same. That goes for the drummer -whoever it is- too. It doesn't sound like Ringo's style, but this is March 1960. Ringo could very well be developing his style. Bad timing, breaks out of place and a lot of use of the cymbals. Strange. Lu Walters sings a song too and he's a better singer than Rory. The crowd doesn't go wild at all, that is not verbally.
Still it's great to hear this band in a live recording.

I recently purchased the Tom Egbers book on Rory Storm. Took a lot of time to translate it from Dutch to English but enjoyed it and you could tell Iris must have had some input. I do not agree with Egbers assessment of the events leading up to and including September 1972 and you wonder if Iris was happy with the overall tone of the final chapters. Personally Egbers did not convince me it was a double suicide.
The Beatles come over fairly well and you do get a feel for the emerging scene that all the bands were part of. Some of the stories are new to me such as the case of Johnny Guitar and the unfortunate Elephant, Paul at Scout camp so missing a gig and Ringo nearly drowning at Butlins.

I enjoyed every moment of getting to know Rory and the other better.

I just used a couple of sites to change the jpg to a docx and then used google translate (just for personal use) . Took a couple of weeks and nearly drove me mad. It is an interesting book although I do not agree with the conclusion of the author. I must say I have not heard of anyone being interested in the translation and to be honest some of the text still did not translate properly but the essence of the book is there and some of the stories such as Alan's time as manager of the Morgue, The Beatles v RSATH mini bus chicken and the story of the unfortunate elephant at Skegness really bring the era, the band and Rory to life. I also am not ashamed to say that there were moments when the text brought me to tears. I do not think the book shows any disrespect to The Beatles.

The backbone of the book to me is actually family and friendship. I was actually staggered at the number of beatings the group took including Rory taking a brick to his head and also the amount of ladies they entertained . One of the funnier moments was seeing the translation come up regarding a picture of the band with some ladies and underneath the phrase girl feast came up, it took a while for me to stop laughing.

I am genuinely sad that they never made it an wish I could have seen them play but reading the book and visiting many of the existing sites I feel I have got to know RSATH, Rory's family and the scene that created them.

So thank you for the welcome.

I thought it was an interesting read as well, although I had some problems with the style Egbers used. He wrote the book as some kind of fiction, with dialogues and all that. I'd rather see it as a documentary.
Nevertheless, there were some good and new facts for me as well. I will have to reread the book to see whether I agree with the conclusion.

I'm pretty sure there's some members in here eager to read the translation. With or without the girl feast.

Hello Bobber. I did not mind the style of writing although now you mention it I wonder if the dialogue heavy style was a pre curser to a movie script. If you want a technical type of biography mentioning i.e. guitar brands this is not it, but I enjoyed the intimate style and it paints such a vivid picture of the times that all the Mersey bands emerged from.

I think you actually get a real feel for the personalities of everyone involved.

I could post recaps of the chapters but not sure if that breaks rules. Please could someone guide me on that.

Chapter 1 (Intro)

February 1972 Rory is living in Amsterdam and working as a DJ. He has arrived home to his tiny attack flat and been greeted by one of his neighbours holding a telegram addressed to Alan Caldwell. The telegram notifies him that his Dad Earnest has suffered a stroke and he must come home. Dressed in a white Afghan coat he heads home to Liverpool.

Chapter 2

The narrative goes back to the 1930's Earnest Caldwell works for The Automatic Telephone and Electric Company and is besotted by Violet Disley  a fellow worker who is fun and even though he is a rather quiet man he asks her out by singing to her. They are made for each other and marry in 1936.

Chaper 3

They move into 54 Broad Green Road and soon a baby is on the way. Alan Earnest is born on January 7th 1938. One of the first visitors is Len Disley Violets youngest brother who has bought a fire engine.
Sadly war is on the horizon.

Chapter 4

War breaks out Liverpool prepare, shelters are built and children evacuated. Violet and Alan stay he is 18 months old. Tragedy hits as Liverpool is bombed and many close to the Caldwell's die as a neighbouring shelter takes a direct hit. Violets beloved Len dies after his Red cross ship is sunk. Chapter 5

Ernest becomes a window cleaner while spending time doing charity work and trying to help his city. During the last year of the war Iris is born and it is now clear Alan has a severe stammer. He introduces himself at school as Alan Cornflake.

Chapter 6

In an attempt to "cure" his stammer Alan undergoes a lengthy period of hypnosis. It fails to help. Alan is a fun loving restless and energetic child who plays for hours in the bomb rubble and develops a habit of setting fires in the rubble to see the firemen arrive he is about 5 to 6 years old at the time.
As the war ends the family gets by on Ernie's limited income but Vi loves the cinema and Alan develops a passion for Liverpool FC and just as importantly Albert Stubbins. A player that Alan admires for all of his life. He attends home games as a boy and follows the team avidly.

Alan is not too interested in the school orchestra and joins the athletic team. He is a natural at the middle distances, and ends up joining the Pembroke Harriers and starts to catch the eye of the local press.

Roy Rodger and Trigger come to Liverpool on a publicity tour. The young Alan manages to see them both and this develops a fondness for the American western.

Alan's athletic training continues he is progressing well and he starts swimming and ends up swimming Lake Windermere.

Money starts to get tight for the family. Alan makes the unilateral decision to leave school and get a job so he can ease the burden and not only pay for the coaching he needs but also pay for Iris's dancing lessons as she is a talent in her own rite.

This all coincides with Violet have a mental collapse and ending up in hospital. She needs ECT to recover. Alan manages to get work at the Cotton exchange after worrying himself sick if he can get through the interview without stammering but he succeeds and Violet recovers.

He attempts to ask a girl out called Phyllis who has a crush on him at work (he knows this as he was tipped off she has clippings of him from the paper) He stammers and so the attempt fails and he is left depressed.

He continues to do well with the athletics and spends hours arguing with his fellow workers about the rivalry between Liverpool and Everton.

Again from the Book Rory Storm BY Tom Egbers (only available in Dutch at the moment)

Alan starts listening to Radio Luxemburg. Track such as Bill Haley's Rock around the clock are shocking and are a indicator that a new revolution  is just around the corner.

Rock around the clock has such an effect on Alan he even sings it when running in his athletic races much to the consternation of others.

With Skiffle and Rock n Roll taking hold of the Uk and Alan , he decides he wants a guitar. At the Cotton Exchange his workmates are discussing the Grand National (Iconic Horse race held in Liverpool for the overseas readers) . They are tipping a hose called Devon Loch and much to Ernie's frustration and disapproval Alan goes to the race and places a large bet on the horse to win. The horse is actually leading with only a couple of hundred feet of the race to complete when it belly flops on the floor for no apparent reason (you can see this on youtube I think) The horse loses and Alan is in shock and very angry.
On returning home on the bus he hears someone playing a guitar, he recognises that this person is someone who Alan has heard practising for  months from his bedroom window but could never work out who it was. The boy is Johnny Byrne. Noticing that Alan is deeply upset Johnny starts talking to him and lets him play his guitar. A friendship is born.
On returning home Ernie understands Alan's anger but this is what happens when you gamble. Ernie then hands Alan the money he needs to get a guitar as he respects that Alan has always taken on more than his share of family responsibly without question. Alan get his guitar.

Alan and Johnny are increasingly firm friends who practice their music and have dreams of a different future.

They both go to see Lonnie Donegan in concert and after the show bump into one of Alan's co workers. A Mr Jim McCartney who is there to pick up Paul who has also been to the gig.
That night the idea of them forming a band is born they play into the night and Alan finds he can sing without stammering. All this happens amongst the noise of parents shouting to them to be quiet and neighbours hitting the wall to keep the noise down. A band of sorts is born.

Bill Haley Plays Liverpool. Alan has a ticket but Johnny does not. Johnny sneaks them in to the gig in the morning by pretending they are electricity workers. They hide for the rest of the day only appearing in the crowd for the gig.

Al Caldwell and the Raven Texan's form with the line up of Alan, Johnny, Jeff Truman, Reg Hale and Paul Murphy. They are getting gigs and eventually get a spot at the Cavern.

The band gig a lot and cross paths with other bands such as The Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group who have a talented freelance drummer called Richard Starkey and the Quarry men who are described by the many as having a loud mouth but a great deal of talent. The man is John Lennon.

The Raven Texan's are now in need of a guitarist as their sounds is changing. Iris is thirteen and her fourteen year old boyfriend want to audition, he turns up and is sent away by Violet weho thinks its silly for the a fourteen year old to want to play with 17/18 year olds. The lad is upset and is called George Harrison. Alan and Johnny are staggered at his guitar ability even at that young age but he is just too young.

Alan feels that the band need to form a club of its own to play and be a meeting place for all the up and coming bands on the scene. they are able to access a basement of a villa through a Miss Thompson and start up The Morgue Club. They have painted it black with skeleton's on the walls and have hand built a tiny stage. The opening night is an unbelievable success, The Quarry Men play and Alan upsets iris by telling the packed club that Iris stuffs her bra with cotton he gets from work. Iris flees the club with George Harrison with George Harrison running after he to calm her down.

The Police are called often for noise by one particular resident who hates the kids and the noise. Alan spends hours chatting to the Police trying to establish a compromise even placing posters around the club asking the patrons to leave as quietly as possible. This fails and eventually the grumpy neighbours gets the club closed.

Johnny and Alan go to Butlin's in Rhyl for a lads holiday. Translation came up as a girl feast. The lads make a pact. Any girl under 18 and from Liverpool off the cards as they might get their heads kicked in by irate boyfriends. Boy they both have a good time enjoying plenty of female company, who would have thought Butlin's was such a hotbed for the nations youth in the 1950's. Alan nearly gets in a fight with a drunk over Alan O court being in the England football team Johnny sort of gets him out of the situation. Band going more Rock n Roll after seeing Cliff Richard on TV. George is in The Beatles and Lennon is still referred in the book as the front man with the big mouth.

Ringo Star crosses paths with the band again. He is miserable in his job and is a freelance drummer and on the point of emigrating to the US (was this common knowledge?)Johnny and Alan are now professional with Vi taking the bookings. Lads off again on a lad's hols this time in Pwllheli where again the ladies are entertained by the charms of our hero's. Alan wins a swimming contest and as he is awarded the prize (in little more than his trunks)one bloke heckles him with a derogatory comment to which Alan replies "That was not what your wife said yesterday" this leads to a dash to escape with their belongings and Alan trying to convince Johnny he could have took the bloke on. Johnny is suitable unimpressed.

The band play at The Cambrige Hall Southport. The audience are partly teddy boys and a massive fight erupts and knives are pulled show stopped and fight continues outside people are getting battered with chairlegs fight so bad even the band are involved and Johnny is really beaten up, but just manages to escape worse.

Band wants to play at the Casbah Mona Best has fallen out with the MoonDogs as Ken Brown was ill and the other three still played but only got three quarters of the fee with Ken getting the other 1/4

The Hurracaines play the Cavern to a jazz crowd and all hell breaks loose with the coin throwing audience ending the gig ewarly. Owner docs them £2 out of the agreed £4 fee however However Johnny got £6 picking coins off the floor which means they were ahead cash wise.

Johnny buys a second hand 1938 Jag that is unreliable and either breaks down or bits drop off. Johny smashes it into a kiosk and eventually sells it on for £25 Rory who was only bothered about Johny not buying a Hillman rues that this is because Johnny got it from Everton.

Another fight after a gig this time Ty takes on an irate boyfriend after he spends a show winking at a pretty girl in the fron row. Her boyfriend goes after him with Rory and Johnny stating they will back him up. He tells them to get inot the van and after knocking the bloke out jumps into the moving van. The mates of the unconscious man chase the can throw a stone through a window that hits Rory on the head. (there is a pattern forming here)

Rory meets John Lennon who is with Stuart Sutcliffe. They are obsessed with modern art and are at art school. The band seems to be without a drummer and on the back burner and now called Long John Silver and the Beatles. (not sure if that was translated correctly). Rory thinks the name does not work.

The Gene Vincent Eddie Cochrane show is put together with loads of local bands The Silver Beatles are invited as the promoter is trying to tell them that they need to be more like the more experienced and sharper bands like Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. Eddie Cochrane is killed Rory is distraught after the recent deaths of Buddy Holly and James Dean. The show goes ahead with Rory and the Hurricanes doing a staggering well received set. The Beatles are in the audience.

Larry Parnes is in town to audition the Liverpool acts. The Silver Beatles play and Stuart Sutcliffe plays with his back to the audience Larry offers Lennon work if they drop Sutcliffe. Lennon turns him down flat and is stroppy. Parnes is not impresses but Rory and everyone else is full of admiration for Lennon standing up for his mate. Ernie thinks Lennon's actions are of a great man. Violet gets a very well paid Butlin's gig for the band Ty looses his job and goes full time with the band after a row with his mum and dad. Ritchie is engaged and Geraldine is angry she rarely sees him, Rory visits the family to try and smooth things over so that Ritchie can do the gigs with the support of the family and Geraldine. An ultimatum is issued it is her of the drums. Ritchie is obsessed with the drumming.

The band play Pwllheli Butlins. More girls throwing themselves at the band Rory has own room so especially happy. Dramatic incident involving Ringo who cannot swim. Lou and Ty offer to teach him although he is not keen as there are plenty of kids about. He gives in and is making progress when Lou and Ty leave him in the deep end and he panics ands goes under. Rory notices that Ringo has been under for way too long as he has been diving from the 10 meter board he can see things more clearly. He make a massive dive from the top board and lands close to Ringo pulling him out of the water. Everyone is laughing except Rory who realises that was way more dangerous than the others thought. Rory spend night in bed with girl from Leeds whoses name he cannot recall but gets call that they can get work in Hamburg. They are excited all except Vi who is still upset about the war.

Hamburg is a real slog. Rory will not take pills to stay awake as he sees it as a challenge to his fitness. Also does not smoke. Miserable time for all Astrid takes the photograph of Rory, Stage is broken but Rory and band get beaten up. Beatles have it much worse and George gets deported. McCartney and Best get arrested for arson. All return home but Johnny is ill al the way home on the ferry.

The return home all battered by the Hamburg experience George looks ill to people. Stormville is born with the bands all returning after gigs to eat sandwiches and drink tea playing and chatting while Iris talks about dancing and Ernie reads his bible to himself. The Iron Door club holds all nighter's Liverpool is finding it's feet musically. McCartney tells Rory that they are off to Hamburg again and they are writing their own stuff. Priscilla White appears and starts singing onstage and gets attention from the press with Rory et al only mentioned as a afterthought. Pwllheli wants another band instead of Rory and offers them work in Skegness.

Both The Beatles and RSATH play New Brighton. After a fantastic night for all the bands they load their vans and end up heading to Stormville. It ends up a speed contest. Buses storming in wrong lanes, on two wheels and Jammo (RSATH driver) and Neil (Aspinal?) going through the Mersey Tunnel side by side. absolute chaos and RSATH wins the race. Ringo announces he has written to the Texan Chamber of Commerce to see about emigrating. Everyone is stunned Ty nearly batters Ringo for being disloyal stopped by Johnny. He takes a break from the band but is increasingly edgy. Rory get arrested for the I Love Rory graffiti in relation to the Mersey Beat poll and is relegated to fourth even though there are dodgy votes for The Beatles and RSATH. RSATH actually have a fan club and sometime Rory has to be rescued from screaming fans.

The Beatles and RSATH play for Sam Leach's engagement party and there are a couple of wonderful photos of Rory who has never drank alcohol before appearing  trolleyed. Lennon ends up asleep in a bath. Off to France to play for the US forces and Rory buys the purple Vauxhall Cresta. Stuart Sutcliffe tragically dies.

Things just got rather weird even for the heroes of out story. Band at Skegness a fight break out in the audience which is exasperated when Johnny accidently is overheard swearing on an open mike at the brawlers. They turn on the band Rory only gets away by dodging them on some train tracks but Johnny get surrounded. He actually jumps into a pool from a rooftop in the dark which seems to be smelly and full of rubber and the crowd run away laughing. He does not understand why until talking to a barman he is told that an elephant on loan to the camp died in the pool (probably from heart attack) while being washed and despite the best efforts of a crane was still in the pool.

Johnny gets into trouble with the management for getting caught sleeping with a guest and the band nearly get fired. A compromise is reached. Johnny can play but not live on site. He and Ringo hire a caravan and live on the other side of the camp boundary with Rory sneaking them meals. Lennon and McCartney come to the caravan and tell them all that Pete Best has been fired and they want Ringo for the Beatles. Ringo immediately says yes arguments break out between everyone and Ringo. Rory is shocked as they have no drummer. They eventually get a red coat to help out but the management say they will not be hiring then band again.

Ringo and the band have a mini fallout as Ringo wants his money back on the stage costume while Johnny wants money for the caravan. Things are settled quickly and friendships remain. Iris is seeing both Paul and Frank Ifield which annoys Frank. Incident with Toby and Paul leading to a lot of tears for Iris and Rory is furious and Violet receives  the very odd teeth letter from George. Band are now struggling loosing drummers and Rory not only does the diving board summersault during a gig but has two accidents one lands him in hospital. They record for Oriole but only get limited success. The Beatles are on their way to superstardom. Johnny and Rory need a new direction and new management.

Rory is at Anfield when the Liverpool sound hits the terraces. He is moved to tears with both joy and sadness that all his mates are hitting it big but not them. Epstein offers to record RSATH. It does not go well with their normal fare not getting Epstein's attention and America is way too pop for Rory's taste but that is the only track that gets done. Ringo Iris and Shane Fenton (now Iris's boyfriend) are on backing vocals. The Beatles tour the US. RSATH tours Mallorca and Ibiza.

They record the single America that flops and the work starts to ebb away. Paul sings Yesterday on TV after telephoning the family to watch especially. Lou Walters leaves. Brien Epstein dies and The Cavern goes bankrupt. RSATH are there on the last night playing as per usual and actually barricade themselves in to the Cavern to try and stop the bailiffs gaining entry (this despite not getting paid). Rory is stunned that Paul and John are at the 1966 cup final supporting Everton as he thought Lennon was a red. Albert Stubbins is on the cover of Sergeant Pepper and Rory just does not get the new Beatles sound such as Tomorrow Never Knows. Ty Brien tragically dies unexpectedly and the band eventually break up.

Rory is engaged to a stunning dancer (name and photograph in the book) None of his relationships have lasted more than a week. Her family insist he does a normal job, he works as a taxi driver and gets arrested for swearing at the other cabbie. He insists he could not get the word "For" out fast enough as his stammer is back with a vengeance.

He is fired and lasts only 6 months working on a boat. He then is let go from working in a hairdressers again for his stammer. On holiday with the fiancé, he is devastated one day when looking for her to find her making love to another man on the beach who she then introduces to him (again name provided) Rory is shattered and breaks off the engagement. His parting words are "Get your parents to get him an office job" He sells the Vauxhall Cresta.

A Dr (speech Therapist) tells him to forget about his life in show business. He must adjust to normal life. Rory is struggling with his stammer but takes a job as a door to door salesman selling stationary. He is mistaken for another vocalist by a customer and flees Liverpool after working as a Deejay and as a water ski instructor he befriends two German circus performers. They sell him a Cadillac. He then drives to Amsterdam to find work.

He enjoys Amsterdam finds work and learns a little Dutch and settles in with an arty crowd. He lives in and attic and has his parents over for a visit. At the beginning of 1972 a telegram arrives to inform him his Dad has had a stroke. He leaves Amsterdam wearing an afghan coat and arrived three hours too late and his father has passed. Things are hard; Violet is a mess Rory is increasingly detached from his social group Vi needs more ECT. Rory has on going dental appointments for tooth ache and Iris is only living a couple of minutes away from Rory and Vi. One night Iris tries to contact them. No sign of the pair and Iris asks the neighbours to check they are ok. On entering the house a suicide note is found written by Violet. Rory dead in bed with sheet over his face. An empty whisky bottle on the nightstand and a bottle of pills with 5 left from the hundred on the label. Apparently it is later recorded that he has a thimble full of whiskey and only 10 pills in his system. Violet has drunk 4 glasses of whisky and an empty whisky bottle is on the nightstand. She has taken many tablets (approx. 40). I have to be careful as this is a translation. I did check twice and that are the figures that came up.

A funeral is held. People are just stunned.

I know the author is trying to make a case that Rory took his life but it is just odd how the ultimate showman would go out like that with no note knowing his sister would be the person to find him.

The book acknowledges contributions from everyone from Iris to Mike McCartney to Ringo Starr. The majority of the people in the book come over very well. Ringo comes over as someone who is eternally restless The Beatles as a band who were in a shambles before they started writing and getting their act together. RSATH were let down on occasion and were also lost because they were a live act when the art of the studio and the songwriter come to the fore. Rory, Johnny, Ty and the rest of the band come over as wonderful raucous funny lads who loved playing music and living the rock n roll lifestyle and it has been a pleasure to translate the book.

Oh and Rory liked the Rolling Stones.

Uppreciate, Pothos.

[...]

Devon Loch Grand National Disaster, 1956 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62fPLtL8h7s#ws)

"Devon Loch Grand National Disaster, 1956. One of the most famous Grand Nationals of all time where the late Dick Francis gallops towards the finish line on HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's horse, Devon Loch. Dick  is just yards away from the finish line and is undoubtedly about to win the race when Devon inexplicably jumps up and falls to his stomach. It looks as though the horse sees a fence in front of him. ESB, the horse behind, swoops past Devon Loch who is still scrambling to his feet and wins the Grand National. The Queen Mother famously said, "Oh that's racing" and Dick Francis retired from racing the following year and turned his hand to crime writing."

Also been reading on Bill Harry's site that Rory changed his name by deed poll is this actually true as in the book all the paperwork in the book regarding the events of 1972 are under the name of Alan Earnest Caldwell. I wonder if it was an urban myth.

To the mod.

As these posting have focused on the Tom Egbers book of the life of Rory Storm. do my posts need to be moved to the book section or is it suitable to remain on this thread.

Is there a consensus about how many copies of the acetate that the Beatles and the Hurricane's recoded together in Hamburg. On translating Tom Egbers book on Rory Storm Alan Williams purchased four copies but their seems to be wildly differing versions of how many were actually made and the fate of the others

I'll reading the new Mark Lewisohn books in the next weeks. I hope there's some answers in there. I believe Allan Williams mentions four copies as well in his book. Not that this source is regarded reliable.

I found this shot on the Bill Harry site and there seems to be some confusion on this shot which is Rory Storm and The Hurricanes towards the end of the bands career.

I can spot Rory and I think the man on the bottom left is Ty but which is Johnny Guitar and does anyone have any more information on this picture.

yes from the 60s....i think they failed miserably... stole this bit....
n 1967, at the age of 26, O'Brien collapsed on stage during a performance, and later died due to complications after an appendicitis operation.[42][43] Storm disbanded the Hurricanes and became a disc jockey, working at the Silver Blades Ice Rink in Liverpool, in Benidorm (he was also a water-skiing instructor there) in Jersey and Amsterdam.[4] When Storm's father died, he returned from Amsterdam to Liverpool to be with his mother. He developed a chest infection and could not sleep properly, so he took sleeping pills.

This is intriguing as I have read a lot on RSATH and that is the first time I have read that the post the band was renamed after the death of Ty Brien. I know they only did a handful of dates then split.

Could you tell me your source as it is nowhere online or in the books I have read and translated and so brand new information. It looks right regarding the image as this is obviously late 1960's early 1970's.

Also Rory rocking the Thin White Duke image (again must be late 1960's) has always intrigued me.

Also if any Beatles fan or person has any knowledge of the later years of RSATH 67 -72 please can you add to this thread.

I noticed that Stormville still stands but the property where The Morgue Cellar was and where George auditioned and then joined the Beatles is gone. A new property is on the original footprint so if anyone has info on;

The original cellar was known as Balgownie at 25a Oakhill Park.

So if anyone has info on.

The Morgue cellar (original pics of that building)
Any information on the Beatles appearances at the Morgue.
Anything on the band The Hi Fi which was the band Ty and Lu were in previously to RSATH.
Anything on Ty and Lu where in Liverpool they were born etc.

Thank you

My first recollection of Alan Caldwell is of a young man fair haired lad surging past me and several other runners over the last half mile of the Waterloo road Race in November 1956, sing the song “Rock around the Clock” at the top of his voice.
It was the late 50s with the emergence of rock and roll and all that went with it. I suppose it was an early indicator of Alan’s inclination towards a “rock and roll” lifestyle he eventually adopted.

Still, after reading the specific parts in the Mark Lewisohn books, I can understand why Rory was left behind. He was big in May 1960, but the Hurricanes' show didn't change or even improve for the years to come. Even the Hamburg folk (Klaus, Jurgen, Astrid) remembered that while The Beatles tried to put on a different show even every other night, The Hurricanes just kept repeating themselves over and over and over again. Their songs and stage show stayed the same for years. This must have bored their audience and probably turned them off. Rory wasn't the greatest singer in the world and listening to the Hive Jive recordings, the band was not as good as they were supposed to be. By the time Brian Epstein recorded them (America), it was 1964 and The Hurricanes had already missed the first boat.

Hi All

I have just joined the forum. I have been on here reading this thread for a while. As you can see from my name I am a big fan of Rory and the lads.

I have come on here as I have just released a book on Kindle about the band. It has input from Rory's sister Iris, Bass player Walter Eymond/Lou Walters, ex drummer Jimmy Tushingham, Roadie Jamo Jamieson, Ted Kingsize Taylor and Sam Leach among others. It also contains over 140 photographs, many unseen before in public, some with Ringo on. It tells the story of all the guys in the band. The funny times and the tragic.

It can be downloaded on any device and read, Laptop, phone, Ipad, tablet, Kindle etc. It is available in most countries and for the next few days is on offer at £3.99 in the UK and $6.06 in the USA.

This is the UK link for Amazon  http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B015U9A6AY? (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B015U9A6AY?)*Version*=1&*entries*=0

I will be sticking around this forum and may add a little to this wonderful thread.

Take care all

The Jive Hive CD is May 1960. Before they went to Butlins or Hamburg. Not a great recording no. But bands improved, Remember, The Beatles were not considered that good until after Hamburg. The Hurricanes did change their set, but they were big Rock n Rolls boys. Rory was not a great singer, Lou was better than him. But as a showman he was probably one of the best around. They were a top Liverpool band. You do not get to be that if you are not that good.

No, that is another false account that appears in many books. Rory did not change his name by Deed poll. I have seen his passport from 1972.

Unfortunately I have never seen Rory and the Hurricanes perform live, so my ideas are based on what I think are reliable sources. Yes, I believe they were big rock 'n roll boys and stuck to it. Somehow it looks as if they stuck that much to it that it seems that the world around them was changing while they still stuck to rock 'n roll. It's the same feeling I get when listening to The Beatles albums: the covers they did, did fit in on the first albums, but they became more and more out of place. Mr Moonlight and Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby from Beatles For Sale and Dizzy Miss Lizzy from Help! were great songs and monsters in the Beatles repertoire a few years earlier, but lost their merits by the time they were recorded by The Beatles imho.

Sadly they never adapted and that is life.

Rory was made for Glam Rock. He was Glam Rock a decade before it was invented. Sadly he passed away on the eve of it. We will never know now what may have been.

But Rod Stewart had clearly seen his act. Even down to the leopard skin pants and boots that Rory wore.

Many Mersey Beat people say that when they first saw Rod Stewart they saw Rory.

Hmm. And was Rory original in doing this? Or was he in his turn influenced by an earlier source?

I think the only way to describe UK Glam Rock is Rock n Roll with fantasy and sci fi influences.

If you look at the bands such as the Sweet and The Faces (Stewarts band) you can see trace it back to even Elvis and his multi-coloured jackets but Rory had style unique to his era and if you check Rod he was everything from a mod to Beatnick while Rory was at his prime so who really knows

I think that’s right. It surprises me now when I hear an old Sweet song or similar bands, how so much  of it is basic three chord rock and roll. With shiny suits.
