"Somebody To Love" was the first hit by Jefferson Airplane and a genuine representative of the San Francisco sound. It was released as a single in April 1967, peaking at #5 in US (certified as a gold record). The original version had been made by another local band called the Great Society. Both versions were sung by Grace Slick; and the song was written by her brother-in-law Darby Slick. The newer and most well known recording could be considered as one of the first definitive acid rock songs along with "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix. This new sound was raw psychedelia, including high energy vocals, thunderous bass and a blistering guitar solo. A spring flower announcing the soon-to-come summer of love.

The note Grace holds at the 2:15 mark makes the entire song for me. If that wasnt in there, I wouldnt like it near as well. Good song overall.

I got to hear The Great Society's version, Someone To Love, prior to The Jefferson Airplane's version thanks to visiting Greenwich Village several times in 1966.

We're fortunate to have The Great Society's live performance at The Matrix on CD today...

I haven't thought too much about this song to be honest. It's one I usually only hear when it pops up on movies set in the 60s. Usually sounds cool when it does. It's got a bit of bite which is good. A pretty decent tune.

I'd never heard the Great Society's one before but it already has that West Coast sound.

I'd like to make a special tribute to Jack Casady: in my opinion he was the Jimi Hendrix of bass players. As an example, this live rendition of "The Other Side Of This Life" is constructed on his extraordinary virtuosity.

I didn't think Jack deserved that title Hombre_de_ningun_lugar!, innovative yes, good player yes.....but miles away from the guy who is regarded as the true Jimi Hendrix of bass, by millions of bass players, Jaco Pastorius, this guy had complete mastery of the electric bass and played very intricate stuff, almost impossible to emulate by even advanced bass players like myself.
Tragic that, like Jimi, Jaco died young.

I know Jaco Pastorius was a legend and he's usually the most recognized bassist. But Jaco was younger and appeared later in the scene. I was actually referring to the 1960's, because Jack Casady was contemporaneous to Jimi Hendrix. They even played together.
