I told him that I was 16 and 17 and watched it too but enjoyed watching how their songs evolved. I remember telling him that I went to see Head twice in the theater. We discussed the "black box" for a while too. When I said so long to him, I said "It was such a pleasure talking with you, Mr. Thorkelson." He gave me a smile I'll never forget as he shook my hand.

The hits are often wonderful ('Pleasant Valley Sunday', 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'Daydream Believer') but many of their lesser known songs are equally as good.

Off the top of my head.....'Circle Sky', 'Forget That Girl', 'What Am I Doing Hangin' Round', 'The Porpoise Song', 'Listen To The Band', 'For Pete's Sake', 'You Just May Be The One', 'As We Go Along', 'Daily Nightly', 'The Door Into Summer'.....all sensational.
If any of them had pitched up on a Doors, Stones or (even) Beatles LP in the mid-to-late 60s no one would have batted an eyelid.

The Monkees were a phenomenon here in the US, Moog. It surely helped having weekly TV exposure of their songs.

Actually, Michael Nesmith admitted (boasted?) in a recent podcast interview (Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Collossal Podcast) that he was the source of that factoid, and completely made that number up.

He was being interviewed by the NYT, and told the interviewer ahead of time that he was going to lie to him. During the interview, he convinced the NYT interviewer that the Monkees were still doing great, and in fact worldwide sold 35 million records last year (1967).

Sure enough, when he picked up the paper with the interview in it, the NYT had reported his lie as fact. And of course the factoid was picked up by Rolling Stones, and pretty much everyone else, and is believed by most to this day.
