Ignored gems
« on: March 04, 2014, 08:53:12 PM »

Often ignored gems (songs) by often ignored artists.

"Sitting By The Window" (Moby Grape, 1967). A magnificent ballad, with amazing harmony vocals and inventive guitar playing.

Moby Grape - Sitting By The Window

"Pride Of Man" (Quicksilver Messenger Service, 1968). The San Francisco sound given to this folk/gospel song (love those apocalyptic trumpets!).

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Pride Of Man

"Calico Lady" (Poco, 1969). An enjoyable, quite beatlesque pop song, including great acoustic guitar work.

Poco - Calico Lady

I'll throw a couple of em up.

'Trishalana' (Paul Revere and the Raiders) - I forgot all about this one. I used to dig it when I partied and just heard it the other day.

Paul Revere & The Raiders - Trishalana

'Too Many Fish In The Sea' (Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels) - I was never a big Mitch Ryder fan, but when I heard this Marvelttes cover, I realized how good they really were.

'Bushfire' - The B-52's - Probably my favorite sng they ever did. Kate Pierson has one of the best female voices ever in popular music in my opinion and when she and Cindy Wilson bounce lines off of each other, its purely magic. Charley Drayton does the drumming on this song (I believe) and I cant tell you how many times i've sat in the basement playing along to this one.

Something about the guitar in this really grabs me. It's hard to explain but it's provoked a real emotional reaction. Like I've heard it so long ago I've forgotten

Here's one from me. This was a reasonable hit for the co-writer Tim Finn in Australia. But I love this version from the other co-writer Richard Thompson. He's not a very widely appreciated artist, although he's well respected in musicians circles. I think this song and his version deserves a wider audience.

Nice song this too. It sounds intimate.

Yes, sounds like a free, unstructured guitar; psychedelic influences can be heard there.

It reminds me to another song by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band (which was recorded later, I think) whose guitar has a similar spirit. The ambient of this song is interesting though the song itself is long and repetitive.

I really like this. I will be checking them out.

Try "Eighteen Is Over The Hill", that's another fine song by them (I mean the WCPAEB, not the early Van Morrison's band).

Inspired by seeing a young, hip couple from North London (I liked them!) sifting through records and studying the sleeve to 'Emotions' by The Pretty Things on the TV last night ('Location, Location, Location'), I dug out the four Pretties' LPs from the 60s and will give them a concerted listen this week.
The debut is fair, but does pale alongside the Stones' first two LPs, but the revelation for me is the second LP, 'Get The Picture' (December 1965). If you like 'Out Of Our Heads' era Stones, you will love it.
I'd certainly rate it higher than the slightly over-rated (but still relatively little known) 'S.F. Sorrow'.
