Here's my categorization of British Invasion bands:

First rate: The Beatles; The Rolling Stones; The Who.

Second rate: The Kinks; The Yardbirds; The Zombies.

Third rate: The Animals; The Hollies; Them.

Fourth rate: Dave Clark Five; Herman's Hermits; Manfred Mann.

You might just enjoy 60s music more if you wouldn't always be categorizing things.  We didn't do that back then and enjoyed The British Invasion waves of artists for what they all had to offer whether it was folk, rhythm and blues, rock, or pop and whether they were bands or vocalists.

Anyway, we were all floored when we heard this for the first time in the summer of 1964...

Arguably the first folk rock hit song.  Not bad for a "third rate band."  Even Hilton Valentine  is laughing at that categorization.    :)

I enjoy 60's music more than anyone, but that doesn't stop me from considering that some bands are better than others. And that's just my personal categorization anyway, so no one should be offended.

By the way, I think the Animals recorded 5 immortal hits: "The House Of The Rising Sun", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place", "It's My Life" and "Don't Bring Me Down".

And I can't find an album from them deserving the label "masterpiece".

"I'm Going To Change The World" was the B-side of "It's My Life" and I think it ranks up there with the most well known hits of the Animals.

Oh no! Now I’m going to have one of those dreams where I’m back in college. I wonder what the problem will be this time?

I get those too, Kelley.  One of the hallmarks of achievers, I guess.

I thought I was just nuts. I’ve had some real doozies covering everything from high school to college but they always end the same: I always remember that I graduated in 1981 or 1984 and I don’t have to do whatever it is I’m struggling to do. It’s a great feeling!

Bob Dylan cited this #1 hit by The Animals as a reason he went electric in 1965.   Turn! Turn! Turn!: The '60s Folk-Rock Revolution by Richie Unterberger.

That song has such a fascinating history. It exemplifies the very definition of folk music. It’s one I’ve loved since I was about three years old. I remember my brother playing the chords for it while I strummed the strings on his guitar. I hoped to do it all when I got bigger but my hands must have stopped growing not long after that.  ha2ha
