Title: RIP Jimmy Buffett
Post by: Normandie on September 02, 2023, 08:30:36 AM
It's not likely anyone here will care, but Jimmy Buffett has passed away.  :'(

RIP Jimmy. This one hit very hard. I am a huge fan. "The Weather Is Here, I Wish You Were Beautiful" basically sums up my desire to escape North Dakota for the tropics.

I can't get the YouTube video to upload. Whatever.   :(

https://youtu.be/MZH-QtdQ71k?feature=shared (https://youtu.be/MZH-QtdQ71k?feature=shared)

He worked hard all year
Just wanted a few weeks alone
But his old lady's into modeling
She can't get away from a phone
Besides, she b****es about the mosquitoes
She says, down there, there is nothing to do
Her goddamn phone never stops ringing
He'll try the service in a day maybe two

Well, he's on his third drink
Before the wheels of the plane leave the ground
Makin' points with the stewardess high over Long Island Sound
She's also spending some time on the island
Too much city madness gives her the blues
They make a date to go dancing and dining
It seems neither has that much to lose

The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
My thoughts aren't too clear but don't run away
My girlfriend's a bore, my job is too dutiful
Hell, nobody's perfect, would you like to play?
I feel together today

Well, now that's just the start of a well-deserved overdue binge
Meanwhile, back in the city certain people are starting to cringe
His lawyers are calling his parents
His girlfriend doesn't know what to think
His partners are studying their options
He's just singing and ordering drinks

The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
The skies are too clear, life's so easy today
The beer is too cold, the daiquiri's too fruitful
No place like home when you're this far away
I don't care what they say

He's goin' back to New York pack it up and let everyone know (back to New York)
It was something that he should have done such a long time ago
Still, time to start a new life in the palm trees
Ah, Billy Clyde wasn't insane
And if it doesn't work out, there'll never be any doubt
That the pleasure was worth all the pain

The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
The skies are too clear, life's so easy today
The beer is too cold, the daiquiri's too fruitful
No place like home when you're this far away
I need time for to play

While I am not a huge fan, I think most will say it is sad and noteworthy to have another artist from the greatest generation of music pass away.  RIP

I didn’t see that one. That is sad. RIP Jimmy.

"Paul McCartney reportedly visited the Grammy nominee at his home within the last week to sing to him."

I knew he and Paul were friends, but this really struck me. How kind of Paul to do this.

I saw a tweet from Paul re Jimmy.  Paul played on one of his last recorded songs as well.

I saw that. I thought it was so beautiful and touching.

Oh, now that I did not know. I'll have to track it down, if you'll pardon the pun.  ;D

By anyone’s standards this is simply a great song.

I love that song but never realized that was him.

My son stayed at one of Jimmy Buffet’s places when he was working in Puerto Rico. He was eating lunch and happened to glance over at another table and there was the man himself!

I love that song. In some ways his mellower stuff reminds me a lot of Eric Clapton's slower, relaxed songs (e.g., from the 1970s).

What a great story, Kelley! My older daughter is a fan and was in Puerto Rico a couple of years ago. I'll have to relate your anecdote. She'll be envious.

My girls were pretty upset when I texted them the news, especially my older daughter:

He didn’t approach Jimmy. He didn’t want to bother him and I think he felt a little guilty. He had literally just thought he might be ready to hear something besides Jimmy’s music everywhere he went at the resort. lol

My daughter would never have approached him, either—neither would I—all of us are rather shy, although he comes across as a down-to-earth person.  :)  Still, that's so cool that your son laid eyes on him.

Neither of us ever got to do the classic "Fins" move  :(  (1:25+ in this video):  https://youtu.be/HR6doSTLe4o?feature=shared (https://youtu.be/HR6doSTLe4o?feature=shared)

It’s so sad when someone who made our life brighter departs.

I found this article on Jimmy Buffett's music quite interesting: https://theconversation.com/the-beautiful-pessimism-at-the-heart-of-jimmy-buffetts-music-213043 (https://theconversation.com/the-beautiful-pessimism-at-the-heart-of-jimmy-buffetts-music-213043)

The theme of escapism is one thing that appeals to me tremendously about his music, now more so than ever in this (ugh) election year and amid skyrocketing rent, insurance, gas, and grocery prices. I wish I could live the story relayed in "The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful":

I see Paul was at the tribute concert at the Hollywood Bowl a few days ago (beginning around 1:07):
