Title: Doctor Who
Post by: tangerine on April 15, 2007, 09:29:51 PM
I'm sorry but it's SO good that I had to start a thread...but who knows maybe I'm the only fan of it?

I think it's really cool how its one of the few television things which has been revived and started back in the 60s (though admittedly it has changed a lot)

I love the new series so far! I think David Tennant is an amazing actor and really does justice to the role  :)

anyway this may all be pointless if no one else cares for Doctor Who... let's find out!

To tell the truth I watched it just becasue of David Tennant. Never watched the early ones. But the DT ones are all right. Teeth and Claw are my fave ep.

I must say David Tennant is the best thing about it for me!  :)

I love the references to him being around in the past like in the sixties- as in the 3rd episode of this series when he has to leave his jacket behind and he says something like 'I'm going to miss it- Janis Joplin gave me that!'

David Tennant's English accent amazes me- how natural he makes it sound despite being really Scottish normally! love it

I've heard him on interviews and the like and he sounds exactly the same to me. He has a distinct northern twang in Dr Who. Though he might be more Scottish when with friends and family I don't think he's putting on an accent.  (he'd be lynched in Scotland if he did.)

you serious? to me his accent sounds extremely scottish when he isn't in character!

heres an average interview with him talking in his usual (very scottish!) accent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VdJGlaPTK0

and him as Doctor who: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qPPgxuNe5M

completely different I would say!  :)

Bugger me. Put me in a kilt and call me hamish - you're right. Though I'm sure (and I've got my back to The Loch here and Nessie's about to rip my haggis out) that he doesn't talk that scottish on english interviews. Maybe. Bugger.

anyone see it yesterday? God how much do I love David Tennant?

Only one Dalek left! How will he survive??!

I think the plot is pretty strong at the moment- after the first half of this 2-parter I was like WHAT?! thats RUBBISH but after this second half I'm back into loving it again.

What do peple think of the new female assistant then- as an actress?

Hasn't been on over here yet, but quite looking forward to it. I hope  the scenery still wobbles, and they only spent a tenner on the special effects!!!

BTW, re the scottish accent thing. It's quite likely that his accent is pretty much how you hear it in Dr. Who, but as soon as he crosses the border, or speaks to another scot it reverts to type. Got friends from Wales and Scotland just like that.

haha unfortunately the effects are very digital and over the top. I wish the Daleks still have sink plungers and a whisk as their arm things!

But about his accent again, I've seen stuff like outtakes of him on set, and he fluidly changes from scottish to non-scottish accent- like he will say 'oh no can we do that again?' in a very scottish accent then re-do the lines in his Doctor Who accent- so it seems like he's pretty scottish-accented all the while he isnt in character!  :)

What is his Doctor who accent by the way anyone? is it a bit cockney?

It hasn't. A shame, because they seem to have had the american market in mind. The Doctor used to be a string of eccentric mild mannered middle aged men with a giggly short skirted assistant. (all very english). Now it's all very flashy and sexy, witrh occasional US story lines and US actors. The success of programmes like Buffy must have been in their minds. I think it's as good as UK TV gets.

A television show where you can go anywhere and do anything in all space and time? That's as good as TV gets anywhere. Pity they usually settle on some alien invasion of Earth every week. They could do so much more.

I think I'm going to be out so will have to record it but I'm so thoroughly impressed by the standard of acting, production, script-writing etc. on this 2-parter! Blink - best episode by far!!! Amazing!

But... Saturday's was a bit of a disappointment - it builds to a sinister climax then turns into a cheap pop promo: "here come the drums, here come the drums"! It really spoiled the effect in my opinion.

Just one question, why does The Master make The Doctor old?

Last weeks was alright, I'm not really a fan of Russel T. Davies campy soap opera version of the show but on the odd occasion he writes a good story. This is one of them.

I actually think it's a great track but it was completely out of place in that episode.

So... what in your opinion was the worst episode of the whole of the NEW Doctor Who series (including Christoper Ecclestone's Doctor)? I absolutely hated that episode with Peter Kay - ridiculous!!

Well I am sad to say I have not seen the Christopher Eccleston ones! I foolishly didn't follow the series but hopefully will backtrack and watch them at some point! But in the David Tennant ones- the Peter Kay one was definately stupid (do you know who wrote that one? very weak episode) I also wasn't keen on that one where the kid draws pictures which come to life- definately not one of the best. I liked the olympic stuff though. But on the whole I thought that one was a bit dissapointing what do you reckon?

In contrast, 'Girl in the Fireplace' - that one with Madame de pompadour was absolutely fantastic! As with the 'Christmas Invasion' (the first Tennant one where people are brain-washed and climbing onto the top of tall buildings) and Doomsday (the final one with Rose) was teriffic!

I think Russell T Davis wrote that episode with Peter Kay (not sure). It was embarrassing!

I thought that drawing one was a bit naff too! And you're right, those Battle Of Canary Wharf episodes were excellent. Even beter because I work at Canary Wharf!!!! Haven't seen a Dalek yet though! LOL!
Title: Re: Doctor Who
Post by: on June 29, 2007, 09:18:11 PM
Yes the Peter Kay one was awful and the ones with those silly green farting things in Downing Street (Sounds pretty true to life actually) were pretty poor. Steven Moffat writes the best episodes of the new series, oh and Mark Gatiss.

With the out of place music, well that's the production team trying to be pop-culture, doing the whole Scorsese/Tarantino thing. I hope that by the time Series 5 turns up that Gatiss is the producer, no offense to Russel he's revived the show and revived it well, but he's said himself that the show needs a new air to it.

Change is Doctor Who, and it never comes a moment too soon.

what is the Brothers thing?
Well in VERY brief description, The Master aged the Doctor to be physically hundreds of years old (so he looked like a weird shrivelled dwarf thing) and had him imprisoned in a cage for a year. Before Martha escaped, the Doctor had told her to go all over the world telling the story of the Doctor and giving them hope- and telling them that at a very specific time a year later, they had to all use the power of their minds to think the word 'Doctor' all in unison. The Doctor had been spending his imprisoned year psychically tuning himself in to the Archangel network (created by the Master as a way to brainwash people into voting him into power basically) so Martha tricked someone cleverly to get her to be taken to the Master's place for the specific date and time that people had been instructed to think of the Doctor. Following a dramatic countdown, everyone thought 'Doctor' all over the world and he arose, radiating light and returned to his young physical form. He prevented Martha's Mum from shooting the Master and intended to keep the Master with him in the TARDIS in journeys to come, but then the Master's wife lady shot him. The Doctor pleaded the Master to re-generate but the Master refused to so it was all very emotional and the Doctor was crying and stuff- finally completely alone as the Master dies in his arms. Oh and then Martha decides not to stay with the Doc permanently but gives him a phone so she will blatently come back at some point so they said farewell. Oh yeh and Captain Jack IS IN FACT The Face Of Bo! So thats a nice twist

I really havent done the story justice- it was better than that so don't judge it on my apalling explanation!  :)

Doctor News:

Kylie Minogue is set to join David Tennant in the TV Christmas Special of Doctor Who.

The 39-year-old pop superstar is said to have a "major lead role" in the hour-long special called Voyage of the Damned, which starts filming in Cardiff in July.

The story will follow on directly from the ending of the third series which finished on Saturday.

Minogue said: "It is an incredible thrill to be joining David and the entire Dr Who production for this year's Christmas special. Dr Who enjoys a unique history and it is going to be very exciting to be a part of that."

The episode has been written by Doctor Who's executive producer and head writer Russell T Davies.

He said: "We are delighted and excited to announce that Kylie Minogue will be joining the Doctor."

He continued: "Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a joy and we feel very confident that this will be the most ambitious and best Christmas episode yet."

The fourth series of Doctor Who is expected to return in Spring next year.

Comedian Catherine Tate is to play Doctor Who's new companion, reprising her role from the 2006 Christmas special, the BBC has announced.

She will join David Tennant for the complete 13-week run of the new series of Doctor Who, which is due to begin filming in Cardiff later this month.

Freema Agyeman, who played the Doctor's companion Martha Jones in the third series, will return mid-series.

Kylie Minogue will be starring in this year's Christmas special.

Tate will be returning to her role as Donna, the runaway bride who found herself transported into the Tardis as she prepared for her wedding on Christmas Eve.

The episode, broadcast on BBC One on Christmas Day, attracted an audience of 9.4 million.

Donna was invited by the Doctor to travel with him at the end of the episode, but the invitation was declined at the time.

Tate was asked if she would like to become the Doctor's new companion at the press screening of the Christmas episode to which she replied, "I would love to, but no one has asked!"

Doctor Who's executive producer and head writer, Russell T Davies described Tate as an "absolute star" in The Runaway Bride episode.

"We are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series," he said.

"Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

Catherine Tate said: "I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who.

"I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

Agyeman, 28, is to play Martha Jones in three episodes of spin-off show Torchwood, which producers have said will "expand" her character.

She replaced Billie Piper, who left at the end of the second series.

The fourth series of Doctor Who is due to debut on BBC One in Spring 2008.

A Christmas special starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be screened on Christmas Day 2007.

Indeed I am  :) Because now in the UK, the current series has finished (the whole set of episodes with the Doctor and Martha as the assistant) So now theres no Doctor Who for a few months :( But on the little trailer of what is to come at the end of the final episode from this series, it showed a clip of the christmas episode- and the titanic comes crashing into the tardis! Looks dramatic! And then there will be the new series which starts at the beginning of 2008. But what I want to know is whether David Tennant is going to stay on for the 2008 series! He is in the episode for this christmas (2007) but the script-writers might have made the Doctor regenerate which would mean a new actor would play the Doctor! I hope Tennant stays on for another series- he is so excellent at the part! Are you familiar with the whole phenomenon of the Doctor regenerating? If not I will happily explain it  :)

I only started watching Doctor Who this year but caught up on the previous year's episodes by renting them- but my friend (who loves it and has watched it since she was a kid) had to tell me so much about Doctor Who stuff for me to understand it better! Stuff about the Doctor and the Tardis and random monsters which helped me to know what was going on better! haha now I generally understand it (but do get confused sometimes!) :)

I heard something about him regenerating ...then he doesn't look like the same person....

Yeh you have basically got it  :)- if the Doctor is ever really close to death- basically if he is dying or just about to die, he can regenerate which basically means his whole DNA is re-written and so he is the same person at heart but can completely change appearence and have new personality traits (and this is just something that all timelords can do) So there have been many actors playing the Doctor in the past (cos it all started in the 60s) but the Doctor only has a certain amount of times he can regenerate before he properly dies. And he only has two regenerations left...! So I don't know what the makers of Doctor Who are going to do when they have used up another two actors playing the part of the Doctor- but maybe this could be an incentive to keep David Tennant on longer as the doc?! I am absolutely joining in the praying that he stays  :D

Heres some Doctor Facts in case you didn't know some of them (I'm not a complete geek- this is copied and pasted from a website!)  :)

The Doctor is more than 900 years old.
The Doctor is always known as just 'the Doctor'. He has no proper first or last name.
The Doctor says he could fix the control which keeps the TARDIS in the shape of a police box, but he likes it the way it is.
The first thing the Doctor said to Rose Tyler the first time they met was "Run!" It was his advice to her to get away from the Autons.
The Doctor absolutely loves humans. He thinks we are "amazing" and "brilliant".
The Doctor was knighted by Queen Victoria. She gave him the title Sir Doctor Of The TARDIS.
If any of the Doctor's limbs are cut off within the first 15 hours of his regeneration cycle, they can grow back straight away. This was witnessed when the Sycorax leader chopped of the Doctor's hand in battle.
The Doctor has a wide range of gadgets including the sonic screwdriver, the psychic paper, which shows people what they want to see and of course the TARDIS.
The Doctor's home planet is Gallifrey and the rest of his race were destroyed in the last great Time War with the Daleks. He is now the only Time Lord left in the universe.
The Doctor's biggest enemies are the Daleks. He thought they had all been wiped out in the Time War, but he was very, very wrong. Even now there is at least one out there...
The Doctor has met loads of historical figures on his time travels including Charles Dickens, Madame de Pompadour and Queen Victoria.
Even though he's called the Doctor he doesn't like hospitals and says they give him the creeps.
The Doctor says that Time Lords "practically invented black holes".
The Doctor has two hearts.
The Doctor can feel the Earth revolving beneath his feet.
John Smith is the name the Doctor uses when he wants to disguise himself. When he met Queen Victoria he called himself James Robert McCrimmon.
The Doctor has no control of the body he will get when he regenerates.

haha there ya go- in case it is of interest  :D

Only two?

Well, you really think that if it comes to the end of the 13th Doctors time in the show and the series is stil succesful they'll stop it or come up with a premise where he continues?

That whole 12 regenerations thing was just a plot point from Bob Holmes back in Tom's time. The Master has been through 4 bodies after his 13th one, at least.

oh I did not know that about the Master! Thanks- interesting so I guess they will just find a way to extend his regenerations like you said. You see, I only know my stuff about recent Doctor Who episodes- I would love to backtrack and see some of the older ones at some point, and maybe some day I will!

haha yeh saw this a while ago- 'classical music'  :D

The Christopher Eccleston episodes are at last being repeated on BBC4- I look forward to watching them for the first time. Can't imagine Eccleston being a better doctor than Tennant though. Mainly I guess because he was never much into Doctor Who where as you can see in his performance that David Tennant has always loved it. Well, I shall see!  :)

wow yeh I heard about the Doctor who taking a break plan

But apparently in 2009 there will be 4 bank holiday specials (with Tennant in)

You never know he might be back for series 5! I wouldn't put it past him actually- he is doing a few months in theatre in 2008 so it is almost as though the Doctor Who schedule works around him- making it possible for him to return if he wanted to. But its good to have changes of Doctor every so often. My guess is that they probably haven't even decided themselves when David will leave or who will be next. Hmm who knows! I'm just happy Doctor Who just keeps on going  :)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with David Tennant as Dr Who in my opinion - he's the best Doctor since John Pertwee (and Christopher Ecclestone)!

I don't mind David Tennent as this Dr Who, although I don't like the show all that much, I think he will do a christmas special aswell if i am not wrong, with that person thingie!

Question regarding the Cybermen: Since DW returned to the airwaves in 2005, a newly redesigned Cybermen from a parallel universe have been shown via John Lumic in 2006. In the series one episode, "Dalek", they show a classic Cybermen head in a showcase in Henry van Statten's alien museum. There has never been any reference an/or appearance of the original Cybermen from the planet Mondas (accept for an appearance of the mask or two). Were they somehow wiped out in a battle or galatic catastrophe? Have they kept quiet all this time? Were they somehow written out? There's been no mention of what happened to them. Or could we see the classic Cybermen reappear again? Could we see a faceoff of Classic Cybermen vs. New Cybermen? Or Classic Cybermen and New Cybermen joing forces to fight the Daleks?

For once and for all, I think i would be a great idea if they did a flashback episode of DW where the 11th Doctor would tell what led to and happened during The Last Great Time War. Cast Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston to reprise their roles as the 8th and 9th Doctors, Timothy Dalton as Rassilon. Rebuild the TARDIS set from the 1996 DW movie. Show the events of what led to and happened during and after The Last Great Time War. And then show the Doctor's regenerating from the 8th to his 9th self and how the TARDIS interior got redesigned from the movie to the 9th/10th Doctors' TARDIS. And then to conclude, what brought him to Earth involving The Nestene Consciousness in the episode "Rose" that re-launched the series. This episode would bridge the 1996 DW telly movie to the current series.

I'm a big fan, although I've only watched the new series. Tennant was by far the best Doctor. Matt Smith is funnier and sort of charming, but sometimes I feel that he fails to create tension and excitement when needed. He always seems rather laid-back (compare Tennant's reaction when Rose is absorbed to the parallel universe to Smith's reaction to Amy's death and you'll see what I mean).

I'm really looking forward to the next episodes and I think Clara may just be my favourite companion so far.

The weeping angels episodes are always exciting and the Van Gogh one is a personal favourite of mine.

I always liked the Red Dwarf series. I thought it had the most origional writing and you couldn't ever get a cast of characters so perfect for the show!
