Kelley, thanks so much for sharing that. I had absolutely no idea that Glenn Miller fought in WWII and that he went missing. This is one of the things I love about this forum; I learn so much. I'd heard of Glenn Miller and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, of course, but after doing a quick online search after reading your post, Kelley, I see that there is a lot to learn about this man!

My younger daughter was whistling "Chattanooga Choo Choo" the other day, and I asked "Where in the world did you hear that??" That's not normally the kind of song I hear my girls humming or whistling. Turns out she heard it in PE when they were doing their dance unit. (So I had to sing her a few lines, just to annoy her, ha ha.) I was happy to hear that she's being exposed to music like that, actually. I try to play as much variety as I can in the car, but swing is one type I haven't really downloaded yet.

I'm glad that sparked your interest, Kathy. My parents were both in their 40's by the time I was born so I grew up with this kind of music around. It is very evocative for me; not just of the memories I have with them but as a soundtrack for imagining them in their younger days. They were both in the service during WWII and I often wonder what they might have been doing or thinking when these songs were played. This is my absolute favorite Glenn Miller piece:

It's ironic that parents in the late 30s and early 40s felt just the opposite when they saw their kids Lindy Hop...

Hooked On Swing Dancing

In the same week that Elvis started recording his wonderful Sun songs, Lonnie Donegan recorded 'Rock Island Line' in, I believe, the same studio where the Beatles did their Decca audition.
The song was buried on an LP and, for a reason no one seems to remember, it was released as a single at the end of 1955.

1964:
First Stones LP and number one single.
First Who 45, as The High Numbers.
First Kinks 45.
First Yardbirds 45.
First Animals 45.
First Them 45.
First 'Top of the Pops' (an anniversary almost completely ignored, presumably because of all the Savile stuff).
Death of Sam Cooke.
