Phobias
« on: February 02, 2009, 08:03:26 AM »

So, what are you really scared of?

Fish are my biggest phobia. I think they're the most disgusting creatures on earth. Seriously, if you want to freak me out you'd have a better shot with a goldfish than with a tarantula or a snake...

^  Do you eat fish, though?

I'm not crazy about some fish.  I don't think they're a phobia for me, but some look really disgusting.

I am afraid of...

Spiders/insects
The dark (if I'm all alone)
Ventriloquism dummies
Really violent/scary films
Shots, blood, doctors, needles...maybe anything medical-related.

No. And not just because I'm a vegetarian, even when I still ate meat I never ate fish.

I'm ok with most creatures i can pick up a Spider or Snake , not keen on Rats but it's more the vermin aspect with them rather than a Phobia .
I think Dolls maybe i've had nightmares were i'm been chased by Dolls , those one's with glass eyes that blink when you move them are spooky (afraid5) (crosseyed5)

Flies. They make me physically ill. I wouldn't say it was a full blown phobia, but it's pretty bad.

I also have no problem with snakes. I once had a friend who kept them. I had one on my lap and another around my shoulders, both fell asleep listening to Marillion!

I am scared of insects.
And lately I`ve found that I am scared of elevators, being stuck in them. About 3 weeks ago the elevator I was in got stuck. Though I stayed in it for only about 10 minutes and in a nice company (a very handsome guy happened to be there), I started to panic, it seemed there wasn`t enough air, and I felt I was about to die! It is really scary, those who had the experience are sure to confirm it.
And once the underground train had to stay in the tunnel for 20 minutes. It was awful, again seemed there was no air, impossible to bear the whole thing.

^ Scary yes, but is it a Phobia?

Phobia
"a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it."

I can understand your fear being stuck in an elevator, but do you now have an irrational fear of them? Does it, for instance, make you nauseous to think about them? I mean any elevator, not the time you were stuck in one.

I empathise with being stuck in a train tunnel. Once when there was a fire at South Kensington station my train was stuck in the tunnel for 3 1/2 hours. It was the kids that kept us all going! But I'm not scared of trains.

I have some family members with really weird phobias.

My mom has a phobia for buttons on clothes. She can't touch them. She once tried to explain it by saying that touching a button is like petting a beetle to her.

My brother has this weird thing that if he doesn't like a certain kind of food, he can't even stand to have that food within his sight. If you want to put a slice of cheese on your bread for instance, you've got to keep it out of his sight or he'll just walk away.

I have an uncle who is so extremely claustrofobic that he can't sleep next to a wall.

You are right. Then it`s not a phobia, cause I continue going in elevators and underground.

That's not a phobia but compulsive behavior.

Since I was little I've had this stupid irrational fear of garden gnomes.  I hate them with their creepy beady eyes and pointy hats....

What is it with people who stick garden gnomes all over their yards? I really don't see the appeal at all. Ech.
