Bob Dylan!

What a musician... Maybe not much of a voice, but most of the time it suits his music.

The thing I love about him is his eerie but subtle discontent with life and the world. He shows a strange displacement in his writing and I like it... I also love his stories...

My favorites are : The Hurricane, I Shall Be Released, Knockin on Heaven's Door, All Along The Watchtower, Blowin' In The Wing, The Times They Are A-Changin', Don't Think Twice It's All Right, Tangled Up In Blue, Forever Young, The Mighty Quinn, Like A Rolling Stone, Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35, A Hard Rain's Gonna Come, Maggie's Farm, Mr. Tambourine Man, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Positively 4th Street, the Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll and Ballad of a Thin Man.

Phew... And that's only his more popular stuff!... A lot of great music from this man, and it's time we pay tribute to him here!

Plus I'm going to see him next month!  8)

(He's also a fifth Beatle! He obviously inspired the Beatles around their "middle period"; he wrote "If Not For You" with George, too)

I'm going to see him in March. I can't wait! You'll have to tell me how he was. BTW, that's a cute pic of him!  Looks like Jacob a bit.

He captured his time well. Not a great fan but appreciate his role in the shape of musical history.

Bob Dylan defines the 60's just as much as the Beatles while he's still a mystery after over 40 years in the business. He is one of the greatest songwriters of all time with few equals but he's an average vocalist.

he didn't have a very good voice, but he knew how to use it. Which makes him a good musician as well as an amazing lyricist.
I like his music a lot, and I started to get into it after my dad gave me Freewheelin'. My favorite songs are Hurricane, Blowin' in The Wind and Like a Rolling Stone. and yeah, those are just his most popular ones.

Neil Young > Bob Dylan

What has Neil Young influenced? Sappy folk rock. I love Neil, but I think Dylan had a little more impact on modern music. Not that Neil hasn't written some amazing songs. He's just not in the same stratosphere as Bob.

And I know he influnced more than folk music people so don't start in. I was just being overly dramatic to make a point. He still isn't in Dylan's league though.

The Neil vs. Dylan thing is tough.  Dylan never wrote a song with the wonder of "I Am a Child" and Neil never wrote a song as empyrean as "All Along the Watchtower."  I'm glad we have both.  And I think Neil sorta defers to Bob.  I love when he played at the Dylan 30-Year tribute in the early 90s and called it "Bobfest" and then ripped into a helluva version of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues."

Dylan will be around for centuries.  I'm not sure even the Beatles will last that long.

I dont think you understand how big the Beatles are.
I mean, I know they will last, its more than music with the Beatles, its counter Culture significance, amongst other things. They will last. Trust me. The Music deserves that last wish. :)

Sorry, guys, just said that about the Fab Four to "yank" you Brits chain.  (Some of you are brits, I think.)

I think the best of the Beatles stands with the best of Bob.  But the real question is Donovan: will they still be listening to "Season of the Witch" two hundred years from now.  I hope so--the Led Zep boys rock that song.  Long live Mickie Most.

What would be really weird is if some revisionist historian a millenium from now--after several dark ages--sorts through all the cultural junk and decides that Herman and the Hermits typify 20th century popular music.

The only reason we have Beowulf is because the manuscript was found stuffed in a book jacket--we don't know if it's the best literature of its time, it's just what we have.

Could work that way for Peter Noone.
