I've got a full list of songs which I'll try and narrow down to a Top 25 by the end of the month.

I'm going to knock off 20 a day starting from now, starting with, sorry 'Pepper' fans', 'A Day In The Life'.

You should put a trigger warning before saying something like that.  :o

I managed to find a Top 8 that I don't think I'd ever leave off a Beatles playlist.

1 Strawberry Fields
2 Penny Lane
3 We Can Work it Out
4 Here Comes the Sun
5 Nowhere Man
6 Ticket to Ride
7 A Day in the Life
8 In My Life

With the exception of Here Comes the Sun I seem to be biased to mid-period Beatles, from Help to Sgt Peppers. And my selections aren't particularly imaginative. No dark horses really.

After this are a heap of songs that I find hard to separate. On a given day any number could fill the remaining two spots.  The ones that would vie strongest would be I think

Help
All My Loving
Eleanor Rigby
No reply
I'll be back
I'm only sleeping
For no one
There's a Place
All I've Got to Do
Sexy Sadie
She said She said
Norwegian Wood
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
I Am The Walrus
I'm a Loser
Every Little Thing
Something
Taxman

But really any number could come into contention.

Not normally a list man, but here we go (no surprises)
1. A DayInThe Life
2.I Am The Walrus
3. Rain
4. Eleanor Rigby
5. For No One
6. Here Comes The Sun
7. Hello Goodbye
8. Hey Jude
9. Tomorrow Never Knows
10. Something.

I have a difficult relationship with The Beatles. They were my first love, but our fortieth anniversary is coming up, and man they have some annoying habits.....I would rarely listen to anything pre 65 these days. Too shrill, too many songs about boys wanting girls to love them etc.
After our talk about producers I have to say my adoration of the above songs is as much about George Martin as Paul and Johnand George. I like a well obstructed, cleverly put together pop song me. And that they could go from the colourful swirl of Walrus and Rain to thei incenses of E
Eanor Rigby and F N O to the sheer joy of hello goodbye and here comes the sun

Kevin, I get your comment on pre-65 but for me it has gone around full circle and I included She Loves You, which I am guessing won't be on too many lists here but let me explain.

I heard it on my iPod shuffle yesterday.  Don't hear it very often but it invoked memories and love of the early stuff when I heard it.  As far as the song itself, to me it was the exclamation point on announcing their arrival.  I think many songs probably do it for different people (I want to hold your hand comes to mind) but from where music was and how She Loves You and the energy behind it and how they performed it makes it on the list for me.  Had to be life changing (I wasn't born yet) for many despite the simple boy/girl theme.  I like stories or journeys in songs, simpler themes pounded by chorus after repeated chorus have their place but usually I like the journey and layers which I think you are saying.

Sorry for the ramble .

I found my old list and I refuse to put myself through the agony of revising it (for now at least). It's in chronological order - I'd find it impossible to rank the ten songs in order of preference.

Please Please Me
Every Little Thing
I Feel Fine
You're Going To Lose That Girl
Nowhere Man
If I Needed Someone
Eleanor Rigby
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
A Day In The Life
Here Comes The Sun

Middle period clearly dominates for me then, but in contrast to Kevin I find the sheer energy of those early tunes more exhilarating, joyous and magnetic than the later material, for all its cleverness. More often than not I would listen to "She Loves You" in preference to anything off the White Album for example. It's all great of course, but in relative terms by '69 I can only really get enthusiastic over George's stuff.

It interests me how a "personal" list differs from a "definitive" one. Much as I adore them, by no stretch of circumstances could I honestly present "Every Little Thing" or "If I Needed Someone" as worthy of a career defining top ten. Yet "Yesterday", possibly "Love Me Do" and arguably "All You Need Is Love" or "Hey Jude" would be embarrassing to omit from such a key collection, even though they wouldn't get close to my personal selection.

I've got a lot of respect for their early stuff. And I agree it's got a great energy to it that diminished into subtler skills with the middle years. Please Please Me, I Saw Her Standung There, There's a Place, She Loves You, I want to Hold your Hand, It Won't Be Long etc were thrilling tunes and showed them beginning to put interesting twists in their songs.

But overall I just don't listen to them as much as the later stuff. I think they were at their best when they were still a real band working hard on getting just the right arrangement rather than the collective of soloists from the White Album on. Although Abbey Road I love because for one last time they seemed to put all the care and effort into arrangements that characterised the best of their middle period.

These are only relative views. I like all the Beatle albums in some way. But in choosing my best of the best, it seems my preferences become clear.

My daughter has taken to playing I Want to Hold Your Hand ballad style  on the piano (it's a young'un thing. I think it was done like that in that Across the Universe film).

One thing the ballad style brings out is the lovely melody and songwriter-style changes. It works quite well. Again it shows even early on they were getting really good at constructing pop songs. I much prefer the uptempo thrilling version of IWTHYH, but the fact it sounds so nice ballad style I think speaks to the strengths of the basic product.
