Best Lyricist ?
« on: March 15, 2008, 08:10:14 AM »

So Who was the best lyricist in The Beatles ? Is John really the best wordsmith or is it an underratted Paul , or even a forgotten George .

i think John wins this but not by as much as people sometimes make it out to be, they'll could all write deep and meaningful lyrics, Macca could write smooshy lyrics better than anyone imo, but Johns ability to write something that seems like absolute gibberish and make it seem meaningful put's him slightly ahead for me :)

They all have their moments but overall in the lyric department, John.

How they excel for me,,, it would be John - Mind & Soul, Paul - Affection, George - Heart. They still all covered a mighty wide pallette though.

Looking at The Beatles lyrics this morning you know there are some lovely images conjured up by their words . Your imagination can travel to these places be it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds or sitting on the sofa with Lovely Rita , it somehow all seems real ?
I love  John's surreal meanderings in his psychedelic songs, they contain some stunning use of the English language .
Paul is as different again from John , what i noticed looking at Paul's lyrics is there is great economy to his style of lyric writing he says what he wants with his words in a succinct fashion , Lovely Rita is a great example it skips along with the music and not a word is wasted ? but the picture is just as vivid as John's complex word - plays ? and many of his storey songs employ this economy of style , i think there very singable with nice little hooks " Give Us A Wink And Make Me Think Of You "
It's maybe why Paul had the hits later on he's a bit more snappier than John ? So ive gone with Paul although maybe not as literate as John , he's just as good  in my opinion , it's his ability to write more catchy lyrics that swings it  for me.
I've not forgotten George i will come back later with my thoghts on his lyric writing.

yeah, that's always the great thing about the Beatles lyrics, especially in albums like
Sgt Pepper & Magical Mystery Tour. i love getting into these magical lyrics, like lucy
in the sky, lovely rita, penny lane & Mr Kite. i love these imaginary places like
Pepperland, it just takes you somewhere else. i think both John & Paul were good
at this thing, but George just stuck to writing about real life.

It's been said that Paul's songs are more cheerful and optimistic and that John's are more deep and have an abstract kind of form.
I don't know much about George and Ringo's writing.
Who do oyu think writes better songs?

i think that george on his own writes the best lyrics. together john and paul wrote great songs, but a part they were just ok.

They were all great song writers but I always loved(heart3) George's songs, so I voted for George.

John.  On "Across the Universe" or "I Am the Walrus" alone.

true
I want to change my vote to none because I didn't consider all these great songs written by all of them
but I voted more on writing style

I go with John, but Paul certainly had it in him:

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Black bird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to be free

Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

I love johns lyrics, they always make me think. Paul's seem a bit more straightfoward
