February 9 ... 45 years ago today
« on: January 21, 2009, 11:17:21 PM »

1st Ed Sullivan Show. Beginning of conquering the world.

Paul looked so uptight at the beginning of that 1st show. They were perfect though. George came in and did harmony with Paul on "All My Loving" - note perfect. And John nailed everyone of those triplets on rhythm. Of course their voices/harmonies were perfect in general - what grace under pressure!

Remember the date! And, don't forget Valentine's Day 5 days later!

It's also amazing how Paul sings lead on the first two tracks and is shares lead with john in the other two and which his vocals are really standout when theyre singing together.

Was there a reason why John didnt sing lead on any tracks and was so quiet in the mix ? was he nervous or did he feel Macca would be the better choice for there first performance to america ? maybe not confident in his own vocals.

He was the Lead singer/Band leader surely he would have wanted to belt out one ? you would be led to believe that it was Paul and his band from that performance.

Yeah, FenderTele, I noticed that too. I wonder who picked the set list ... The Beatles? ... Brian Epstein? ... Capitol (afraid4) ?

Maybe it was just a matter of Paul's solo songs at that point (before AHDN) were more TV-appropriate than John's. Up until around that time, perhaps, John's biggest stage contributions were covers, which they probably didn't want to do.

Even the songs he does sing joint lead you cant even hear him, on purpose or just a problem with sound mix ? also this was there introduction to the Us and he totally took a back seat to Paul and it looked like it was Paul and The Beatles.

I  agree on the Covers things he possibly didnt have a decent song to put but he could have always went back to Please Please Me.

Yup! or so I would like to believe.

Some people here might think I am crazy for saying, but I do think I was alive during the 60's.  I highly doubt I was a Beatle groupie though  ;)  Even in another life, I could never get that lucky  :P

I think John knew Paul was a showman and would go down well .

Yeah, I agree about John's vocals not coming out right on that first Ed Sullivan appearance, but I always thought it was an error. Like, that his mic was malfunctioning or something. Because Paul is TOO loud on the duets on "She Loves You" and especially "I Want to Hold Your Hand," wherein John has the melody. Has anyone read more about this? It's always bugged me.

Today on my blog I write about the anniversary, and about listening to "All My Loving." http://beatles-365.blogspot.com. Sorry to shamelessly self-promote... but it IS practically a Beatles holiday! :)
