For you bass players out there, Do you use a Pick or Pluck? I have only been playing 3 months exclusivley with a pick. But I have gotten into Plucking and I love it.

Depends on my mood and the music.
Pick = rocking out, plucking = trying to play as good as I can.

That sort of rule goes for me
I don't use a pick, just the edge of my finger nail, then I can swap to plucking.

I use a thumb pick. That way I can hold it like a regular pick or switch to finger picking when I want, of course I play guitar, but the same method would work on bass. It also sounds different when you pluck strings instead of picking. What sound do you like best, mellow or sharper?

I like the thumpy old hollow-body sound, of course I am sure a lot of you do also since we all love The Beatles. :p
I just have more fun playing without a pick but I am not a big fan of the mellow sound. (at least not with my Violin Bass) It dosnt seem like its ment for it. :p

I refuse to use picks...although I do own an awesome white one with a celtic cross on it...with Cliff Burton being a huge influence to my playing, picks are a no-no.

Don't do the pick! Grow thumb or fingernails if you have to. Those fat strings need to be touched with human flesh to sound natural!

I've always thought it was a plectrum ... the way he moves ... and the thing we can listen to in Anthology I (One After 909) ... maybe I was wrong ... AGAIN!

Judging by some of those tones he gets, it's got to be the fingers. That's not to say there could be some tracks where he uses picks. I am sure I have read interviews about it but can't renember what he said......No time for research. lol
Anyone?

In the videos I've seen I've always thought it was a plectrum ... I hadn't thought too much about it being he a guitarrist, after all ...

Yeah guitarist initialy but......To get a 12th fret throb on a Riccy you gotta use them fingers!!! lol (I'm thinking Paperback Writer here.)
Tokyo Budokan gig he uses his viola but I'm sure it's a Riccy on the album.
Sounds like some Riccy pick action on EGSTHEFMAMM though.
I don't know for sure though without research.

You're right ... I've been seeing the playback the guys did for some songs in 1963 and 1964 (Big Night Out) and Paul was using his fingers ... of course I know that he used both: pick and thumb but I was refering to his favourite one ... let's ask him! Maybe he can't remember! LOL!

I think he uses a pick in almost every song, The Ricky sounds likes its being plucked with a pick though. I know he plucks on Love Me Do, at least he does on a live video I saw.
