Title: Who told Ringo the Beatles wanted him?
Post by: Pilzkopf on September 19, 2009, 02:19:54 AM
Was it a phone call, or did someone come round and knock on his door? Did he hear the news before Pete Best?

I thought I heard him say on the anthology that Brian Epstein called him up. And asked him to "really join the band."

Thanks for that. Three days notice, eh? They moved fast in those days...

On another question, it was a surprise was to find out George Martin had worked with the Goons.

Little bit of a story here ----We ( The Big Three ) were playing a couple of gigs with the Beatles as this change of drummer was going on. Pete was really p----- off with them and refused to play the remaining gigs untill Ringo was available. Our drummer ( Johnny Hutch) stood in with them for a few nights, only after being asked to do it by Brian Epstein. Hutch thought Pete had got the shaft and didn't want to play with them untill Eppy stepped in.

Very interesting information! Pete refused to play with the Beatles? Himself? But why??

Simple -- he had been given notice that Ringo was to replace him in a few days. I guess he was shocked by this decision, and was mad at them.

Hey Griff, do you feel that Pete was good enough to have kept the drum chair?

The age old question ! I don't remember any difference in their sound when Ringo joined, except maybe a bit more volume. I think if you would have taken a vote back then most musicians  would have voted for a personality conflict.

Things must have been awkward between Ringo and Pete. All the 'pool bands shared a bill at some time or another, so they must have known each other, and had a chat occasionally. But they probably never spoke again after this.

Nobody ever spoke to Pete or called him again. This is very sad. But what could they say to him?

But what could they say to him?

"Relax. We will release a lot of previously unreleased stuff in the nineties or so and you will earn a million then as well."

cool post Griff. I posted an excerpt from the new "liddypool" book (not published yet). The excerpt deals with exactly what you described above, and hutch's comments about why he wouldn't do the dirty on pete.  I posted it a few days ago in the "5th beatles" section, in the "pete best" thread. Posted with full persmission from the author (liverpudlian dave bedford), the excerpt also presents an intriguing new theory behind the PB dismissal event.
