I love Mr. Moonlight too  :)... just because it's such a different style. No masterpiece, but very special sound and voice to me.

I agree that John's vocals are really great in this song. I barely noticed anything else about it for a long time!

You tell me that it's evolution...

I picked up a CD of 'Pet Sounds' yesterday (£1 in a charity shop - result!) and I shouldn't think that the two instrumentals would get in anyone's favourite list of Beach Boys songs, but in the context of the LP they're brilliant.

No way! Two of my favourite vocal performances from John and respectively, Paul. Is this a case of you preferring the originals, Todd?

As well as the rare John/George harmony lead!

Only a Northern Song is always on a list of worst Beatle songs. And most people know how George Martin dismissed it as "just another boring George Harrison song". But I think it's got redeeming features. The chord progression and dissonances fit the lyrics. It's clear it's a p*sstake and George is blowing off steam. I'm not saying its a great song by any means. But I find I'm happier to listen to it then some lesser Lennon/McCartney songs.

I've always liked OANS. The bass line is fantastic and it written as a sarcastic commentary (probably) on Georges position as a contract writer for them. Similar to Blue jay Way, George uses discordant instruments to make his point the same way he uses droning instruments and repetitive lyrics to get across waiting all night in BJW! No, it's not a great song but it is interesting to say the least!

I think it could've been made better in the studio with a new arrangement, its too dirge like, I get bored after 8 bars. Theres possibly a great song trying to get out of there.

I've always enjoyed "Only A Northern Song"; I think it's much better than "It's All Too Much", for instance.

I really like it's All Too Much as well. In 67 when studio embellishments were over the top and Georges guitar work seemed to be fading to the back seat IATM shows what he could do. The guitar work was as psychedelic and strong as it gets with George. If released when it was recorded it could have been something of an anthem for 67.

Maybe the songwriting itself is not that bad, but the way it was recorded, with a long repetitive and monotonous ending, just bores me. However, I don't feel the same about "Hey Jude".

It certainly could have been produced better. I agree.

I think I've been listening to The Rutles too much recently.  It's getting so I can't tell the difference between Get Back and Get Up And Go...

I bought The Rutles - All You Need Is Cash DVD and CD about ten years ago, Kelley.  The review of Anthology mentioned that the video was cropped for widescreen presentation.  The Eric Idle "narration" was nothing more than an interview which was not synchronized with the video so I passed on it.

Act Naturally is a perfect Ringo cover. George is outstanding on his Gretch! It fits right in with A Hard Days Night and Help under their belts!
