No surprise since the fab 4 were heavily influenced by the MOTOWN sound.

I don't think Oh Darling sounds like a Motown song at all even though it's a great track on Abbey Road with Paul's finest vocals.

Oh Darling! is written and sung and played as a fifties throwback.
The song suffers from Paul's not quite getting the vocals right. Paul is a great singer, don't get me wrong, but here ... not quite. The fact that he had so many attempts at the vocals, over some weeks, shows that Paul himself knew it wasn't quite "there".

Yeah, definitely Fifties.
The thing was, because Paul hadn't sung anything like this probably since 1966 (live versions of I'm Down) his voice was not in the right condition to sing it. He was actually getting in the studio early everyday to blast out his vocals so he could get his voice re-accustomed to singing like this once more.

It's kind of an R&B 50's feel, so perhaps that's where the Motown vibe is being felt by some.

When a band I was in played this and I played the bass line, I always absent mindedly always nearly slipped into a song that I played in an earlier band........(the song was made famous by Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac in the late 60's) from 1955 written by Little Willie John called Need Your Love So Bad, the 2 songs have slightly different melodies but very similar structure, especially the bridge on both songs, the bass lines collide....so to speak, they have the same tempo, theyre just very similar songs although theyre sung very differently.
Maybe this explains the aforementioned 50's feel.

It's been mentioned before that it has a Fats Domino vibe going on. That's how I think of it now.
