Title: Beatles Songs in Commercials
Post by: Sondra on September 20, 2004, 03:51:18 AM
I just saw a stupid car commercial using the song Paperback Writer. Not done by the Beatles of course. Anyway, I have a question. How does this work? I mean, is it Michael Jackson giving permission to use these songs? Do the Beatles get any money for it? Just wondering. I hate hearing their songs in commercials!! Even if it's not them singing. Have any of you heard any other commercials using Beatles songs recently? I do wish they'd let VH1 or even MTV show videos of them though. I did see a Beatles video on VH1 today. It was from the Yellow Submarine. So of course they're not in it!! They have a wierd thing going with their songs and how they're shown.

No, I think it was UB40. They did a version of Paperback Writer.

Herer in Spain there is a commercial using the song "Drive my car" (it's a cars advertisement) but it's a cover version by some other artist, so I don't know... The version is quite good, actually.

I've never heard any Beatles tunes at all in commercials, actually. I'm assuming it's Jacko's doing. But has anyone noticed that there are a lot of Beach Boys songs in diaper commercials?

Yeah, I've seen that commercial here in Portugal. Actually, I don't like that version a lot. And it's definately not the Beatles' original one.

It's always satisfactory to see you idol band's songs passing on commercials. The bad side of it is you might have to suffer a bad version of the song.

But at least you know that if young people like the song, they can investigate to see who sings it and then get introudced into the Beatles. taht's good.

Kids know who the Beatles are anyway. I think they get it through osmosis or something!! I'm reading the Yellow Submarine book to my first grade students and they already know that song from somewhere! They sing it every time I pick up the book.

yeah when i first got into the beatles i was surprised by how many songs i already knew. i think i just heard them around as a kid. most people end up knowing who the beatles are just cos there so famous. but alot of people only know them for songs like she loves you or all you need is love. the other day i was listening to You Know My Name Look Up The Number an when my friend asked who it was an i said the beatles he was really surprised.

Same here. o_o Once, when I heard "I Saw Her Standing There" I instantly knew it, because i'd been hearing it all over the oldies stations for years and never knew that the Beatles did that. :o

I heard Instant Karma in a commercial with cars.
I constantly hear Getting Better but in a non-beatles version.
"It's getting better, better, better..." (for a bank or something)

I was reading about the whole Revolution Nike thing and found this:

Nike used this for commercials in 1987. Capital Records, who owns the performance rights, meaning The Beatles version of the song, was paid $250,000. Michael Jackson, who owns the publishing rights, meaning use of the words and music, also had to agree and was paid for the song.
The Nike commercials caused a huge backlash from Beatles fans who felt that Nike was disrespecting the legacy of John Lennon, who probably would have objected to its use. There were plans to use more Beatles songs in future ads, but they were abandoned when it became clear it was not good business practice. As years went by, it became more acceptable to use songs in commercials, but Beatles songs were still considered sacred, especially since the group did not control their rights. In 2002, "When I'm 64" was used in a commercial for Allstate insurance. Many Beatles fans were not pleased, but it didn't get nearly the reaction of the Nike commercials, partly because it was not a political song, but also because it was sung by Julian Lennon, which implied endorsement by his father.

So I have a few questions.

1. Why do you think there's such a backlash by Beatles fans over Beatles songs used in commercials but not for other bands? I know it's in part to them not owning the rights, but I wonder if there's something more.

2. Why are the Beatles the only band that never sold out? Why don't these other bands have the same integrity?

3. I know this must have been discussed a million times, but HOW did they lose the rights to their music?? And has this happened to other bands like the Stones or Who?

Yes, dumb questions, but I'm bored.

Cool information..but I dont know any answers

I dont get why they just play the original song without fans getting so offended, or p*ssed, or whatever the word is.....I'd rather hear a Beatles song(original) then some Good charlotte or Blink 182 song

I've heard the Julian Lennon version of "When I'm Sixty-Four" -- i've seen that commercial, anyway. Doesn't sound all that different from the original.

1. Cos Beatles inspire a fanatiscm (?) in their fans that other bans just don't . Mind, I've not heard many Elvis songs in commercials either.

2. I know that Dave Clarke has been offered zillions for Glad All Over by the Gladwrap people, and he's refused. There must be lots of other cases.

3. Can't remember the exact details, but it was some dodgy backroom deal involving Lew Grade. Paul, however, owns all of Buddy Holly's songs, so its a funny old world

Thanks for the input! I didn't know that about Dave Clarke. I'm sure there are others I can't think of. Pink Floyd comes to mind. Has anyone ever heard a Floyd song in a commercial? Or movie for that matter. I can't think of one. They seem the type not to care to make money in such a way. But I could be wrong.

pink floyd is an odd bunch, haha their songs aren't really as tv commercial-friendly as a song like 'getting better' is, ya know?

i don't know if this has been posted already, but did anyone see the GM commercials where the melody for 'the long and winding road' is playing in the background on piano? i saw it on sunday night when the academy awards were on, i'm pretty sure it was that song. unless it was a total ripoff and it wasn't supposed to be a beatles song

Yeah, but they have a few commercial friendly tunes. Especially Money! But I guess Shine on you crazy diamond or wouldn't sell many cars! Wish You Were Here would be a good one for greeting cards!

The Gold Its in The was featured in a car commercial.  Cant remember for who though.  Thats a very commercial Floyd Song, big guitars, cool lyrics.

I think Beatles fans flip out over the songs in commercials cos they dont play all of them, just clips.  When I hear a song start, i want to hear the song, not some bullsh*t announcer.  TheCingular ad featuring The Weight is the one that currently has me ready to blow.

Obscured By The Clouds.  Its great rock track, very unusual for them.  Short, heavy, excellent

I want to get that one. That's the one where they argue about sibilance with the director.Whatever sibilance is.  Is it the one with the Nile Song too? I love that song. Sounds more like Black Sabbath or Deep Purple!

I dont think so, Obscured By the Clouds has some great songs though.   Wots....Uh the Deal (amazing), Childhood's End, Free Four, the title track.  Dont think Nile is on it though

Yeah, they never play it on the radio and I feel like it would fit in perfectly with a lot of the newer stuff. Dave's vocals are amazing.

some work better than others, that use of Instant Karma works well I think for the message they were going for

Target milked the hello goodbye, some were better than others.

Is it negotiated rates or is it a standard rate for using someone's song?  original or redone, same price?

Mine, too Euan. For the last few years I’ve been lamenting the lack of Christmas music in the holiday commercials here. That doesn’t bother me at all with this.
