John: Hey, man. What's that noise?

Paul: Ruff!

John: What do ya say?

Paul: I say, ruff!

John: Do you know any more?

Paul: Rowooooorrrrrowf! Ahhh-hahahahahaa!!

John: You've got it! That's great! You hit it! That's it, man! Woop! That's it! You got it! Ha ha ha!

Paul: Woo!

John: Don't look at me, man. I only have grandchildren.

Paul: Ha ha hoo ha ha hoo etc.

John: Okay. Quiet, boy! Quiet!

Paul: Okay.

John: Heyyyy...

Both: ...bulldog!

Paul's barking like a dog, and John's quieting him down (as you would a pet), tossing a Lennonish joke in the middle. That's about all the "meaning" there. :) The real meaning is that even in 1968, they could still goof around hysterically with each other and be cheeky enough to keep their improvisations in the finished version.

Last song recorded before leaving for India ... the end of the beginning, just before the beginning of the end.

(Not "The End" of forum fame, or "The End" of Abbey Road fame, but rather the end of the ... oh, never mind!)

No problem. :) The reason it's so hard to make out exactly who's saying what is, of course, the heavy distortion on the vocals. It sure works for the song, though!

On a completely incidental note, the worst cover version of any Beatles song I've ever heard was done by a high school brass band. They covered "Hey, Bulldog," except changed the chorus line "You can talk to me" to "Albuquerque" (where I live). Yeah, it was as bad as you're imagining. Worse, actually.

I didn't think of the traumatic effect that recollection would have on the DM brethren (and sisteren). I won't do it again. (Offering a cold washcloth)

I think in the beginning it's john by himself and after the scream that John does Paul jumps in. but Paul doesn't bark John does

It was Paul that started off the barking.

paul barks first which leads to john asking him what ya say .

Did anybody else hear the metronome in the beginning of the song? You have to listen pretty hard.  :D

I've never noticed that. Might be enough inspiration to get me to open up the Remasters box set thats been laying around for ages.

I love this song. The end is awesome. John and Paul in their own little world. You just KNOW Ringo and George had a special look they gave each other when they did stuff like that. "Oh god, there they go again..." I always notice it whenever I'm listening to bootleg or anthology studio chat they're always going off on something. And in the promo videos John and Paul always seem to try to make each other laugh while George and Ringo generally look bored out of their minds.

I absolutely adore this song, one of my favourites.
It's catchy, but not in an irritating way? I like the lyrics a lot, all the phrases that pop up.
I'm a sucker for Beatles songs involving piano so that's also a big reason why I love it.

This song is a perfect example of the beatle's effortless brilliance. Created virtually on the spot with throw away lyrics, but what a bouncy tune! The vibe the four have is wonderful, especially in the instrumental break.
I love in the vid watching Paul read the lyrics off a sheet of paper, still unsure what he's singing at times.  My kids love this!

i played this to a friend who is a Chili Pepper fan and suggested they should cover it - it has that funky kick in it. He agreed!

Is in my top 10 alltime Beatle songs.
