I'm pretty positive its the girl going that high
Yeah, it's a girl. I think her name's Merry Clayton or something, but I always thought it would've been like, Marianne Faithfull or somebody. Dunno. But that's definately not Mick.
The last CD I bought was The Who Sings My Generation. At the same time I got the Hendrix Experience's Are You Experienced on vinyl. :)
-
I've spend well over 300 euros on Beach Boys records at a record fair yesterday. :)
-
I've spend well over 300 euros on Beach Boys records at a record fair yesterday. :)
probably got you a fair share of records
-
So far for Rolling Stones albums I have Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Mainstreet, Black & Blue, A Bigger Bang and Goats Head Soup, any suggestions as to what to get next?
-
I like Steel Wheels (1989) ... and Voodoo Lounge (1994) was very Stoney ... compared with the last two.
I'm afraid you've still got too many good options: Some Girls (1978 ), ... ??)
Don't worry, because the weakest ones are out (Black and Blue and Goat's Head Soup)
-
I forgot I had Some Girls, I really liked Goats Head Soup and i thought Black and Blue had quite a few good moments. I'm thinking of getting some of their earlier 60's albums but I'm not sure which ones.
-

I like them too (Black and Blue was my first album from them) ...
I'm not sure which one could be the best option ... but
Out of Our Heads (lots of covers)
Aftermath (first one with only own material -his A Hard Day's Night) and
Between The Buttons (they were moving more into arty territory and away from their R&B roots)
are the best choices, I guess, ... specially Afterma_tt2
-
how is Their Satanic Majasties Request and Its Only Rock And Roll, I think you've made a sale for Aftermath raxo ;D
-
Exile On Main Street
Chaos and Creation In The Backyard
Billy Joel Greatest Hits
Jesfferson Airplane
-
how is Their Satanic Majasties Request and Its Only Rock And Roll, I think you've made a sale for Aftermath raxo ;D
Yes, I have ;D But I thougt you was "...thinking of getting some of their earlier 60's albums but I'm not sure which ones"... well, anyway:
I'd describe Their Satanic Majasties Request as a psychedelic album. Its recording was long and broken up by court and jail as you might know (possession of marijuana). It sounds too pretentious and a (very) bad copy of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It includes the only Wyman's song on an official Rolling Stones album, a song that concludes with Wyman snoring (imagine what was on their minds when they made this album ::) ). Another curiosity is that John and Paul sang backing vocals on 2 tracks (none of them are the single We Love You).
And Its Only Rock And Roll is stronger than Goats Head Soup, really Stoney. It combines rock, soul and even reggae. Better choice than Their Satanic Majasties Request. My favourites are Till The Next Goodbye, Time Waits For No One and Fingerprint File (featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano in the three ones) tho none of them are in the best Stone style, they have their classic dirty sound and moves around a basic line: but that's what I like of them! (if you know what I mean) ;D
My choices: Its Only Rock And Roll and Afterma_tt2
-
Well I picked up Afterma_tt2 today ;D I'm really enjoying this album, especially Out Of Time, Under My Thumb, Mother's Little Helper and Lady Jane. You alway suggest great albums raxo ;D

Didn't want to mention the money thing because of an argument junniorsfarm and Indica had in October (Ssarah was there too).

Have you got enough time to listen to so much music? I mean: do you have as much time as me ... for music? We could be the luckiest here! (not talking about money) LOL!
-
Yeah, I have my own office at work which has a CD player, so I can listen to music of my own choice pretty much every minute that I'm awake.
-
I'm sure that more than one envies you :)

raxo I need some more help with The Rolling Stones. I eventually want to get all of their albums but I was browsing through their catalog and realized to some of their earlier albums they have three different versions of the albums. This is really confusing. I have The Singles Collection: London Years, which is 3 discs of their singles so would the U.K. versions and this get me almost all of the songs?

I understand that your talking about "almost all of the songs" of their early years ... I'll check it
-
Well as many as possible without having to buy two of each album. They dont have an extra album with all the extra songs on it do they?
-
I'm not sure ... I know that Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) (1966) includes most of the band's hit singles but I'd have to check the tracklist
-
I checked the two Big Hits albums. Looks like if I get those I'll have close to everything. Thanks for the advice raxo, and I don't know if you noticed but I uploaded the Making Of All Things Must Pass Disc 1 up on the bootlegs forum for you ;D
-
^I've noticed .. and it works at last! Thank you very much, ma_tt2. I'm telling Bobber.

The last CD I bought was Queen's Greatest Hits for my mom's boyfriend's Xmas present.

Chaos and Creation - Macca
Tommy (Deluxe version) - The Who
Heh..."Tommy" is the best thing I've heard from the Who.
Chaos and Creation is a fine album but I prefer "Flaming Pie". And I don't even have *that* album! But I listened to it a couple of times.

I kinda pinched this idea from PC from his Fith Beatles Forum!! LOL!
But... what was the last CD or record (or possibly download) you purchased and would you recommend to the rest of us and why?
The last CD I purchased was Dressy Bessy's self titled (or eponymous even!!) album - I don't think there's a duff track on it! Check out The Things That You Say That You Do - I played that over and over for an hour! Awesome!
So... what about you - what was the last piece of music you bought? Over to you...

Johan is a Dutch band which is influenced by a well-known band from Liverpool. Definately worth a listen. And pimping these guys cause they're from the same town as me.

Belle & Sebastian- fox in the snow
The apples in sterio-i can't believe
Tim Buckley-the earth has broken
Tim buckley-devil eyes..

-
I went to the pawn shop and bought the following:

I last bouht three vinyl LPs at the same time:
Jefferson Airplane- Surrealistic Pillow (already have it on CD, but oh well)
Fleetwood Mac- Tusk
Simon and Garfunkel- Bridge Over Troubled Waters
The mono version on vinyl of Surrealistic Pillow is supposed to be superior to the Stereo--much less echo. Still, what a great album. "Coming Back to Me" "Today" wow! Great songs for a female voice.
-
I have the stereo version. But yeah, man, do I love blasting it from my record player and just singing along!
-
Bob Dylan- Hard Rain
Chicago Soundtrack
-
Guadalcanal Diary
-
Paul Simons "Negotiations and love songs 1971-1986" Just enough of Simon to quell the urge but not too much of a box set to make you sick.
-
Bob Dylan- Hard Rain
Chicago Soundtrack
Hard Rain is way underrated--"Idiot Wind" is worth the price alone.
I've also had the privilege to be in the Enactron Truck that was used for the mobile recording. Too bad it was twenty years after they were recording Bob with it.
-
^But still.....a nice honour. ;o)
-
Sammy Hagar & The Wabos - Livin' It Up

Television - Marquee Moon

Now that's cool!
It's pretty cool. All this vintage equipment in mahogany cabinets (at least I think they are). It allowed "live" performers to overdub flaws immediately after a show when they were still "in voice."
Amazing how many records were recorded with this. I just bought an album of David Bromberg and noticed that they had used the truck.
Brian Ahern (who produced Emmylou) owns it and Donivan Cowart was the main engineer. They were pioneers for their day for recording in houses (real places) instead of studios. Now everybody's doing it thanks to digital technology.

Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around CD
The Bouncing Souls - The Gold Record CD
Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue LP

I bought it a few months back but keep forgetting to mention it: JJ Cales To Tulsa and Back (2004). To my mind it's just as good, if not better, than the Dylan albums from the same period.

(http://images.buymusichere.net/images/muze/810/814753.jpg) (http://www.matadorrecords.com/mission_of_burma/music.html)
I didn't know they were still a band! I thought they quit 20 years ago. I was blown away when I realized they had a new album and had even recorded one in 2004. I think this made my year.

I know it puts money in the wrong hands, but Cosmo's Factory and Green River are about two of the most perfect rock and/or roll albums out there.

Russian Futurists - Me, Myself And Rye
Greg Graffin - Cold As Clay
-
I know it puts money in the wrong hands, but Cosmo's Factory and Green River are about two of the most perfect rock and/or roll albums out there.
Totally totally agree. Cosmos Factory is a lost classic. Completely (and bravely) bucking the trend for concept type albums, every song is strong. Four top ten hit singles and it topped both the rock and soul (unheard of for a white rock band) charts. Magnificent.
-
yeah fantasy records did j c wrong....cosmos factory is great...i like the roy orbison cover mostly...ooby dooby...i have heard a clapton version too....roys is also good..
-
Emotional Rescue by the Stones, I was surprised how good this was after reading the reviews.

i didn't bought it... but i got it today:
bob dylan - infidels, oh mercy & time out of mind
not heard yet.
-
I guess I'm not used enough to it ... Time Out Of Mind is a masterpiece tho ... I love it ... I think I'm going to enjoy Modern Times too but I've listen to it just a couple of times and the longest tracks sounded like a mess at the end ... at first listening at least ... I like Bob but I liked more Time Out Of Mind than Love And Thief ...
-
Fuuny. I love the new album.
Btw koma, Infidels and Time Out Of Mind are REAL good.
-
It's getting better now ...
-
I hear ya. Some of the songs don't do anything for me. But the others are good.

The Rain cover is brave, but bad. (slow with horns). This album came out in 66, charted at 11, and was by one of Britains top female artists. But the gulf between it and Revolver, both in vision and production, is vaste.

And their bass player is now Fatboy Slim.
-
Yeah Norman cook..funny eh?! :P
-
It's pretty interesting to see what the members of the Housemartins did after their band broke up... Two members formed a new band and made the UK's best-selling album of the 90s... One member became one of the world's most succesful techno DJs... One member now writes children's books... And one former member was was send to jail for attacking someone with an axe.
If you'd write a story about a fictional band and you'd make this up, people would laugh at you for being so unrealistic.
-
Haha your right..great origional band though
-
My "good con" mono vinyl Revolver has just arrived from ebay (12 quid). I haven't heard Revolver for ten years, and never in mono.
It's home for dinner, take the phone off the hook, roll a nice little number, a bit of Rubber Soul for warmup and perspective, then bliss.
-
NICE to see you're listening to it again.
As for me, I ordered a Sandi Thom CD (yes! I know! okay!) two weeks ago and it hasn't arrived yet.

Are those John martyn ones good BM? i like bell x1 they're good, 'lamposts' is a good track
They are both excellent. I still have my old vinyl Live At Leeds, signed by the man himself. The extra stuff on the first CD is badly recorded however all the stuff from the original album is very nicely remastered.
In Session is a compilation of JM's BBC radio sessions. Basically from two John Peel, and one (Whispering) Bob Harris. It's staggeringly good.
Bell X-1 are fairly new to me. The barman in my local plays them. Good album. Damien Rice's old band.

I just had to go for the hundreths post!!!

ah! i want orphans so bad! it costs friggin loads though, like £33..what's it like? mule variations is great but that was from like 1999.

I finally found "Summer in Paradise" by the Beach Boys for a reasonable price. It's the only one of their 27 studio albums that I didn't have yet. It sold so poorly that they didn't even bother to repress it so it's been out of print ever since it came out in 1992. Which is understandable cause it's a really bad album. But hey... Now I finally have all their albums. :) :) :) :) :)

I wonder what's going through our heads sometimes when we're prepared to pay good money for crap!! :-/

yeah, i've done it a lot of times (eg, john and yoko, two virgins).
Strange, i got john and yoko's 3 experimental albums in 3 different countries! :D

It doesn't bother me... I collect Beach Boys records like other people collect stamps or coins. It's not just about the music.
-
And well, if you have 26 of all 27 albums that your favorite band ever made... You want that 27th album as well... Even if you know it's crap.

And well, if you have 26 of all 27 albums that your favorite band ever made... You want that 27th album as well... Even if you know it's crap.
This is mad, but entirely true!!
Friend of mine who's also a big Beatles fan just bought the Love double digipack with the DVD-A, and surround sound. He doesn't have DVD Audio or Surround Sound. He just wanted the digipack.
-
I don't think collecting is mad. It's fun. It's a hobby. A few weeks ago I paid 40 euros for a rare Spanish Beach Boys EP with 4 songs on it that I already had. For most people that probably doesn't make sense, but I seriously can't think of anything I'd rather spend those 40 euros on.

It's very very satisfying

I just got Love, I found it intresting but only a few tracks stand out in my mind. I thought Hey Jude was brilliant, Strawberry Fields Forever was well put together and the guitar seperation on Revolution is excellent. Other than those I found the album to be quite dull.
-
I spent a total of four dollars for Jeff Beck's Truth and Beck-Ola (repackaged together) and Pete Townshend's Empty Glass.
Really quite cheap for three albums, I can't complain. :]
-
Well, I just got a copy of Aqua's Aquarium CD for two dollars. Go ahead, laugh at me. I deserve it.

"Love" and the new album of an Argentinian singer called Andres Calamaro. There's something interesting about the cover of the album, it's called "El palacio de las flores" and the photo of the cover was taken by Robert Freeman, who we all know, is the responsible for the covers of "Help" and "Rubber Soul".
You can see the cover at http://www.calamaro.com/disco/s_elpalacio.asp
Cheers!!!

The Vaselines - The Way Of The Vaselines CD

I also bought The Best Of Bruce And Terry (who are, as you probably know, Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher) at the same time as well!! http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000009QRW/203-0286053-4486307

Thanks!
I got Bruce Johnston's first solo album a while ago. Pretty nice. I'm sure he could've been succesful without the Beach Boys as well.
The Vaselines, they're a little bit too amateurish and sloppy for my taste, but they sure wrote some pretty good songs.
-
James Brown live, Cheap Trick - Greatest Hits, NewYork Dolls. ;D Diverse, if anything.
-
Doe Maar - Echt Alles 3CD: Even though this title means "Really Everything" it doesn't include anything from their 3 live albums, from their dub remix album, from their reunion album and several songs they recorded for benefit albums are missing. But 55 songs by one of the best Dutch bands ever for 25 euros is still a good deal.
Audioslave - In Cuba DVD: Never really got into this band (they broke up yesterday, by the way), even though I love Rage Against The Machine and like Soundgarden. I wanted it anyway because there are a few Soundgarden and RATM songs on it, and because it's great to see all these places I visited last summer in the bonus documentary.

The Ataris - Welcome The Night CD (so far I think it sucks)
Henry Rollins - Talk Is Cheap Vol. 3 2CD (spoken word - this is seriously the funniest guy ever)
Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin': The Best Of CD (pretty good)
Ben Folds - Supersunnyspeedgraphic CD (excellent... and his cover of "b****es Ain't sh*t" could very well be the funniest thing ever put on CD)
Soundgarden - Superunknown CD (I wanted this CD sooooo bad 12 years ago, but couldn't afford it... then I lost interest... now I finally got it)
Brian Wilson - In My Room bootleg CD (contains studio outtakes from the late 70s and rare live tracks - not very good but still pretty damn cool to own)
Green Day - Unplugged bootleg CD (not as good as I hoped cause they didn't change the arrangements of the songs - so it's punk drums and a very thin guitar sound which doesn't really sound that cool... and it contains two almost identical live shows)
Nickel Creek - S/t CD (some good songs, overall too country for my taste though)
The Stranglers - 5 Live 01 2CD (nice to hear these songs live, even though it isn't with the original singer)
The Zombies - Live At The Bloomsbury Theatre 2CD (all the big Zombies hits plus some pretty cool solo hits and covers)

I'm actually cutting down on my CD budget... No kidding. Usually it's about 30 CDs a month, last month it was 15... :)
And I know where to get the cheap CDs... I paid about 90 euros for the 10 CDs I listed.

I just ordered three CDs off the internet, but they came at different times
Nellie McKay- Pretty Little Head (Fabulous! Not as weirdly good as her first album, but more personal and still plenty political)
Hunchback of Notre Dame Soundtrack (AMAZING!!!!!!! I love the Latin and Tony Jay (R.I.P) is just an amazing singer)
My Avril Lavigne CD hasn't come yet, unfortunately. :(

Have you heard her new one 'Drastic Fantastic'?! It's brialliant, very different from the
Telescope but a good change. Not a lot of people i've heard like this different move, but
i do!! :)

I guess 'Love', it has been so long.

Well, two recent records I bought today. Usher's Confessions and Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor. I know it's quite different from the majority of the albums I have, but I listening different stuff, not just Soul and Soft Rock! :)

That's what i like to hear, Branching into other areas! ;)
What's the Madonna album like?
Hehe. It's her 2005 album, Confessions on a Dance Floor. It's a really good piece of non-stop dance music, I mean there's no ballads in here, but it's all good stuff. 'Hung Up' became her biggest hit single, so surely you heard it somewhere. The other singles are really good, there's no one bad song. It's impressive how well recorded the album is. I guess she's using the best techonology in the business. I've never heard an album sounding like this one.
But what is really blowing me up now is Joni Mitchell's new album 'Shine'. You have to hear it Andy, it's fantastic. She's old and her voice doesn't sound like in her 1971's 'Blue', but I think she's still amazing. Just listen to the opening track, the instrumental 'One Week Last Summer'. It's beautiful. :)
I'm just discovering Joni, and I think she's great. 'Blue' is one of my Top 10 favourite albums of all time. 8)

'A Case Of You' still gives me chills.

I got the Travelling Wilbury's box set for my brother for Christmas, so then I had to get it for myself. One of the most enjoyable records I've ever heard.
-
Bought the actual physical release of 'In Rainbows' yesterday.
-
I bought two CDs at the "Boxing Week" sales: The Dreamgirls soundtrack and Imagine by Eva Cassidy. I really enjoyed the Dreamgirls CD, but that's because I love showtunes. The Eva Cassidy CD I would recommend to everyone.

I guess this was my most recent purchase, as well. Man, I love this set! Disc 1 sees the most play, but Disc 2 has some gems as well: Inside Out, Cool Dry Place and Wilbury Twist are my favorites.

Radiohead- Ok computer (apparently....a classic album which I never got).
Radiohead - In rainbows (I like it)
The last CD I actually got was the jimi hendrix experience live at montery (new release) around the christmas excitement period, and is worth the price alone for Brian Jones' pure adulation of the band at the beginning! Such a tight performance..

Radiohead - In rainbows (I like it)
You could have got that for free.

Yay! Innervisions is the greatest album ever. I hope you enjoy it, Andy!
The last album I bought is A Time 2 Love also by Stevie. His latest album, from 2005, featuring 15 songs, 77 minutes of music. Beautiful ballads, concious lyrics, great instrumentation. Also great guest stars: Paul McCartney & Prince. Two of my favourites ever. What an album! Highly recommended.

I'd get 'Fulfillingness' First Finale' next. It's the album that follows Innervisions, and better, I think. Then 'Talking Book', 'Music Of My Mind', and 'Songs in the Key of Life'. Personally I wouldn't bother with anything after that, though 'Hotter Than July' has it's moments.

I've been listening to Jackon Browne's "The Pretender" which I picked up in a pawn shop. It's really starting to grow on me. He's really a cut above the LA poser-songwriters and has David Lindley, a key asset.

Great song that Jane 8) i like Cyndi Lauper's voice .
I bought Michael Jackson's 25th annivarsary edition of "Thriller" yesterday , i most say this remasterd version doe's sound brilliant .
Don't like the modern takes he did with will . i .am and Fergie they add nothing to the originals , nice to have the videos as well .
Only five pounds from the supermarket a real bargain , this album does take me back real happy days :)

One of my top 10 albums of all time. Great choice.
-
After I'd read a Beach Boys and a Doors biography that both claimed that 'Forever Changes' was probably a better album than anything that these respective bands had released I had very high hopes... But somehow I just can't get into it. I like the song 'Alone Again Or', but I don't really care for the rest.
-
You Are Here - Thenewno2
Judy, what`s your opinion?
-
^ I think it's a very well put together album. Nothing less than what I was expecting, nothing too more either.

Thanks! And tell me if it is on sale in Canada? Or did you get it some other way?
And Is Julian and Sean available in shops?
-
It is available in Canada, I did have to special order it though. There is Julian and Sean stuff available too, but again it looks like you'd probably have to special order it too. I remember seeing a Sean Lennon CD in another shop, but that was when it was first released.

Teen Idols- Full Leather Jacket
Cool! About ten years ago they had a hole in their scedule during a European tour and a friend of mine managed to get them to play in the youth centre of the small town that we live in. I think about 10 people showed up, but they played like it was a full house.
-
I just bought the album on a whim because I thought the cover art and song titles were cool, but I ended up really liking it.
-
Robert Johnson- King of the Delta Blues Singers
Excellent choice!
-
"Cilla Black The Definitive Collection" if you want to sample George Martin's other 60's productions this is a great CD it's a tripple disc set 2CD's and a DVD selection from her 60's shows .
It's got all her Beatles songs on it plus her version of Paul's Junk which is why i bought it .
It only cost £ 7.00 which is a bargain for a 3 disc set , the remastering is brilliant throughout 8)
-
anyone out there heard of American hard rock band Smile Empty soul! Just discovered them via a Net buddy in Denmark. They just released their 4th album. I got their 3rd one from 2006 delivered today from e-bay. I'm not usually into this music but the singer has a cool voice and they have a very well produced sound.

More Cilla Black ;D
Cilla - The Best of 1963 - 1978 (Tripple CD)
Cilla Black - The Abbey Road Decade 1963 - 1973 - Produced By George Martin (Tripple CD)
I now have just about everything George Martin produced for her , she's remarkably easy listening it's surprising how many of these songs i know , all those Saturday night shows she did on UK TV in the 60's and 70's must have lodged these songs in my memory .
Not as good a vocalist as Dusty Springfield , but still a very good singer and it's great to hear what George was producing at the same time as The Beatles ;)
-
I'm a big David Bowie fan think his 1969 to 1980 period rivals The Beatles in the 60's ?
A brilliant decade of music from him :)
-
^^ Speaking of Bowie, I just bought the Changes album! I think they are a lot different, so I can't compare them. And it was a brillian decade from him!

Geez, sorry Joost. Just saw this question and although its been 3 years ago, yes I like it. Some of it has that over the top fluff, but other stuff is genius in my opinion. 'The Know It All', 'It Won't Always Be The Same', and 'To Claudia On Thursday' are pure gold for me.

I really like their version of "Somebody to Love" so I bought this. It's good! I was surprised to find a Nat King Cole song that my mom liked, "Nature Boy" but then I did some reading and found out it was about Gypsy Boots, who was probably the first hippie. "Father Bruce", inspired by Lenny Bruce and Bob Dylan's "Outlaw Blues" are good too.

Do you like that album Ovi? I prefer any album by the Who from 1965 to 1978, but in my opinion that album is better than Face Dances. I think it was a pretty solid debut for Pete as a solo artist.

I actually got that one just yesterday! I did give it a listen and liked a few things, but it served more as background music, as I was working on an essay at the same time. It's nice to hear that you like it more than 'Face Dances', though I don't know just how much of a compliment is that, since FD is probably the most un-Who Who album ever released...
But I'll give it a few more listens in the near future and come back with more opinions.

I actually like Face Dances though it's not a favorite, but you're right, the sound is not very Who. I still think that It's Hard is much worse. But don't expect to find plenty of Who-like music in Empty Glass, you'll find that just at moments ("Rough Boys"; title track; "Gonna Get Ya").

'It's Hard' is by no means a good album (the fact that Pete called it "great" in his book really came as a shock), but at least it's got 'Eminence Front', which I really like. It's a got a very decadent, distant and paranoid atmosphere that probably resembled Townshend's state at the time and I really dig that.
-
I wish the new Who vinyl box set had Live at Leeds, Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy and Odds and Sods instead of Face Dances, It's Hard and Endless wire. But then it wouldn't be called The Studio Albums. My name would be The Good Ones.

The Byrds-First 5 albums original mono mixes (Sundazed)
Have you listened to Gene Clark's first solo album? If you haven't you should. I think you'll enjoy it if you like the early Byrds' albums. The solo debut of the original main songwriter of the Byrds is called Gene Clark With The Gosdin Brothers, released in early 1967. All songs written and sung by Gene Clark, with a very byrdish sound: jangly guitars, deep harmony vocals and even byrds Chris Hillman and Mike Clarke on bass and drums, respectively. Glorious mid-60's rock.

I heard it years ago. Sundazed has it. It will probably be my next purchase from them.
-
Got Lorde's 'Pure Heroine' album because I really enjoy her two singles, but it's very underwhelming. I'm starting to wonder more and more if current pop stars actually give a sh*t about the albums they release as a whole, or do they concentrate just on the singles? (not that there's anything wrong with singles as your main artistic priority, it's just that I feel a bit foolish buying the album and finding that nothing even comes even close to the singles, quality-wise.)
-
Maybe there's not much profit to make in selling cd's, online or offline. So why bother to try to make a masterpiece?
-
The recognition. Its like the movie 'Field Of Dreams',,,,build it and they will come.
-
There's a few artists nowadays where I'll buy a whole album as these acts do seem to want to craft coherent quality material. But I think Ovi's observation is right. Generally artists today know that most of the sales will be downloads of two or three songs. So all the effort goes into having a few killer tracks. The remaining album material is filler for concerts.
-
Not helped by the fad of giving each song marks out of 5 in an album review.
Think how much great Beatles stuff would not have been 'recommended to download'.
I suspect most of the White Album for starters.

Think how much great Beatles stuff would not have been 'recommended to download'.
I suspect most of the White Album for starters.
Exactly. I admit to doing using that to buy a couple of songs. If there's a group of artists I want to check out at once. Then maybe move into the album.
The ease of doing playlists has swung the pendulum back to singles.
-
I finally got a couple of CDs I've been wanting; Band on the Run and Neil Young's Live at Massey Hall. I had the Band on the Run LP when it first came out and I wondered if I'd still love it as much now as I did then. I do.
-
Having got rid of hundreds of CDs in recent weeks, I've started to notice gaps in the old collection that need to be addressed and, inspired by a recent half-hour piece on the album by Johnnie Walker, I got 'Lady Soul' (1968) by Aretha Franklin last night.
Two things:
1. It cost me £2.99 in HMV, considerably less than it would have done 25 years ago! and,
2. It clocks in at under 30 minutes which, for me, adds to the experience rather than working against it.

How is the album in comparison with its predecessor, 'Never Loved A Man' ?
-
Maybe there's not much profit to make in selling cd's, online or offline. So why bother to try to make a masterpiece?
Just for an artistic reason, to put outside what you have inside. The art itself should be the main objective. But if the only objective is to make money, then there's no reason to bother, as well as there's no artist.

Well put.
-
'Never Loved A Man' was the one Aretha album I actually had, but I doubt if I've played it for at least 10 years.
That said, clocking in at 32 minutes and including the title track, 'Respect' and 'Do Right Woman, Do Right Man', it doesn't exactly sound a dud!
I'll dust it down and also purchase 'Aretha Arrives' (67), 'Aretha Now' (68) and 'Soul '69' (erm.....69) and that should see me through on the Aretha front.

A fabulous record and, with 'White Light/White Heat', the go-to VU/Lou Reed CD for me (actually now I think of it, I haven't got a Lou Reed CD to go to!).
The more controversial songs on the Nico LP ('Waiting For The Man', 'Herion', 'Venus In Furs') have run their course, I just can't listen to them any more. Not very keen on Loaded either.

Not exactly a CD, and I'm not sure if you can't get this around the world, but I've been listening to Gilles Peterson's 4-part Guide to Brazilian Music on BBC Radio 2.
Now I know absolutely zilch about Brazilian music and I'm trying to get a handle on the 60s in particular. Some of the stuff he's played (a '68 LP by Pedro Santos, Tamba Trio, Quarteta em cy.....?!?!?) has been brilliant.

That version of 'Let's Spend The Night Together' is really rather good isn't it!
I don't particularly want to start up an argument, honest, but Bowie's version (1973, hmmm) is the worst cover version, Stones or otherwise, I have ever heard (apart from 'American Pie' by Madonna, obviously), but this is pretty groovy.
'Out of Time' seems to work (slightly) less well.

Yes, they are indeed rather good. My favorite Beatles cover, and it happens to be a bossa nova arrangement, is The Fool On The Hill by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66...

My cup runneth over Hello Goodbye!
In the spirit of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of 'A Hard Day's Night' I've been playing the Stones' 'Five By Five' EP from that same summer.
One thing struck me, and it obviously applies to The Beatles as well, and that is just HOW MUCH stuff those lads put out in the 60s.
Starting from the previous summer ('63), '5 by 5' was their second stand-alone EP, their 4th stand-alone 45 (including 3 stand-alone b-sides) had just come out, and they'd recorded a fabulous debut LP, their 2nd LP due to come out at the start of '65. And that's quite apart from BBC sessions, TV appearances, touring etc.
In 2014, that work-rate of 18 months would be stretched out to fill a decade.....and it wouldn't touch what The Stones (or The Beatles) put out.

I had to buy 'Paradise Theater' from Styx AGAIN because I couldn't find it and my brother wanted to borrow it. I don't know what happens to them sometimes.

I saw Midlake at a festival last week and was impressed enough to order their last two albums.

Seriously Kelley, i'm not sure about the picture disc. I only had the CD.

ha2ha
Seriously Kelley, i'm not sure about the picture disc. I only had the CD.
I forgot this is a thread about CDs! I had the album and the 8 track. I listened to the tape more, in my '72 Cutlass (which I got in 1980 when I was a senior in high school). If I listened to the album now I would probably remember the exact moments when the program changed on the 8 track since I tended to leave the same tape in the deck for weeks on end. LOL
-
I finally got around to buying the Doris Troy CD (1963) in the huge Japanese Atlantic Soul/Jazz campaign.
Those 60s LPs are perfect - great sleeves, 12 songs, over in 30 minutes.....virtually the template for great pop music, and one which The Beatles and Stones followed to the letter on their early releases.
I'm in London tomorrow so I'm going to pick up another couple, possibly the Booker T. '66 record and Archie Bell & The Drells from '68. Or maybe The Mar-Kays? Or Carla Thomas? Too much choice!
All just £5 each.
-
The price of music is getting ridiculous.....
The Doors - 'Strange Days' - the edition that 'The Sunday Times' put out about 6/7 years ago - 25p.
You can't get a packet of crisps for 25p!
-
Started on a new enterprise - buying music (CDs - physical product as opposed to non-physical product) for as little outlay as possible.
So far.....
1. The Doors - 'Strange Days' - (mint) 25p.
2. The Beach Boys - 'Pet Sounds' mono & stereo versions on one CD - (mint) 50p.
-
Started on a new enterprise - buying music (CDs - physical product as opposed to non-physical product) for as little outlay as possible.
Mmm. I would have to check the prices over here. There is hardly a cd-stop left.
-
My source = charity shops on the high street (Oxfam, Scope, British Heart Foundation etc.).
I'll focus on CDs up to £2 and really only blues and pop music from the mid-50s to about 1972 although, for example, U2's whole back catalogue could be purchased in this way for about £15.
Let's see what a Top 10 looks (and costs) like.
-
Erm.....'Beatles For Sale'.....bought on the equivalent Friday to the one in 1964.
The 2009 edition of the CD was a whopping £12.99, but the going rate for the 1980s issues is anything from £4 to £7 in Soho. I got my 'Beatles For Sale' (absolute mint copy) for £5 in Berwick Street.
One observation - I actually only saw one copy of 'Beatles For Sale', but I must have seen 10 copies of 'A Hard Day's Night'.
Another observation - Why on earth did Apple go so early on the reissues when there was an actually anniversary (the 50th!) just around the corner?
Surely now is the time for a new, sparkling version of 'Beatles For Sale' (with mono AND stereo on one CD) to be in the shops for Christmas. Doh!
-
Seriously might break my aversion to box sets.
Not with the (alas) over-priced 'Basement Tapes', The Beatles' mono box or even with the rather reasonably priced 'The Velvet Underground' but with.....THE RUBBLE COLLECTION VOLS. 1-20 (320 tracks!) that appears to be around the £50 or $88 mark.
If you don't know, Rubble was a set of 60s pysch comps put out in the (truly dire) 1980s to keep us from all falling asleep.
If a brilliant British 45 was put out between '66 and '69 that sold diddly squat but had the ambition to be as good (and often be better than) 'Penny Lane', rest assured it was on a Rubble compilation.
-
1. The Doors - 'Strange Days' (25p)
2. The Beach Boys - 'Pet Sounds' mono & stereo (50p) and now.....
3. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - '24 Greatest Hits - Compact Command Performances' for £1.99 (mint).
This was a very early CD release in 1986 (one of the first on Motown I believe) and has the appalling graphic design of the 1980s to prove it.
Indeed in 1986, no doubt retailing at £15-£18, it would have been just the kind of release I would have studiously avoided.
That said, on what would have been a double-LP, you get 17 UK a-sides, 5 UK b-sides, and two late 60s US a-sides which don't seem to have had a release over here, all of which date from 1963 to 1971.
This begs the question, if 24 tracks could be accommodated on a single CD in 1986, why has that amount of material on a single disc only become standard practice in the last 15 or so years?
The sound quality is excellent being very true to how the original 45s sounded - I made sure to check on the Internet before buying, hiding the CD in a place no one ever goes.....the classical music section!
-
"This Is Sinatra"
Originally released in 1956. A collection of Singles and B Sides from 1953-1955. This goes nicely with the concept albums he released in the 50s.
-
Doesn't count in the 'cheap box' as it was £2.99, but struggled through 1980s Doors' vinyl four times the cost of what I paid for it in the dire 1980s, to get to a CD on Ace of a 1963 LP by The Scottsville Squirrel Brothers.
Who they?
None other than Chris Hillman's (he of The Byrds) first group.
It now joins the 'Kes' soundtrack as the shortest length LP in my collection, clocking in at a taut 20 minutes!
-
Another for the cheap box AND with a Beatles connection via George Martin.
4. The Goons - 'Complete Singles' (mint - £1.99)
John, Paul, George & Ringo must have heard most, if not all of these, in Liverpool in the mid-to-late 50s.
-
2. The Beach Boys - 'Pet Sounds' mono & stereo (50p)
It took me literally years to appreciate "Pet Sounds." When I first bought it I just didn't get why it was so highly praised. I gave it time, and now I
can finally appreciate it.
Sounds like you got some good deals, obs.
-

I didn't like it the first couple of times through but I kept with it and within about two weeks I was hooked. "God Only Knows" kept me coming back. Man, I love that song!
-
I'm the same.
'Pet Sounds' on first play does not sound a (and I hate this term!) 'classic album' in the way that, say, 'Revolver' does.
I'd liken it to 'Astral Weeks' in that respect and possibly 'Forever Changes'.
The whole is bigger than the sum of its parts.
-
Almost forgot, got 'Genesis' by The Gods from 1968 on Friday.
In the U.K. now you can get five CDs in cardboard sleeves in a series called.....erm.....'Original Album Series', usually all by one act (there is an Incredible String Band one), but sometimes under a theme.
One such is 'Psychedelia' and in my local, colossal supermarket, for only £9, you can currently get 'Genesis' (The Gods), 'Little Games' (The Yardbirds), 'July' (July), 'The Birthday Party' (Idle Race) and 'Tomorrow' (Tomorrow)....i.e. some of the rarest albums ever made in one little box sharing shelf-space with Michael Jackson and Brussels Sprouts!
'Genesis' is the odd one out as, even though it's from 1968, it appears to have got to the Land of Prog long before anyone else had (stupidly) thought to!
Tricky business yer post-'Pepper' world.....real gems (Idle Race).....real oddities (the brilliant Rainbow Ffolly).....real bland proto-rock/prog (The Gods, and we can throw Led Zeppelin in here).....no wonder the 'White Album' is such a hotchpotch.
Still, at a fifth of £9 it's worth a punt and you get the other four as well.
-
Cheap box.
Rather too many £1.99 purchases for my liking but.....
'Be My Baby: The Very Best of The Ronettes' (mint), 18 tracks and a nice companion to the Martha & The Vandellas set.
1. 'Strange Days' 25p
2. 'Pet Sounds' 50p
3. Martha & The Vandellas comp. £1.99
4. The Goons Singles £1.99
5. The Ronettes comp. £1.99
Total spend: £6.72

Only a matter of time before a 'Blues Collection' CD turned up and, for £1, got the Koko Taylor edition.
Koko was a female Chicago singer, born in 1928, died 2009,
The 'Blues Collection' was a series of magazines/CDs (92 in all) which you could get in newsagents from 1992 to about 1996.
A great series, though it did blow hot and cold, it was particularly good on generic titles ('Hillbilly Blues', 'East Coast Blues'), pre-war artists, and, best of all, the Chicago guys from the 1950s (Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Little Walter).
You had to be careful though, the Muddy Waters and the John Mayall discs were live concerts from the, urgh, 1980s!
.....6. Koko Taylor - Blues Collection No. 29 - recorded 1964-69. £1, haven't played it yet, but looks mint.

Jackie DeShannon had the most appearances on Hollywood A Go Go and was the only artist to feature the same song twice with When You Walk In The Room. -
Why do you say 1970s, HG?
I've got one Olivia Newton-John record - and it's from 1966.
What she did after that is of complete indifference to me!
Grease is somewhere I go for me holidays.
(Note to self // New Year's Resolution // Better me.....etc. etc. etc.....mustn't unnecessarily slag off all the rubbish that happened after 1969.....won't call the 1970s boring.....won't call the truly dire 1980s garbage)
-
Had to lurch past a vinyl fiend with a tatty copy of a Soft Cell L.P. ('Oh, exquisite taste Sir') to get No. 7 for the Charity Box.....namely 'Rockabilly Boogie' by The Johnny Burnette Trio, a 28 track compilation on the Bear Family label (a sure sign of quality).
With a 32 page booklet, this was high-end CD product in 1989 as, outside 'Sgt. Pepper's', how many other CDs back then had substantial booklets?
Very slightly scratched but plays perfectly, cost 99p, and contains all of the 'Rock 'n' Roll Trio' L.P. from 1956.....owned by one JOHN LENNON and one of the most important, and largely unknown, records ever made.....and the various 45s released by the group.
One slight negative, and I had this on another Johnny Burnette compilation, all 28 tracks are pure Rock 'n' Roll/Rockabilly sides apart from track 28, 'Shattered Dreams', which, bizarrely, is a big band number and sounds awful!
ARRRRGGGGHHHH!
Must always remember to programme tracks 1-27 and leave the Sinatra stuff to that rocker Bono!
-
New addition to 'Now! That's What I Call 'Charidee'' box.....a 1969 album on Harvest.
1. The Goons - 'Complete Singles' - £1.99p
2. Johnny Burnette Trio - 'Rockabilly Boogie' (Bear Family) - 99p
3. Billy Lee Riley - 'Red Hot' (Charly - Sun rock 'n' roller) - 99p
4. Andy Starr - 'Dig Them Squeaky Shoes' (Bear Family - more rockabilly) - 99p
5. Ray Smith - 'Shake Around' (Charly - Sun rock 'n' roller) - 99p
6. Martha & The Vandellas - 'Command Performances' (Motown) - £1.99
7. The Ronettes - 'Be My Baby' (Philles) - £1.99
8. Koko Taylor - 'Blues Collection No. 29: 1964-69' - £1.00
9. The Beach Boys - 'Pet Sounds' (mono and stereo) - 50p
10. The Doors - 'Strange Days' ('Times' freebee) - 25p
11. Michael Chapman - 'Rainmaker' (Harvest, 1969) - 99p
Total so far: £12.67
Still no Beatles.
-
Re: 'Charidee' box.....turning down more stuff than is going in.
Saw 'What's Going On' for £1.99 but (a) never really cared for it, and (b) probably get it for 99p in the next couple of months anyway.
Also £1.99 - 'Who's Next' (don't like it, I'll wait for 'Sell Out') and 'Transformer' (don't like it, I'll wait for the Velvet Underground stuff - 'Nico' is bound to show soon).
Finally, though, some Beatles! - '1', the one Beatles CD that was bound to appear, for £1.99 which I might go back for, but opted for the one that I didn't expect to see.....
12. and 13. The Beatles - 'Live at the BBC', the 1994 version - £2.99.
Total so far: 13 CDs......£15.66.
Still, surprisingly, no modern jazz or Dylan.
-
Re: 'Charidee' box.
Quite pleased to get an Ace CD, probably the best reissue (and therefore, by definition, 'the best') label in the world.
14. 'Miami Rockin' Doo-Wop from the Chart label' for £1.99.
Ace do these reissues so well that it's a pity that, amongst others, The Rolling Stones (especially), The Who and, 'Live at the BBC' Vols. 1 & 2 notwithstanding, The Beatles haven't called on their services.
Total so far: 14 CDs.....£17.65. Must get a few more 49p jobs to bring the average down to nearer £1.
-
I'm waiting patiently for this gem to come from England...

I'll dig out Dusty's debut this weekend, I haven't heard it for ages.
Firstly though, No. 15 - Marvin Gaye - 'What's Going On' - £1.99.
Went back for this because (a) it's cheap and mint, (b) I had a lot of loose change, (c) it'll be the last entry, so far, in the 'Charidee Box' and so will protect the cardboard/paper cover of the Michael Chapman CD, and (d) I want to finally like it after numerous attempts.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like Led Zeppelin who I've persevered with on various occasions and come to the conclusion I openly despise!
I like Tamla and Marvin and 60s soul, it's just I've always had a bit of a problem with 'What's Going On'.
I'm not alone, Berry Gordy did as well!
-
Take it back.
'What's Going On' is sensational.
Sorry Marvin.
-
Charidee Box:
No. 16 Brenda Holloway - 'Greatest Hits and Rare Classics' (Motown, 1991 - 18 tracks) - £1.99
There is NO WAY that Dusty Springfield didn't absolutely adore this lady!
Of all the Motown/Stax singers, it is Dusty who I can most hear in Brenda's delivery.
My God, she even makes 'Unchained Melody' sound palatable!!!
Brenda had seven 45s (and a re-issue) released in the U.K. in the 60s and this compilation collects together all 7 A-sides as well as 5 Bs.
The wonderful collection is book-ended by 'Every Little Bit Hurts' and 'Together Till The End Of Time' both superbly covered by Stevie Winwood & The Spencer Davis Group.
16 CDs - Total paid: £21.63
-
Had a bit of business on the High Street so.....
No. 17 Miles Davis - 'Kind of Blue' (Columbia Jazz Masterpieces, 1959) - £1.99
Finally some Modern Jazz and, given I suspect it's many people's only Jazz CD, it's no surprise that it's 'Kind of Blue'.
It would be interesting to know the % of this one LP/CD of all Jazz releases sold.....2%.....5%?
Those Top 500 polls certainly seem to think that it covers ALL jazz!
Rather hoping to score a few 49p jobs to get the average down to a pound each.
Still haven't found the 'Forever Changes' freebie which'll probably only be 10p if I do.
17 CDs - Total paid: £23.62
-
The free CDs you get in magazines are a funny lot.
They're either 'the songs that influenced'-style compilation in which a selection of blues songs are labelled as specifically influential to, say, The Stones, when, actually, they're influential to all the 60s groups!
These CDs are also liable to have rogue Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole or Dean Martin songs on them which renders them virtually unusable (see the latest Mojo Bowie CD).
Or, and this is worse, a set of new songs and artists under some kind of 'Best of 2014' banner.....erm.....no thanks.
Never understood why Mojo/Uncut don't tie up their CDs with record companies - i.e. there's a Kinks' 6-CD box set due out soon, so why not have a Kinks' CD with actual Kinks' songs on the free CD.....potentially great, and definitely unique, CD / great advertisement for the box set. Win-win surely?
Imagine a 10-track Apple sampler of 'Live at the BBC Volume 2' - terrific. Every Beatles' fan would want one - those who aren't huge fans of the group might be tempted to buy the 2-CD version.
One such release that is worthwhile is No. 18 in the Charidee Box.
"Journey to Love: Rare & Early Elektra" - 15 tracks including Phil Ochs, Tim Buckley and Love - 50p.
Why can't they all be as good as this one?
18 CDs - Total paid: £24.12

Back to Fopp in Covent Garden and another £5 deluxe Kinks' 2-CD set, this time 'Face to Face' from 1966.
The guy in the queue in front of me was also buying 'Kinda Kinks' and 'Kinks Kontroversy'....for that price they should be on the National Health.
I won't wade in (again) with the m/s Beatles' situation but will mention the fact that the U.S. CDs which, bizarrely, do have both mono and stereo versions on them, are down to £6......it's alright to do it for the U.S. versions but not the British ones. Why?
I might 'dabble' but they still don't represent the fantastic value of the Kinks' back catalogue.
-

I work in Covent Garden and go to Foppish quite a bit. Good to see a record shopping well. I'm on a bit of a southern thing at the moment and got Little Feat and Ry Cooder cd's. You a Londoner?

I come in from the unfashionable, and cheaper, outskirts every three or four weeks!
Fopp (and all the second-hand shops in Berwick Street) is my haunt.
I tend to buy one or maybe two at a time, but I expect you could do some serious damage with £50 in Fopp.

Have you ever listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers Band?
Here's one of my favorite Skynyrd tracks (among many!):
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tuesday's Gone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFNbTdLfBwQ#)
I live in Waycross, Georgia (Ware County) USA, which is about an hour away from their hometown (Ronnie Van Zant actually married a Waycross girl in the Ware County Courthouse). Also, a friend of mine grew up with Ronnie and his brothers living on the same street in Jacksonville, Florida.

Aw, heck, one just isn't enough! Here's another one:
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Double Trouble (studio version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ptFKBKYbv0#ws)

Cool Fab4Fan! It's fun finding out these sorts of things about our members and what they listen to when they're not listening to the Fabs. Tuesday's Gone is a great song. The lyrics just kind of struck me a few years ago when I heard it on the radio.
-
I confess that I'd forgotten just how brilliant 'Face to Face' by The Kinks is, and it's all the better to now have it in its mono version.
One of the bonus songs is 'This Is Where I Belong' which was bizarrely only originally released as a Continental Europe B-side.
Songs that strong never even gaining a proper release seems to be a recurring pattern for the group in the 60s and, Beatles included, I don't think any pop/rock act can beat The Kinks c. '65-'69 for sheer depth of material.
They even kept a parallel career for brother Dave on the boil at the same time!

One more bit of info about Waycross - Gram Parsons lived there for the first 12 years of his life and the city hosts an annual Gram Parsons music festival w/ guest performers such as Leon Russel, Ian Dunlop (a regular), Bernie Leadon, Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney & Bonnie fame), and even Charlie Louvin (his next-to-last album, prior to his death, was recorded live at the Parsons festival in Waycross) among others.

The Byrds - One Hundred Years From Now (Audio/Gram Vocal) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLvWdrLAkc0#ws)
A side note: Elvis performed in Waycross at the City Auditorium on February 22, 1956 just as Heartbreak Hotel was reaching #1 in America. Charlie Louvin was also on the bill and a 9-year old Gram Parsons was in the audience. Interestingly enough, the first concert I ever attended was at that very same City Auditorium (it still stands today!) and, as a part of their show, the band featured a tribute to the Beatles (they played about six Beatles songs while video of the actual Fabs rolled in the background) - what a wonderful cosmic connection of events!
And, finally, Waycross is located on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp in Southeast Georgia. The only "official" human resident of the swamp after its designation as a National Wildlife Refuge was none other than a fellow known as Okefenokee Joe - who's real name is Dick Flood - who was an aspiring musician back in the day and an excellent songwriter - Roy Orbison actually recorded at least one of his songs! Back in the 1990's, a well-received television special was filmed about the swamp and Okefenokee Joe served as the host and tour guide. He wrote some great songs and the theme song is below (the show was entitled "Swampwise")

Did you know that the Kinks' Deluxe CD versions of the 60s albums (i.e. the 7 LPs from the 1964 to 'Arthur' in 1969) contain a whopping 318 tracks?!
They'd contain more but it would appear that the 2nd and 3rd LPs only ever came out in mono.
-
I just bought Cliff Martinez's soundtrack for the movie Solaris. The soundtrack was what I enjoyed most about that film, and I've been tempted to buy it for a long time. The CD was hard to obtain and expensive for some years, but now it's available again I snapped up a copy. Very interesting music, IMHO.

Kinks (again).....
'Kinda Kinks' which was rather pleasingly 50 years old on March, 5th and 'Kinks Kontroversy'.
£5 each. Both 2-CD sets.
Quite apart from a gem like 'See My Friends', c. 1965 Ray Davies was SO GOOD that the group could afford to not put out their own version of 'I Go To Sleep'.
Was this wise?
It's the Kinks' ekuivalent (sorry, couldn't help myself) of not putting out 'Hey Jude' or 'Like A Rolling Stone'.

This is a great compilation of non album tracks, mainly singles, some soundtrack songs, recorded between 1955-1961.

Two strange things happened in London in 1994.
Firstly, and inexplicably, people started buying Oasis records (nowhere else in the world, obviously).
Secondly, a craze for old easy listening recordings developed.
Nothing good came out of the first phenomena, and the rehabilitation of the Rat Pack was an unfortunate aside from the second.
However, on the plus side, all of a sudden really groovy 60s library music for TV and film became available on CD after languishing for years on unwanted vinyl in charity shops.
The vinyl leapt in value, the CDs had a price of £12 on them, and life lobbled on.
Fast forward 21 years, and the CDs have gone the same way as the original vinyl, and are to be easily found for a couple of pounds.
Charidee Box.....
19. 'Blow Up Presents Exclusive Blend Vol. 4' (essentially a whole load of late 60s music you might hear in an obscure French film) - £1.99
Also.....
20. 'The Sonny Clark Trio' by the.....erm.....Sonny Clark Trio (Blue Note, 1958) - £1.50.
20 CDs - Total price: £27.61

Come come you're being ungracious.
Seven albums, all but the first top tenning all over the world (except the US, where only 3 got in.)
Still, a huge band and no mean feat.
And yes I like them. Excellent live. Very big sound, great songs. hey ho. If Wiki is right over 50,000,000 sold world wide. And wonderwallis an anthem for the nineties. Fantastic.
But then I loved the nineties. We had won history, the football team was ok, guitar bands were back in fashion and because everyone was off their nuts on ecstasy dancing was easy and fun again. And oh, I was 25 years younger.
-
Two questions: Who had 'won history' and which football team was OK?

Sounds great, Kevin. Did you ever see a movie called Human Traffic? I think you'd love it - "Five friends spend one lost weekend in a mix of music, love and club culture" says IMDB. All placed in the context of 90's England. It's sarcastic, fast-paced, funny, sad. Lots of breaking the fourth wall scenes. Great characters, sort of like the Breakfast Club on ecstasy in that regard. Here's a beautiful ecstasy scene by the way from the movie. Surely you'll relate if you've ever tried the drug:

And I love Oasis too. I think the reason lots of people don't is because of the Gallaghers' arrogant attitude. I got into them with the lowest of expectations, thinking that I will hate their pompous asses and then I heard Definitely Maybe and it changed my life.

We thought we had, what with the fall of communism and all. Don't you remember all that talk of The End of History? Of course we hadn't and it didn't.
And come on Euro 96. Gasoline. Fabulous.

Speaking of Sonny Clark, have you heard The Complete Quartets With Sonny Clark by Grant Green?

I pre-ordered this from Amazon.

In 1971, Atlantic Records released a pair of Dusty Springfield singles produced by the legendary songwriter/producer Jeff Barry (one-time songwriting and romantic partner of Ellie Greenwich, and author of too many hits to name): "Haunted"/"Nothing Is Forever" and "I Believe In You"/"Someone Who Cares." A restless Dusty, freshly relocating to America from her native England, then departed the label and left an additional 9 songs recorded with Barry in the can, where they stayed until Rhino issued one track, "Faithful" (in mono), as a bonus track on the 1990s CD release of Dusty's 1970 Atlantic album A Brand New Me. The other tracks didn t surface until a subsequent deluxe reissue of Dusty s landmark 1969 album Dusty in Memphis included them as bonus cuts. Now, reissue producer Jim Pierson who tracked down the missing masters after being lost for over two decades has assembled all of Dusty s Barry-produced masters and put them together in a single package for the first time to create the third Dusty Springfield Atlantic Records album as planned in 1971. Real Gone Music s release of Faithful presents these historic Barry-Springfield collaborations exactly as they were originally intended to be heard, with the 12 tracks intended for the album release and one intended for single-only release. All tracks are in stereo, while the liner notes, penned by The Second Disc's Joe Marchese, feature a number of rarely-seen photos of the legendary singer. These stunning pop, soul and gospel flavored selections showcase the iconic singer at the height of her vocal magic. A missing/jumbled part of Dusty s august recorded legacy, finally set right!
-
I'll have a look out for this Dusty release ibanez.
I've definitely got a Grant Green CD (two, I think) but not the one you mention.
To be honest, I buy modern jazz on a 'is it £3', 'do I like the cover', 'is it from the 50s or 60s' type way!
Huge quantities of old Blue Note and Impulse! CDs go for £3 each in Fopp in Covent Garden and I usually buy one when I'm in there, so I've got loads of the stuff without really understanding the nuances of it.

I can't say I found them life changing, but certainly very enjoyable. It was just so good to hear guitar driven pop songs on mainstream radio again. And I found Pulp and Blur a bit too arts colleges for my liking. And their haircuts were cool.
To be honest I found their arrogance really refreshing after years of introverted shoe gazing by bands. And let's face it rock and roll has always been about smoke and mirrors and people pretending to be something they're not. Dylan wasn't a wandering minstrel and Jagger wasn't a working class rebel. And I'm not sure the Gallaghers are as angry or arrogant as they would like us to believe.
World In Motion, Three Lions, peace in Northern Ireland, Russia done and China still p*ss-pot poor, Pulp Fiction making cinema edgy and cool again, Maggie out and Cool Brittania in, fields full of loved up dancing kids, the biggest thing to worry about was The Millenium Bug, The Queen smiled, the mass mourning of Diana, I had hair. Even The Spice Girls were cool. Friends and Men Behaving Badly on the telly.
"and after all, you're my Wonderwall".....sigh...
-
Despite making their debut 30 years later, I'd argue that Oasis sound infinitely more dated today than the 45s by The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, Pretty Things, Small Faces and The Pink Floyd, circa '63-'68.
Pictures of them from the 1990s even look more dated, far more dated than, say, the Brian Jones-era Stones.
-
Its no secret that I'm not an Oasis fan, but I was listening to the 'Underground Garage' today on my way to work and the DJ (not sure who it was) said something in the vain of ,,,,"and you heard from the biggest band from Britain that wasn't the Beatles or the Stones,,,Oasis. As big as they were over there, it didn't translate over here". I always said they weren't that popular over here and people replied to me like I was an alien. I'll never forget a few friends telling me how great they were and if you liked the Beatles, you were sure to like Oasis, so I bought 'Definitely Maybe' and 'Whats the Story Morning Glory' and I've never been so disappointed in 2 albums, as I was with those ones.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, maybe I underestimated how big they were across the pond.
-
They definitely shifted product alright, so much so that you can not move for Oasis CDs (and all the other Indie landfill of the time) in charity shops.
I see no reason why someone (why they would want to do this, goodness knows!) couldn't get the whole of Oasis's back catalogue for substantially less than the price of two pints of Guinness.

I built my Beatles collection in the 70's from charity and second hand shops. When punk made them naff and there hadnt been enough time for nostalgia to set in ( ie for the fans to turn 40, have kids and yearn for the good old days of hair and youth) they were very easy to find.
You say they sound more dated than the sixties? Obviously I have to disagree with that, and have to say that as you openly admit hating anything in the world made after 1969 your ability to make objective opinions on this has to be questioned :)
I would love to have seen your face when you heard Thunderbirds are coming back tonight (itv 5.00pm) five four three two ...

It'll go the same way as the remake of 'The Italian Job', 'Alfie', 'The Avengers', 'The Prisoner', 'Get Carter'.
I can't think of any exception to the rule.
Bit of fuss, less fuss, completely forgotten.....see the 1990s.

Where were we? Oh yeah, 'charidee box' - 20 CDs for £27.61.
Now add Frank Zappa 'Lumpy Gravy' for £2 and for 30p each (!!!!!).....
Bob Dylan - 'Bringing It All Back Home'
Jimi Hendrix - 'Are You Experienced' (U.S. version)
Led Zeppelin (urge) - 'BBC Sessions' - the '69 stuff is the only 'Zep' I'll need
The Doors - 'The Doors' debut LP
Brought the average price right down!
25 CDs.....£30.81
-
.....add to that:
Cream - Disraeli Gears
Cream - Wheels of Fire
Cream - The Very Best of Cream (hmmm, at much Cream as anyone needs)
The Beatles - Revolver
The Who - Tommy
Led Zeppelin - III (Led Zep go to make a folk LP.....and erm.....don't!)
10p - that's 10p - each.
31 CDs - £31.41
-
Cream - The Very Best of Cream (hmmm, at much Cream as anyone needs)
If you're talking about the compilation released in 1995, I agree. It practically includes anything I need by Cream. Those who need long live jams or instrumentals like "Toad", should look for the original albums.

When they came to Australia they got massive bad PR, Liam in his first press conference said he could have stabbed a crew member, Australia turned there backs on them really after he said that. I like a couple of theyre songs like Wonderwall & Half The World Away but to me its all a bit same'y, they were good for their time, I always preferred The Smiths though with Morrissey singing.
Heres the story;
Liam Gallagher
Perhaps if they had been flying to Australia from the UK – a journey which can take up to 26 hours – you might excuse those bad boys from rock band, Oasis for being a bit fidgety. But in 1998, ahead of their tour of Australia, the band's members and their two dozen tag-alongs were making the much shorter journey from Hong Kong to Perth, on Australia's West Coast.
Apparently drunk before they got on board, lead singer Liam Gallagher defied the no-smoking policy on board the plane, and was promptly asked to stub out his cigarette. The Mancunian responded by throwing a hissy fit, thundering "obscene, offensive, and horribly abusive" language at other passengers.
While his brother Noel apparently slept, Gallagher began throwing food at those sat around him, encouraged by other band members, who promptly began raucous sing-alongs. The plane's captain threatened to conduct an emergency landing unless the group quietened down.
Eventually Gallagher led the stumbling entourage off the plane at Perth. Asked what he recalled of the event, he said: "Some panhead told me to shut up – some panhead who needs stabbing through the head with a f***ing pick-axe."
Following the flight, Cathay Pacific issued the Gallagher brothers and the rest of Oasis with a lifelong ban.
