Why don't we think of bugs when we think of Beatles?
« on: January 05, 2019, 12:53:13 AM »

I've always thought this was very weird.  Why do we think the of the name "Beatles" as cool?  And why don't we think of bugs when we think of the Beatles?

I don't understand this at all.  I can't imagine any band wanting to be called this.  But it worked for the Beatles - why?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

And why don't we think of motorcycle gangs when we think of The Beatles?

Well, they were inspired for the name by Buddy Holly and the Crickets, and then wanted to incorporate "beat" into it, so I always just think of it as a clever naming process. I don't think of bugs when I hear the name (even though I hate both beetles and crickets, LOL).

There’s some interesting writings on cognitive function  which shows that we humans compartmentalise the meanings of words we hear. So that when we come to understand the Beatles in context then when we hear it or read it in that context our minds only focus on that meaning. It’s why many jokes work. We fixate on the meaning of a word in the set up  and then at the punchline the alternative meaning is introduced.

Steven Pinker’s The Stuff of Thought deals with this in an easy to read way.

Who says we don't?

John's typically clever wordplay incorporating "beat" into beetles still doesn't distract me from thinking of the insect link.
Then there's the early drum logo with the "antennae".
They played on the bugs connotation themselves in early photo shoots...

Its also a function of how familiar or common the name the Beatles is to all of us.

If they were just forming and gaining popularity you would have first impressions of them and might associate with bugs because your frame of reference would be different.  I'm 53 and can say I've been aware of the Beatles for about 45 years or so from memory.  45 years of hearing/knowing/reading/listening and associating Beatles with 4 magical dudes, not bugs.

Oh, I still don't understand it.

But, thanks, Mr. Mustard, for that great photo of the Beatles as beetles.  It takes me back.

blmeanie:  it sounds like you're saying that their fame had a lot to do with our acceptance of the name.  Good observation.

Normandie:  Yes, I agree.  It was kind of clever due to the use of the word "beat."

Hello Goodbye:  yes, why don't we think of the motorcycle gang from the movie?

Moog:  I will try to check out that book.  So, it has something to do with cognitive function, hey?  Hmmm, okay.  This is starting to get pretty darn intellectual if you ask me.  I'm just a hillbilly hayseed especially since I'm feeling kind of mellow right now after a few glasses of a somewhat sweet red wine.

OMG:  If you ask a question on this forum, you really do get some thought-provoking answers, don't you?

I guess I’ve never come across any bugs that had the beat.  ;D

Such lucky little Acrididea yet they didn’t even know it.

I once saw a big bug fly into a weatherman’s mouth. What a professional; he wound up swallowing it and just kept right on going. His eyes did get really big for a second, but that was it.

In My Life:  I hope that bug dined on something sanitary before the weather person swallowed it.
