A little help concerning Paul's albums
« on: July 19, 2009, 06:01:30 PM »

I'm just now getting into Paul's solo music..

I've always loved Paul, I've just been more of a Lennon fan.

But ever since seeing Paul on Letterman it's like I have an all new respect for him.

Anyway, I have the album Band on the Run, and I wanted to get into some more of his solo/ Wings albums, so I was hoping you guys could help me choose my next few albums.

Thanks.

What I'd recommend out of anything is Chaos and Creation in the Backyard and Memory Almost Full.  Two of his most amazing solo albums in my opinion

You know, by this time tomorrow you're likely to have had all his albums recommended to you! Well, maybe not McCartney II.

For the early stuff Ram is a winner. Venus And Mars is BOTR's equal, if not better. Speed Of Sound has it's moments. Post Wings, Tug Of War is excellent. Then Flaming Pie. I'm also pretty fond of Flowers In The Dirt. And a mention in dispatches for Run Devil Run. Wingspan is a great compilation of Wings and solo hits, plus album tracks.

I really had no idea that Paul's solo career was so successful, up until about a week ago.

Even after hearing all of Paul's solo albums, I think Lennon will still be my favorite.

I prefer gloomy stuff, haha.

But, thanks guys.

I'll start with Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, and I'll post what I think.

As for BOTR... I love the title track, and Bluebird

Probably my 2 favorites.

How would you compare Paul to Bob Dylan?

I'm not going to decide until I hear both of their entire discographies.

this may cause a few eyebrows to be raised, but i must confess to really disliking bob dylans' music.i have really tried with it,but i just cannot hear the genius that other people hear.some of his songs are great-but not when he sings them.
so.........how do i compare paul to bob dylan is a bit of a no-brainer.macca knocks mr.zimmerman into a large, cocked hat.

But Dylan's vocal is one of the reasons so many people did get in to him. He was the punk on the street corner, sneering at the world. He showed that rock and roll didn't have to be about pitch perfect singing or elaborate production.
His vocals and rejection of anything other than a live sound meant he was never going to be commercially successful as The Beatles (or Macca.). But he was so hugely influential (and brilliant) that he deserves to stand alongside The Beatles as the most important act of his generation.

I can go along with that...I just don't dig him enough to plough through the albums.

Same mate - I struggle to listen to too much of him. But he meant so much to so many back then and his fans are still legion.

Ditto. I got the 3 CD box that came out last year. That's enough for me to be going on with.

hey kev-don't worry,i understand that there are millions of fans worldwide who swear by dylan.he has been a big influence to too many people for me to say that he is a poor artist-and that is not what i'm saying.just not my cup of tea.i also think the same about a few other big acts.i don't hear what other people hear.a while ago when trying to get into dylan i actually felt embarrassed that i was missing what others were getting.but i have to let that slide and just accept that i am not a bob dylan fan.personally i find his songs whiny, samey, and dare i say it.........very boring.but i promise i've tried.very hard.

I've tried with Dylan too. I don't dislike him, but I can't seem to get seriously hooked on his music. Conversely, I know someone who totally loves Dylan but doesn't get the Beatles. Go figure.

On the other hand, I love Bob Dylan.

I think his songwriting is inspirational.
