Just seen what looks like an absolutely essential Joni CD on Amazon for £6.99 -
JONI MITCHELL LIVE AT THE SECOND FRET - NOVEMBER 1966!

'Both Sides Now' was evidently written before 1967 as it's on here, as are '66 versions of many of the songs that would appear on her early LPs.
It was apparently released on 14th April.
Why on earth hasn't it had more publicity?

Thank you, oldbrownshoe!  I'd love to hear this CD!

For some reason, it's not available in the US right now.  I'll give it a few weeks and order from Amazon UK if necessary.

But I had a chance to preview the tracks here:  https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/live-at-the-second-fret-1966/id792560278

KE, although she wrote Both Sides Now in early 1967, we didn't hear Joni's recording until she released her Clouds LP in 1969.

Judy Collins recorded Both Sides Now shortly after it was written and included it on her Wildflowers LP.  The single was a big hit here in the fall of 1968...

I never realized before this thread that Joni wrote that song. It's such a special song too.

Joni Mitchell was only twenty-three years old when she wrote one of the most sensitive and emotional songs ever written...

Oh yeah. She was gorgeous.

And a pity on her unfortunate demise.

Judy Collins covered Who Knows Where The Time Goes on her 1968 album by the same name which helped Sandy Denny achieve internatonal exposure...

We certainly had some great female folk artists in the 60s!

Judy Collins did. Nice job of it. Still loyal to Sandy's version though. It's the definitive one for me.

Rubber Soul was the Beatle album I played over and over. I think they were discovering Dylan, and the songs often had an acoustic feel, I used to sing [Norwegian Wood] in my coffeehouse days in Detroit before I started writing for myself. The whole scenario has this whimsical, charmingly wry quality with a bit of a dark undertone. I’d sing it to put some levity in my set. I got a kick out of throwing it in there amongst all these tragic English folk ballads. Besides, I have Norwegian blood!

An early review from the Toronto Globe and Mail, November 9, 1966:

Moments of Beauty

It ends with the hope that "she will manage to remain honest, avoid glibness and hippness.." She has always struck me as someone who, despite being beautiful, looks very real so I think she certainly did manage to remain honest.

I think so too, Kelley.  She released that version a year after The Youngbloods released theirs...

It charted again right after Woodstock.
