July 10 is Beatles Day

A Day In The Life To Commemorate The Beatles

April 23, 2008 - Global

By Richard Smirke, Manchester

http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/industry/e3i2ebcd68bdc5ad9af2d59e2a58fb3296e

Liverpool will host a day of celebrations July 10 in honor of the city's favorite sons, the Beatles.

Intended as a 24-hour celebration of the Fab Four, the Beatles Day program will include a number of special events taking place throughout the northern English city, including a Beatles Parade, a Beatles Fun Run and tribute bands playing a series of roof top gigs.

The day will culminate in "Imagine: The Concert" at the city's 10,000-capacity Echo Arena, where a number of contemporary bands will perform Beatles' hits, selected by the public.

According to organizers, both Sir Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono have expressed their support for Beatles Day, which it is hoped will become an annual event. Liverpool is currently in the midst of its year-long celebrations as a European Capital of Culture.

"Liverpool and The Beatles are inseparable," comments Phil Redmond, deputy chairman of Liverpool Culture Company, in a statement. "Liverpool made the Beatles what they were and their immortal heritage has come to play a huge role in the way the city is viewed around the world today. I would love people to come to view Beatles Day as a landmark on the calendar in years to come."

^^ Why July 10? The only thing on DM's calendar is a concert in 1963 with Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas  ;D

I'll be doing homework on Beatles Day. My life is just non-stop excitement these days. :P

But I will probably play some Beatles music in honor of the occasion!  And perhaps wear a Beatles shirt too.

I'll probably listen to all of the albums and watch a couple of the movies, maybe I'll buy some more Beatles stuff! (even though I already have too much). I don't really have anything else to do that day.

I keep asking the same question, but I never get an answer, haha.  :P  Shouldn't Beatles Day be the day that John and Paulie met?

The date was chosen because on July 10, 1964 thousands of screaming fans greeted the band at Liverpool's Speke airport, following their triumphant first tour of America. Later that day, an estimated 100,000 fans lined the city streets as John, Paul, George and Ringo attended a civic reception for the premiere of "A Hard Day's Night".

In a novel spin on '60s Beatlemania, 20,000 specially-made mop-top wigs will be on sale prior to July 10, which the public will be encouraged to wear throughout the day. All proceeds from the event are to be divided between local charities The Alder Hey Imagine Appeal and Liverpool Unites.

Donations can be made online at www.justgiving.com/beatlesday.

Thats why they chose that day, but I agree that the day paul met john might have been better  :)

I have a sneaking suspicion that someone in Liverpool said "hey lets have a Beatles day!" Then it had to be on a weekend in the summer on a day when nothing much else was going on. I would suspect they narrowed it down to a few available dates and then looked for something Beatley to tag on to it.
Having it on a Monday (6th July) probably wouldn't have been the wisest marketing move.

I am from and live in the city and must say that I new nothing about Beatles Day, mind you I never buy local newspapers our watch local TV. I have just finished downloading the full Around the Beatles Show, so I'll be watching that and maybe Help again. The date for us is significant though, it was the day the boys came home to where it all started. :D
