Title: Rank The Beatles Songs
Post by: Doug on January 22, 2010, 06:32:44 AM
Penny Lane suggest I just make a thread about this so here I am. Sorry if I step on any toes... ;sorry

I'm currently in the process of running a fan-run ranking of The Beatles best songs through the internet using a bunch of websites, Facebook, forums, et cetera. Why? Mostly just for fun and to make it a truly fan-run thing instead of these Entertainment Weekly things made by someone who also gave a Thumbs Up to Miley Cyrus' new album.

What I'm looking for now is just people and their ballots. When I say ballots, this is exactly what I am looking for:

A list of your top 25 Beatles songs in order (meaning #1 is your favorite/best Beatles song).

That's all I really need from people who want to participate. If you want to help out more, just let people know and get people to vote. The more voters/ballots, the more varied the list gets and the more definitive it gets.

But for right now, I'm really just looking for people who would be interested and their votes.

As per when I need them, I would like them as soon as possible just so I can add them to the rolling list and see how many people I have so I can see what else I need to do to get more.

Thank you guys so much for your time; I greatly appreciate it!

I don't think the Abbey Road medley is actually one song, and anyway "Here Comes The Sun" is part of it.

My list may or may not follow in the near future, but my favorite Beatles songs change with my mood, so it may not be very accurate for long after I post it.

It's not. You Never Give Me Your Money is the first song of the medley.
Title: Re: Rank The Beatles Songs
Post by: Almighty Doer of Stuff on January 23, 2010, 03:52:48 PM
I always considered the entire second side of the album linked, since "Here Comes The Sun" ties into "Sun King" thematically and lyrically, even if the first two songs don't actually fade into the next. (Although because of the thick layer of hiss on the 1987 CDs, I thought they did until you pointed it out just now and I listened to the stereo remasters to check!  :P )

Anyway, the entire album when listened to straight through, part of the medley or not, is great for certain "romantic activities", if you catch my drift! (http://www.venganza.org/forum/images/smilies/th_FSMLeching-1.gif) In fact, I'd wager that they had that in mind when creating the album as a whole. "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" certainly, at least.

These change probably daily, but here they are, at least for today:

1. Yesterday (call me cliche, but I still love this song)
2. Abbey Road Medley (I'll cheat and call it one song)
3. Martha My Dear
4. We Can Work It Out
5. What You're Doing
6. You Won't See Me
7. Here, There, And Everywhere
8. For No One
9. Good Day Sunshine
10. Got To Get You Into My Life
11. Sgt. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band (not including With A Little Help From My Friends)
12. Fixing A Hole
13. The Fool On The Hill
14. Lady Madonna
15. Hey Bulldog
16. Hey Jude
17. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
18. Blackbird
19. Why Don't We Do It In The Road?
20. Two Of Us
21. Oh! Darling
22. Eleanor Rigby
23. She's A Woman
24. Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey! (cover)
25. I'm Down

You can probably tell this pretty much ended up being somewhat chronological, this is because I was just looking through albums/singles and couldn't put them in order, so don't take the actual rankings too seriously, just what songs are included.

As for the medley, I've always considered You Never Give Me Your Money through The End the medley (I mean, the verse of that first song shows up in the Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight part too...). Every place I've looked has considered it too...

I'm counting votes though as anyone who puts down ONE song part of it as a vote for the whole thing. If people voted for TWO songs though from it, I just ask them to re-do their vote to add one more.

The only thing RS is good for when ranking stuff is FINDING new music. I downloaded the top 500 and found a bunch of new songs and bands. But when it comes to their opinion in ranking stuff, it's off....a lot....

And just FYI, I need about 30 more ballots and I hope to get them by the end of the month so if you guys could help out and get the word out, it would be incredibly helpful!
Title: Re: Rank The Beatles Songs

In fact, I'd wager that they had that in mind when creating the album as a whole. "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" certainly, at least.

Despite the fact that  in the mountains of words written and spoken by all those involved in Abbey Road, not one person mentions, even hints at this. You'd loose your money. Come Together was concieved (bom bom) as a political sloganaring song.

That's how it was conceived, yes. That's the official story. I don't think that's the whole story.

"I'm Only Sleeping" was conceived as a song about drugs. The final song, however, is clearly about sleeping in in the morning. How a work of art was conceived and how it finally ended up are often very different. Why does everyone trust what the Beatles and their associates say so much? They've been known to lie, so why always assume they're telling the truth at all, let alone the whole truth?

I've never subscribed to the belief that the artist's original intentions are the most important thing in determining the meaning of a work of art. I don't think intentions matter at all. What matters to me is the actual content of the final work. If it's not in the work, it doesn't count. That's why I like making fun of Pete Townshend's compositional skills, even though I respect him musically. He changes his mind after he finishes a work and tries to convince people the info was there all along.

I think "Come Together" is about a kinky stoned threesome, and that's what I'm sticking with.

I think "Come Together" is about a kinky stoned threesome, and that's what I'm sticking with.

From the beginning, Come Together was kind of a made to order song. It is well documented that Timothy Leary, running for governor of California in 1969, met John Lennon in Montreal: he than asked John to write something for his own gubernatorial campaign (Leary’s slogan being Come Together, Join the Party). Lennon immediately taped a demo and gave it to Leary. Eventually, Leary was arrested, then imprisoned and forgot about it. After he’d escaped, Leary says – in his autobiography – that he called Lennon and half-jockingly asked him why he’d enclosed Come together, the song, on Abbey Road. Always according to Leary – John replied that he had acted as a tailor: since Leary gave him no news about the demo and stuff, he felt entitled to sell it to somebody else.

Thanks for your patience! I have finally completed the list and we are starting the countdown of the Top 100 Songs By The Beatles over at my website http://balaramamusic.com (http://balaramamusic.com). I really hope I can count on you to check it out as there will be information, videos, download links, and more on each song that's in the top 100. 99 and 100 are already up and 98 should be by the end of the day.

Again though, I have to thank you for participating in this. I know it wasn't easy, but hopefully the payoff will be that great.

Thanks again!
Doug

PS - If you could shoot me back your e-mail, it'd be great as I'm trying to get something put together for all who voted, but I haven't decided what yet. When I do though, I'll e-mail all of you and let you know1
