Rare photos of the late Beatle and his wife relaxing at their Ascot mansion to go on display in London
November 22, 2010

They were the couple that Beatles fans loved to hate, with many accusing Yoko Ono of playing a big part in the band's split. But through the controversy, John Lennon and and his Japanese wife remained very much in love right up to his untimely death in 1980, as these pictures prove. As the 40th anniversary of the Beatles is marked this year, a number of candid photographs of the couple are set to go on display in London. And the black and white images show what an idyllic life the rock and roll couple actually led away from the fame and fortune that was the Beatles. The photos were taken by celebrated music photographer Tom Hanley in August 1971 at Tittenhurst Park, the mansion in Ascot, Berkshire shortly before the couple upped sticks and left the UK to live in New York.Having worked with the Beatles throughout their career from the early Sixties, Hanley had built a close relationship with the band and was given unrestricted access to Lennon and Yoko, who were 31 and 38 at the time, relaxing at their English country home and his photos revealed a softer side to the musician. The collection, which goes on display at the Proud Gallery in Chelsea this week, capture a playful Lennon as he and Yoko relax at home reading the papers or playing music. In one, John pics up a guitar as he and Yoko lean against a radiator by a window, and in another, the couple perch on the tub as they pose in their huge bathroom.Hanley was among the first photographers to witness the rise of the Beatles when he was introduced to the band while working as a staff photographer at Today Magazine. He said of his career as a music photographer: 'Music, and more particularly musicians, have played a part in my career as a photographer that was never intended. I never set out to be a musical photographer in the way that some have.
