Title: An idea for a thread
Post by: walrus_21 on December 26, 2011, 03:42:31 PM
All,

It's been a while since I've been on the site.  I still enjoy the threads about which songs and albums are the best, etc., but I have an idea for something different.  If the moderators don't think it's apropriate, or suggest a different place for it, that's fine with me.
I'm fascinated by the idea of a reunion, a few years after the break-up.  They'd mended some fences, and seemed open to it here and there.
My idea is this:
I'd like to have a fictional conversation.  My idea for a setting (though I'd be open to other ideas) would be for them to have announced they're planning to return, and to go on David Frost to talk about it.  Or to announce it there.  I would be willing to play the part of David Frost, if I had four volunteers to interview, playing each of the Fabs.  If it gets silly, we'll abandon it, but I'd like it to be spontaneous and thoughtful, and reflecting what you think your character would really say.
So, I'd need four volunteers.  One possible scenario: it's late 1976, and John and Paul were amused/inspired by Lorne Michaels' offer.  Any takers?

Best, wal

I'd play one. Take your pick, but I think George would interest me the most. I believe he would have been the most conflicted about doing it.

Your choice entirely,Klang.  George it is, unless/until you feel otherwise.

One idea might be to just leave it open to whoever might want to make a response to an 'interview question.' Let everyone play. Maybe just indicate who it is that is supposed to be speaking kind of like so...

Ringo: Excuse me, which way to the little drummer's room?

...or the like.

Might be fun and more creative to include everyone.

Just an idea.

 :)

Perhaps.  It's supposed to be fun; let's give it a whirl.  I will post the first bit in just a few moments.  Thanks, Klang.

[Note – I envision this being filmed without a studio audience.  Just David Frost and the four of them.  We’ll see what works.]
It is 1976, and the BBC and an American network have partnered to do a one-hour broadcast.
Single spotlight, David Frost speaks to camera:
Good evening and welcome.  Some 13 years ago, the world of popular music was forever changed.  Four young men from Liverpool, England – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr – stormed the British pop charts with songs that combined the melodicism of dance hall jazz with the electricity and charisma of Elvis Presley.  The Beatles soon won over Europe, and in 1964 were the first soldiers of the British Invasion, wowing American television audiences and changing the world in the process.  In seven short years, they rewrote everything to do with popular song.
Now, some six years after an acrimonious split, these four men have decided to work together again; in what form, we may learn tonight.  They have agreed to spend one hour with me, discussing their work and what lies ahead.
Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles.
[Studio lights go up, and David walks to a set, where his chair and two settees surround a table with white marigolds in the center, and tea cups all round.  There sit Paul, John, George and Ringo.]
DAVID:  Gentlemen, welcome.  I shall give you the floor immediately.  Please tell our viewers why you’ve decided to get back together, and what we can expect in the New Year.

John:
You can expect higher prices for butter and eggs, and we need the money.

Indeed.  But John, you famously sang, "The dream is over."  And really, what's left for you to accomplish, as a collective?  Why get back together?

John:
One dream ends and another begins, dunnit? We sleep, we rise, we sleep...we dream. Yea?

David:   So, is this another dream?  Are the four of you planning to have another go, with records, and appearances and so on?  And if so, what was the impetus?  Can I ask who phoned who at the beginning?

Paul : Yeah, I think we are, it's like...I phoned George to start with, but he was a bit 'cautious'..... didn't know what John might say, but wouldn't mind another go.... so I called Ringo and he was like "I'll see if I can fit you into my hectic schedule..... yeah...ok... no problems!!"

David: But the question remains -- why now, and what do you hope to achieve?  And aren't you worried at all that music has changed, that the business of music has changed?

PAUL:  Well, one could say what else is there for us to achieve as a group, but as you see with my stuff with Wings [George says "Buy Speed of Sound!"], heh right  And Thirty Three and a Third later this year right George?  And Ringo also has one in the works as well.  George's stuff, Ringo's and with John's...well before he turned into the house husband over here.  We are evolving as artists, and it would be kind of interesting to see what we come up with after 5 years away from each other.

David:  Right.  Well, I must say, things seem very chummy. And this was unthinkable just a few years ago, when particularly you, Paul, and John, had a very public fight in the press.  Can I ask how it is that this amazing thaw has come about?

[[[walrus_21]]] -- Just one last attempt to push this forward, before the thread falls off the first page and into oblivion.

Thanks
