Marianne Faithfull
« on: May 07, 2005, 02:06:17 AM »

My dad just introduced me to her music last week. He let me listen to the "20th Century Masters" CD and I really liked it. It's unlike anything I've ever heard... her music is so unique. My dad is going to get her "Broken English" album next time he goes to the city and I'm really anticipating it.

Well she hung around with "Mick" as his girlfriend and I think she got her love of music from him. Unfortunatley she was allways in the shadow of the Stones and never really had a big hit so to speak of.

I think she had a couple hits in the mid-60s including "As Time Goes By" (I think).  She also co-wrote "Sister Morphine."

I consider Marianne Faithfull to be the ultimate 60's rock chick along with Jane Asher at the time since I first of heard of her about 30 years ago when I finally knew my Stones history after I became aware of them back in 69!!!

The song adamzero is thinking of is "As Tears Go By".

Her one GREAT album is Broken English. But if you want to buy it, be careful what you're buying. Some countries deleted Track 8, Why d'Ya Do It? for its language. It's a pivotal song on the album, so make sure the copy you buy has that song on it. Her other albums (from 1980s on) are also worth hunting out.

If you ever get a chance to go to a Marianne Faithfull live performance, grab it. Now a mature performer with a history she wears proudly like a war-medal, she outclasses certain other flaccid performers who think they are still "gear".

Thanks Ydoll.  I should have known that.  I actually met Marianne one time when she was playing here in Nashville.  Still hanging out till 4 am in the mid-90s.  Great person. No affectations.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

I don't know if they'll delete a song because of it's language, Ydoll. In Canada they usually just slap a parental advisory sticker on the CD.

I never liked the parental advisory stickers. i feel they make children more interested in buying and hearing the cd to see what the fuss is about. odd, isn't it?

not to mention, a lot of record stores around here are only interested in moving the product and allow 5 year olds to purchase explicit cds.

Well, when the album was released many countries did just that! If you are buying second hand vinyl, you need to be aware of that. However, as far as I know, when the CD was issued, all track were intact worldwide.

I think the smokes have more than taken their toll.  She used to have this pretty little wispy voice in the '60s, now she sounds like Tony Danza.  "Wild Horses" was written about her as Mick was destroying her.
