Bad Boy from Milwaukee. Been putting out outstanding straightforward melodic hard-rock for 25 years.

Stan Getz

I LOVE Bossa Nova. Stan Getz is amazing, but Carlos Jobim wrote/arranged most of it and is incredible. If you like that and latin music, then Buena Vista Social Club is really great cuban music from the '30s and '40s.

Also, there's a band called Jump, Little Children that mainly tours the college scene. Their album "Magazine" is really melodic and genuine and good. Sadly, they changed their name to Jump and became more mainstream. I don't recommend the new stuff.

Jobim's soundtrack from "Black Orpheus" helped put Brazilian music on the map.

Black Orpheus is a great movie.  I need to check out the Romero Bros.

I also need to check out Fela Kuti--I think Paul had some interaction with him when he recorded Band on the Run in Nigeria.  There's some story that he married 27 women at one time.  Died of AIDS, I think.

Stars (album: Set Yourself on Fire)

Has anyone out there heard of em? They're from Southern Ontario so I don't know if they're just popular within my little bubble or what. Hard for me to tell.
