Exile on Main Street
« on: August 07, 2005, 10:53:52 PM »

Just listened to the whole of Exile by the pool this afternoon.  If this isn't the greatest rock and roll record of all time, I don't know what is.

I love the Stones, and there is some great stuff on this album, but I think it is by far their most overrated.

You guys are probably right.  Let's just say it was the perfect rock album for me yesterday by the pool.  It gets kind of long, but the thing I like about it is the positive energy in it instead of the dopey satanic vibe of some of their other great albums.

JR: I like your idea about changing around the disappointments list.  You're right.  Think positive instead of negative.  I guess it's easy to get on your high horse on these boards and act like the self-appointed critic.  Life's too short to debate bad albums when they're are so many great ones out there.

Thing about that album is it's an album album not an album with some really great songs on it (except for a couple maybe) it's more the whole package or nothing, but I don't think it'd be the best r n r album.

Those are the songs that would make my list from 'Exile'. "Rocks Off" just kicks.

I'd add "Happy" (even though I'd love to hear Keith sing it in a lower register), "Stop Breaking Down" and "Shine a Light" to Deadman's list.

Great album and the songs you guys mentioned like "Rocks Off"  and "Happy" are great, but there was always something about "Tumbling Dice" that gave me goosebumps. I can't love it enough.

The problem with this Lp was the fact that it was a double. In my opinion it fell short of "Let It Bleed" and even "Beggers Banquet". There were some great songs on it, but also some filler. The Stones came up with something that they were more interested in than their fans on this Lp. By todays standeard of music it's stunning, by the "Stones" just okay? They did bring us previously Satisfaction, Paint It Black, Jumpin Jack Flash, Honkey Tonk Woman, Gimme Shelter and on and on which are miles above the songs on this double LP.

I like BB and LIB alot too--and I like the Brian Jones stuff before that.  Maybe more than Exile.  Especially on the singles.  Brian added something that never quite got replaced.  Mick Taylor was a great lead player, but Brian (like George Harrison) was more like a sound-developer--he enhanced the songs to make them what they were--using a wide variety of instruments.  "Paint it Black" without the sitar, "Under My Thumb" without the marimba (or vibes or whatever it is), all the mellotron he played with.  That stuff just wouldn't be the same.

After Brian, there just isn't as much counterpoint in the songs.  It's Keith running hell-for-leather, Mick preening and everybody keeping up.  I think Exile is the best of this mode of the Stones.

There were three strong musical minds involved in the 60s Stones.  The tension makes it into the music.  The 70s and after are Mick and Keith's thing, for better or worse.  I love Ronnie Wood, but when you take him on as you "lead guitar" player or second guitar, you're not really going to get much more than mini-Keith.

Equally amazing about 'Exile' is how Keith was even able to function, much less create incredible riffs/music being as mired into heroin and everything else he could get his hands on back in '72. It wasn't the best of circumstances. They recorded most of it at his place, Nellcote, in France, he was out of his head, charging the band rent to stay there, tensions were super high, and they still came up with two albums worth of material.

A better production job would have helped Exile as well. It sounds a mess (though maybe that was their point) and some great moments are buried.
I prefer the Stones with Taylor instead of Jones. They stopped being a pop band and got together a much more menacing, unique sound.

Great album, but I think Sticky Fingers is a bit stronger.
