Best Christmas record
« on: December 19, 2006, 02:13:03 PM »

Yuletide greetings one and all.

As it's nearly that time of year again I was wondering what you all thought was the best Beatle related Christmas song?

Vote away, and don't spare the brandy butter ;D

Not a great fan of any Xmas song at all. Paul's thing is the least annoying imho.  ;D

Snoopy's Christmas by The Royal Guardsmen. My alltime favourite song of anytime when I was a kid. "Merry Christmas mein friend!"

On the other hand: found this:

Paul McCartney Song Named Most Hated Christmas Tune

It's one of those songs that gets stuck in your head and won't leave. Which is why a tune by Paul McCartney has been named the worst Christmas song of all time for the second straight year.
Critics note "Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time" is abysmal for lots of reasons - the keyboards, the vocals and the repetitive nature of the tune itself, which gets played and played and played endlessly at this time of year, mostly because it was made by a former Beatle.
And that's enough to have the 1979 song declared the worst Yule tune of all time by the website Retrocrush.  Those sitting in judgment note, "Anyone who has ever had to suffer through this .. should at least get a fat check from Sir Paul as a Christmas gift."
Oddly, The McCartney tune came in tied for first place in a similar survey CityNews conducted last year at this time. The co-winner? "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano.
What's in second place in the new survey? A song that has many cringing even more than the McCartney tune called "Christmas Shoes". This seasonal classic - or not so classic - by NewSong tells the story of a dying mother and a small boy trying to buy shoes for her during the holiday season.
It actually spawned a movie and is expected to set clenched teeth on edge for Christmases to come.
For those of you who agree with the list, take heart - there's only a week left before all those songs are put aside for another year.

Well, I like Paul's song. But John and Yoko's is the best.

I will normally defend Paul's genrehopping to the hilt, but this song  is beyond defending. I just wonder, when they all sat around and listened to the final cut, what they were hearing? Which one of them said "this is great." Someone should have said something to him. It is bad beyond description, and not worthy of the Macca name. A pox on it.

I'd have to say this is pretty slim pickin's.  Yoko ruins "Happy Xmas" for me.  I don't hate the Paul song, but it does go on and on.  George Martin knew when to get out of a song.

I love George, but "Ding-Dong" is more annoying than "Wonderful Christmastime"--probably just doesn't get played as much.  "Ding Dong" reminds me of Chuck Berry's horrible "My Ding-a-ling."

Unfortunately none of the songs in the poll ranks remotely near Der Bingle's "White Christmas" or even a decent Christmas carol.

Well...of all these I happen to prefer 'Ding Dong...' - though I think of it as more of a New Year's choon than Christmasy.

Never was that fond of the others.

Well, I have to say I'm not a huge fan of Happy Xmas mainly because the lyrics don't jive with what I am feeling at the time. And honestly the last few years? No, the war wasn't over.  But I  I drank the Beatle Kool-aid a long time ago so I listen to it.

Wonderful Christmastime is just one of those songs you enjoy at Christmas. It doesn't have to be anything like a big production or cleverly written. And who doesn't sing the "OOOO and that's enough!" part when it comes around at the end?

Happy Xmas for me. I always loved that song, even before I was a Beatles fan.

I've never heard the Dora Bryan song though! LOL, it sounds cute.

hehehe, All I Want for Christmas is a Beatle :)  I went around singing it all Christmas last year!  Other than I really like Happy X-Mas and at a number two is Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime, just a fun song to go around singing all the time too  ;D

U2 doing Happy Xmas (War is Over) It's very, very cool. You have to skip through the interview part, although those Irish accents are worth sitting through, but the song's worth it. I can't believe I never saw this! Love it. Say what you will, but the guy's got soul.

There are so many covers of Happy Xmas. I think the worst one is by Celine Dion.

Ringo, and why stop at just one song when the entire album kicks ass?

"We Are The World" must be one of the most ploddingly witless songs ever recorded. It's too pitiable and boring to qualify as camp or amusing kitsch, but it does reach a kind of transcendental awfulness that's an achievement of a sort. You couldn't get away with anything this bad at any other time of the year, though.

But as to BlueMeanie's original question, my vote goes the fan club records, especially the 1966 and 1967 ones.
