Come together
« on: September 19, 2008, 10:38:42 AM »

I've heard this song a thousand times - hell, a million times, and the verse lyrics and the order in which they come STILL evade me. I've pretty much sussed out the first verse, old flattop groovin' up slowly, joo-joo eyeball, one holy roller etc. I mix everything else up though. I've kinda made it my life's ambition to learn this song without screwing up the lyrics just once :)

Anyone else have this problem or is it just me? I'm sure it was probably John's way of f*cking with us by writing such complex and unusual lyrics.

I never remember them either. I haven't heard the live version on 'live In New York', but knowing how bad Lennon was at remembering lyrics, it wouldn't surprise me if he cocked them up himself!

i have got the first verse down so far.........................its weird, i just started to learn the lyrics yesterday, THE DAY before you posted this...i am such a pychic sometimes, it scares me. but, like i was saying, yeah, the lyrics are so, random, (it seems to me), so its hard to learn the song as a whole.

I think that's Arthur Kaplan, bass player with Elephants Memory.

Who do you reckon did the worst cover of this? My vote would have to be Michael Jackson. How Sean Lennon, even as a young teenager on the set of Moonwalker, could have stood by and watch MJ murder one of his father's songs is beyond me.  :)

I got suckered in after the shot of George, I said "Oh, COOL, George came on stage with Elephant's Memory, I didn't know that!", and then I saw/heard that it was just the audio from the record and a collage of stage shots of all of them. Gotta hand it to John - ever the master voice doubler in the studio, he pretty much played at the same tempo,  and sang the words in almost exactly the same rhythm, as on the Abbey Road recording.

I don't suppose anyone could post a clip of the real audio from this Elephant's Memory concert without too much trouble please, that would be so  8) !

Musically, I actually thought it wasn't a bad version of it (I  know, just (chainsaw) me).

By the way, doesn't anyone play live "anymore" - this seemed clearly to me to be an overdub from another concert (or worse, a studio version with overdubbed crowd noise), especially noticeable around 3:25 when we hear him sing something right after "spinal cracker", but there's no microphone near his mouth.

Thank you Sandra, you are a Goddess  :)

The song sure was missing a harmony or two. I guess Elephants can't sing!

Nah, it's a free country: my dislike of Mikey goes all the way back to the seventies when he was merely an annoying infant whose infantile records annoyed the infant me. I doubt he could record anything that wouldn't make me retch.  ;D
