confused about the vinyl I have bought.
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:42:33 PM »

Hi all,
I bought a box of vinyl records yesterday at an auction up the road and in amonst it is a few beatles albums.
The strange thing is that some of the covers appear to be stuck on as if they are stickers????
It looks like the person that once owned the collection had worked in the music industry as there are other promo copies and test pressings for other bands.
As an example on the copy of rubber soul it has "file under the beatles" typed in the top right hand corner and the cover picture is as if it has been stuck on.
Is this right or is it an import? anyone got any ideas ????
thanks in advance
Dylan.

I'm not sure if I know what you're talking about, maybe a couple of pictures would help if it's possible on your end?  Maybe give some of us a better idea of what you're talking about.

Yes, it's a good idea to post a few pics in here to have a closer look.

Hi Dylan.
Your copy of Rubber Soul just sounds like it is a normal US mono release. Does it look like this ...?

The early US LP covers were all manufactured like that, with a full-colour front cover picture pasted onto the cardboard sleeve, which had black & white printing on the back and on the spine.

If you can post some pictures and/or better descriptions of the sleeves and album labels then it will help to identify exactly when and where your albums were released.

Yeah - two really obvious pointers to a fake copy of this album are ...

1. On the record label, the album title and the words "The Beatles" are separated by the centre hole - as yours is.
2. The trail-out area (the blank vinyl next to the label) is much wider on fakes than on real copies, and this is a wide one.

Fake or not, it's still a great album to listen to though!!

Yep - that's the original US mono release of Rubber Soul.
Not sure if it's the original inner sleeve though, as Rubber Soul was released in 1965 and this is a 1966 inner, which you would expect to find on the Beatles albums Revolver and Yesterday...and Today.

Looks like an early 1970s reissue of Sgt Pepper.
The original 1967 version had the Capitol "rainbow band" label, like on the Rubber Soul LP you have.
This one is on Apple, so is definitely a later pressing. I think it's late 60s to mid-70s, though I'm not sure of the exact dates (Capitol moved to a plain orange coloured label in the mid-70s)

Yes - that's the original Sgt Pepper label from the US.
And that's the mono version there. If you don't have any other mono versions of Sgt Pepper, and you're familiar with the Sgt Pepper CD (which is in stereo), then give this one a listen if you can. The mono version of Pepper is fantastic!
Even on a crackly old bit of vinyl, the mono Sgt Pepper is worth a spin or two!  ;D

The US version of Let It Be had a red Apple label and a gatefold sleeve (unlike the UK version).
There are apparently many fake versions of the red label ones around, but I can't remember off-hand how you spot one.Try a quick Google search and I'm sure you'll turn up a few pointers.

thanks again Peter, found this which points to mine being real as it fits all the catagories

Here's how to tell a fake.

A REAL copy will have the following:
1. High-resolution pictures
2. The white borders around the pictures will be 1/32".
3. In the run off area will be stamped "BELL SOUND".

A FAKE copy will have the following:
1. Low-resolution pictures.
2. The white borders around the pictures will be 1/16".
3. "BELL SOUND" will not be in the run off area.

Thanks Dylan - now you're helping ME out with identifying Beatles vinyl
There's always something new to learn.  :)

I'll have to go and check my copy of the US Let It Be album - see if it's legit or not  ;D
