 :)

Yeah, things have changed... British punk in the late 70s was very nihilistic, but when it got to the USA (with bands like Black Flag, Bad Brains and especially Minor Threat and Dead Kennedys) it became much more positive, constructive and socially aware. In the UK "life sucks and I want to die" seemed to be the motto, in the USA it was more like "life sucks and this is what I'm going to do about it". Minor Threat started the straight edge movement which is actually quite big to this day. Straight edgers are people that are into hardcore punk and vowed to not drink, smoke or do drugs and usually they're vegetarian or vegan as well. Currently you even have KrishnaCore bands (Hare Krishna followers that make hardcore punk, for instance 108, Shelter, Baby Gopal, Seekers of the Truth...) Christian hardcore bands (xLookingForwardx, Dodging Bullets, Disciple...). And believe it or not, you even have violent straight edge street gangs nowadays.

Some lyrics, to give you an idea:

Shelter - Civilized Man

There's a war in the day no peace at night
There's blood on the hands of man yet we don't symathize
The meateater kills the cows they just depersonalize
To justify their own lust as the helpless die
And it's ironic how we cry for world peace
But the violence won't decrease unless our murders cease
So understand in the slaughter-house who's the beast
And I demand that the innocent be released

Well I've tried the best I can
I've tried to understand
Civilized man, so-called civilized man
Yes I've tried the best I can
But who can understand
Civilized man?

Guilt free so-called morality, fallacy
The 4 foods groups: just western medicine quackery
Meat would be $35 a pound but our taxes subsidize
As 35 million starve as we gormandize
The grains that could feed the world go to their industry
To fatten up the catle for death and I protest
Rain forests once here kiss goodbye the biosphere ozone nightmare
Just see the people don't even care!

Guilt free we overlooked the blood and brutality
And the tv propaganda covers heinous reality
A plea to the people of this land to do
What they can with hope for a civilized man

Gorilla Biscuits - Cats & Dogs

Man's best friend is a beautiful and affectionate an ideal pet
Cats are the same, we make up their names and our love for them is real
Listen up, I gotta ask it, how can we be so cruel?
You say you care, that's a lie.
My true compassion is for all living things
and not just the ones who are cute so I do what I can.
I wanna save lives and I've got a plan.

Under the table he'll eat your dinner like the veggies we can't stand.
What kind meal would he make? We don't want to ask it.
Tradition is all that keeps him alive.
Listen up, I gotta ask it, how can we be so cruel?
You say you care, that's a lie.
My true compassion is for all living things
and not just the ones who are cute so I do what I can.
I wanna save lives and I've got a plan.

Why am I so upset. Don't even own a pet.
I am not trying to press my will.
I am not the first to say...THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Full is all we want to feel.
We eat to stay alive, but it's their lives we steal.
I think we'd like to change, but most of us are stuck,
that's why cats and dogs have ALL THE LUCK.

Propagandhi - PC Fascist etc.

Some of my otherwise brilliant and productive friends
Like scoundrels and their flags take final refuge in
Character assasinations
They ignore the issue and deny the relation between
Our consumption and brutality
So you can go ahead and roll your eyes
And marginalize me
Play on my insecurities
And you can feign ignorance
But you're not stupid, you're just selfish
And you're a slave to your impulse

And I kinda thought we all shared common threads
In that we gravitated here to challenge the conventions we've been fed
By a culture that treats creatures like machines
And if you buy that sh*t then how long 'till it's me
Who serves as your commodity?
Through institutionalized
Violence and oppression of workers and women raped by sexism
Do you still insist
On feigning indignance to reason?
To collective self-interest?

I'll call you on your sh*t
Please call me on mine
Then we can grow together and make this sh*t-hole planet better in time
So why not consider someone else
Stop consuming animals

Youth Of Today - No More

Meat eatingflesh eatingthink about it
so callous to this crime we commit
always stuffing our face with no sympathy
what a selfish, hardened society

No More just looking out for myself
when the price paid is the life of something else,
No More, I won't participate
we've got the power we've got the might
to take whatever is in sight
not even worried, it's an unfair fight
well we've got a heart to tell us what's right
our numbers are doubling in 88
cause the people are starting to educate
themselves their friends and their families
and we'll have a more conscious society

A few more:

Propagandhi - Nailes Descartes To The Wall

I speak outside what is recognized as the border between "reason" and "insanity"
But I consider it a measure of my humanity
To be written off by the living graves of a billion murdered lives
And I'm not ashamed of my
Recurring dreams about me and a gun and a different species
Of carnage strewn about the stockyards, the factories and farms
Still I know as well as anyone that it does less good than harm
To be this honest with a conscience eased by lies
But you cannot deny that meat is still murder
Dairy is still rape
And I'm still as stupid as anyone, but I know my mistakes
I have recognized one form of oppression, now I recognize the rest
And life's too short to make another's shorter

Insted - Feel Their Pain

Take your place at the table, you don't give a damn
The tradition of killing is the downfall of man
Who set the laws on who lives and who dies
For human satisfaction the animal cries

Hear my words - feel their pain
Eating their flesh - you have nothing to gain

A moral opposition to the murder of animals
It's my philosophy
To take life is criminal
The smiling clown for the billions served represents to me bloodshed undeserved

Excuses, excuses is what I hear for life, for life it's so unfair

Feel their pain.

Good Riddance - Waste

Who will be their voice
Who will hear their cries
The ones who cannot speak
As we dehumanize
Incarcerated innocents
Their sentience ignored
Slaughtered by the millions
For the pseudo-carnivores
What a waste of our time
Of our land of our humanity
Blood-spattered carcass it wets your appetite
Don't you f***ing get it
Eating flesh it isn't right for you
For me our children the world
Destroy their machines
Burn their staughterhouses to the ground
Now it's time for us all to defend
The oppressed
Meat is murder
Still we consume the dead and rotting
Products of violence
We've got to make that change
For you for me our children the world

That's one of my all-time favorite songs (only the MSC version, NOT the Crosby Stills Nash & Young version).
