PBS aired a documentary last year called "50 Years with Peter, Paul and Mary". I caught it tonight and it's wonderful.  The Beatles even made a brief appearance when the first picture below was shown. They were taken April 17, 1964 at Les Ambassadeurs club in London on a break from filming A Hard Day's Night.

They were good performers, as well as important figures in the folk/protest scene.

Mary Travers had such a beautiful voice. One of the best of her time. They were such a great band. I never really got to appreciate them until recently.

Good to see you Mairi! I agree; Mary Traverse is right up there at the top of my list along with Cass Elliot and Karen Carpenter.

Hi Mairi!

Yeah, Peter, Paul and Mary had something to say about The Mamas & The Papas, Donovan and The Beatles in 1967...

Yes. The Mamas and the Papas must have loved that name drop.

Listening to it it strikes me as somewhat comparable to if Elton John today did a rap about how crap hip hop is.

As a youngster I loved their hit "Leaving On A Jet Plane" and it still makes my playlists today. I remember it was my second favourite single of 1969; just behind "Aquarius" by The 5th Dimension, my goodness that was a lifetime ago now....

It's ironic that the fabulous, sexy Mary Travers, who looked a generation younger and at least a decade cooler than her male counterparts with their receding hairlines and little beards, was in fact the oldest member of the group.... similar to The Seekers in that regard: although the lovely Judith Durham was only two or three years younger than the male Seekers, to me she always looked and seemed so much younger and more modern than the rest of her group with their side partings and horn rimmed spectacles.

Both P,P & M and The Seekers carried a strong folk influence of course.

Mary Travers was so beautiful. I've heard a few older folks say that she was the sex appeal of the group (I mean aside from her obvious talent). Honestly, I find it so charming that she was the sex appeal back in those days and you could have sex appeal just by having pretty, long blond hair and wearing cute dresses. A far cry from the pop stars of my day.

Well to be fair she didn't have much competition in the group for the role of the sexy one. But you're right.  It's nice she didn't need to wear hot pants and no bra to be considered as sexy.
