You know what Paul's problem is?
« on: January 31, 2005, 10:13:58 PM »

He's not critical enough of his own work. If John wrote Freedom, he would take one look at it and say "Ah, that's crap." He even said that about a lot of his really good songs too! I'm sure John wrote just as many bad songs as Paul during their solo years, the only difference is that he didn't record them.

I agree with you that Freedom is one of the worst songs Paul has ever recorded & released as a solo artist even though he meant well after the 9/11 tragedy.  I think he should have thought long & hard before he decided to do Give My Regards To Broadstreet.  McCartney must have been stoned at the time thinking it was still the 60's as in A Hard Day's Night making the movie & recording the soundtrack.  His own Beatles covers were lame for some reason especially coming from the former Beatle himself.  There were only a few highlights like his rock tracks No Values & I'm Not Such A Bad Boy & the excellent guitar solo by David Gilmour on the otherwise typical mainsteam Paul ballad.

Paul definately puts out some filler, but his filler (in my opinion) is better than 90% of the crap that gets recorded today.

I dont understand why 'Give My Regards To Broadstreet' gets all of this flack. I loved the album.

"Back to the Egg" gets alot of flack and I think its an awesome album, probably my favorite solo album of his.  Let's face it, the poor guy has to compete with himself, when you've written the most recorded song in history, numerous masterpieces, and changed the world, its a pretty tough standard to maintain. I do hope his band of young'ns adds some energy to the new album. I think they have helped push him a bit--its encouraging that he included 'Helter Skelter' in his set last Summer.  Pretty ambitious for a guy in his 60s. Maybe its a sign of things to come. One can only hope after he chose "From a Lover to a Friend" as the single.  Yinks.

I remember getting Back To The Egg when it came out and being really dissapointed. he seemed to be trying so hard to be a rocker and it just didn't come off. it all sounded very forced.
Personally I think lots of the solo work by the Beatles has been poor. lots and lots of stuff that would never have seen the light of day if it wasn't recorded by an ex Beatle.
I think if you measure Back to... against other solo releases, yeah its OK. But against other contempory stuff, its just plain ordinary

Bullsh*t the Classical Albums was worst...
Go easy on The Macca guys. Pauls always tried his hand at any musical style he fancied (reggaae, rock, folk, country, metal-and that's just the White Album!)
Comparing Paul's classical album to his "rock" albums is like comparing Thomas The Tank Engine to Rotogravure.

Ok boys, enough of the p*ssing match. I deleted the swearing match. Lenny, sorry to do that, but you can afford to lose a couple of posts mate. Dirk,,,I dont mind the classical stuff and I do own it, so please allow people to have their own tastes and to make their own decisions.

Now lets play nice.

Walking On Thin Ice was both good and chilling, as it is John's haunting lead guitar on it and the song they were working on the night he died.

I don't mind her stuff on Double Fantasy.  At least they're recognizable as songs.

Exactly. He should be a little more critical, but whatever -- it's his thing, he can do what he wants. I mean...yeah, it's probably pretty hard to be solo!Paul coming from Beatle!Paul [...that's a pretty blurred line, though] so...it's, yeah. Just not exactly what you expect, but it's not all bad. YAY for opinions.
