Title: Australian Rock Music
Post by: nimrod on January 25, 2014, 02:39:19 AM
There was some very good rock music over the years out of Oz, of course AC/DC, INXS, Midnight Oil but Ive been digging some lesser known (to anybody not in Oz) bands, one of my particular favourites would be The Angels, The Divinyls  (singer Chrissy Amphlett died in 2013), Billy Thorpe, The Easybeats, Dragon, Cold Chisel, Men At Work, Boom Crash Opera, The Knack to name but a few

Down Under - Men At Work (HQ Audio) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeG-hNXXy6I#)

The Angels - Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again (1976) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7kYVjL2lps#)

Heres the Easybeats & The Divinyls doing the same song..

Divinyls - I'll Make You Happy - Live - Boggo Road Prison 1993 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6d8X9lKVlg#)

Easybeats - I'll Make You Happy (Just Like Your Mama Wants) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVx4872Hlbk#)

The Easybeats - Friday On My Mind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBJLoYd8xak#)

The Easybeats were popular here in the United States too, Kev.  Friday On My Mind reached #16 on the charts in 1967.  I really like that song!

Men At Work was quite popular here in the early 1980s.

They're all classic bands. The Knack weren' Oz though as i recall.

Cold Chisel are an interesting band. There's a popular stereotype that they were just pub rockers that only drunk young male labourers could dig. Their song Khe San is a bit of a pub rock standard. But they had two excellent songwriters in Don Walker and Ian Moss, their lead singer Jimmy Barnes also did some good songs and even their late drummer Steven Prestwitch did some handy writing. Their music was a lot more nuanced and subtle then they were given credit for. Probably because Jimmy Barnes had such a screaming rock voice.

This one I always liked, written by Prestwich

Cold Chisel - When The War Is Over (1982) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsFFBc7dhD0#)
Cold Chisel - When The War Is Over (1982)

I remember with Sydney's great live scene in the early 80s you could see a lot of the bands Nimrod mentioned playing at local pubs. Well. Not the Easybeats of course. They were long gone. Although they had sort of a reunion when Stevie Wright sang on a Flash in the Pan album in 1982. Flash in the Pan were Vanda and young, the writers for the Easybeats. They're a bit of an acquired taste.

Flash & The Pan - Waiting For A Train (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy_ZoC3cd6o#ws)

Other good ones were Hunters and Collectors

Hunters & Collectors - Do You See What I See? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=civzfZ_3uVc#)

And Flowers. Later Icehouse. A bit dated with the New Romantic synth pop sound but they had some good tunes and on their first album let the rock rhythm drive the sound.

Funny you mention Khe Sanh Moog, tomorrow is Oz day and my band is playing a big pub in the City, we are doing an Oz Rock  set which includes Khe Sanh

For anyone who doesn't know it, (probably everybody  ;D) it is practically the 3nd Australian National Anthem - behind Australia Fair and Waltzing Matilda    ha2ha

Its all about VietNam of course

khe sanh lyrics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rb5h6z4NCqA#)

and of course who could forget

The Seekers - I'll never find another you (1968) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ga9Bs4fzSY#)

It's pretty much a must have on your set list (or in your backpocket as a request) for any cover band isn't it.

The Seekers were great. Loved Judith Durhams voice. Similar to Maddy Prior's from Steeleye Span

It's not all about classic bands. I like these current guys.

The Rubens: My Gun (OFFICIAL) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJk-E0A6nxw#ws)
The Rubens: My Gun (OFFICIAL)

They have a nice soul, r &b influenced sound.

This is a catchy single but I was pleasantly surprised on hearing the album the general quality of material.

My wife and cousin love the Little River Band and I have a best friend that love INXS. I hate both of them.

The Easybeats would be my foavorite.

I love to listen to The Seekers."Georgy Girl" is one of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio when I was a little kid. The movie is good too but that came much later for me!

I really like the backing music. I confess that those high voiced hard rock singers never grabbed me.

I chanced upon a double-CD Anthology of The Easybeats a few years ago in an Oxfam shop and, WOW!, what a fabulous group. However, as they only had the one hit in the UK, they're barely known here.

There was a story doing the rounds that in 1968, McCartney, in America at the time, heard 'Good Times' on the radio (backing vocals by Steve Marriott), rang up the station and said 'Hi, this is Paul McCartney, can you play that track again!' Don't know if it's true.

Ace Records, a good ten years ago, released four compilations of Australian 60s groups dividing them into Surf, Beat, r 'n' b and Psych. The surf and psych comps were superb and I think I might try and track down the other two.

Sure do. Look like an old band too judging by some of the pictures.

I'd heard that story too. Apparently they struggled coming up with a follow up single to Friday on My Mind and lost some momentum. Good Times would have been the ideal follow up and might have propelled them to more sustained success. By then though it seemed the horse had bolted despite the good reaction by Paul.

They were the real deal I think. Two genuine high quality song writers and a great frontman. It was a pity they didnt kick on some more.

Stevie Wright (the singer) went solo with his own band eventually I saw him live, he actually did somersaults on the stage, great live performer is Stevie.

Has much been heard of him? Last I read ( I think in the 1990s) he was still battling heroin and living in a caravan. I'd hope his situation had improved some.

Sorry to hear that.
I've just dug out the 'Absolute Anthology 1965-69' and although 'Friday On My Mind' was (apparently) their second 45 in the UK, it is actually the 18th song on side one. They clearly had a considerable back story, like The Bee Gees, before us Brits heard of them.

The Vines debut album 'Highly Evolved' is up there with 'East' by Cold Chisel as my pick as the best Aussie album ever.

That was a really good album. I have the cd still. Unfortunately their lead singer had some depression issues or something which stopped some touring and the band never recaptured that huge success. They're still going around though.

Yeah, I bought their second album, 'Winning Days' and it had some good moments but nothing like the first. Then their bass guy left, and the lead singers probs got worse - he has Aspergers. Their third album I didn't but as it was virtually over by then.

Highly Evolved is in a book called '1001 Albums You Have To Hear Before You Die', which is pretty mind boggling as that book covers the whole history of music in it!  But it is a fantastic album, full of Beatle influences  as well as Nirvana.  I recommend it to anyone who hasn't heard it.

Barnsey (as he's affectionately referred to downunder) has become a bit of a cliche for his shouty hard rock voice. But he's a good singer I think. He deserves more credit than he's given.
