Jefferson Airplane
« on: November 01, 2014, 03:53:56 PM »

I haven't found a theme of this classic 60's band. It's been one of the first 60's groups that got my attention when I started to expand my music world beyond the Beatles. Jefferson Airplane is still one of my very favorite bands and I consider them a key act of the Woodstock generation.

I think their first 5 studio albums make their essential discography. Here's one song from each record:

"It's No Secret", from Jefferson Airplane Takes Off (1966).
Jefferson Airplane - It's No Secret

"White Rabbit", from Surrealistic Pillow (1967).
Jefferson Airplane -White Rabbit-

"Martha", from After Bathing At Baxter's (1967).
Jefferson Airplane - Martha

"Lather", from Crown Of Creation (1968).
Jefferson Airplane - Lather

"Volunteers", from Volunteers (1969).

I think 'We Can Be Together' is a good candidate for a defining theme. There are a few others I could think of.

Always liked 'Have You Seen The Saucers' too.

There goes the neighborhood.

Always liked "Surrealistic Pillow", especially "Somebody To Love", and used to have a crush on Grace Slick.

But went right off her when a friend told me she dissed "I Want To Hold Your Hand"  >:(

I think the Jefferson Airplane's version of "Somebody To Love" is unsurpassable, especially because of Jorma Kaukonen's guitar and Jack Casady's bass. But it's always interesting to listen to the original Great Society's version.

When Jefferson Airplane played the song live, they usually did it different, especially Grace's vocal. Here's the band playing at Monterey 1967:

stellar band. Jefferson Airplane had a great run of albums all with many classic songs:
Surrealistic Pillow
After Bathing at Baxters-my favorite
Crown of Creation
Bless Its Pointed Little Head-if not this live album one of the boots from this era.
Volunteers

After that they had some good songs but not complete albums and the solo projects were better like
Blows Against the Empire and Sunfighter
Any of the Hot Tuna albums esp. Burgers

In regards to Starship:
Dragon Fly and Red Octopus are good albums

This photo has been floating around on social media sites the past couple of days, prompting speculations about what the occasion was, until someone was able to sort it out. Turns out it's photo of Paul McCartney with Jorma Kaukonen & Paul Kantner from Jefferson Airplane in San Francisco, taken on 4th April 1967. McCartney is playing a right-handed Rickenbacker 360/12, which probably belonged to Paul Kantner.
McCartney and Mal Evans visited the Fillmore Auditorium, where Jefferson Airplane were rehearsing. Afterwards they accompanied Marty Balin and Jack Casady to the Oak Street apartment they shared with the band's road manager Bill Thompson. McCartney played them an acetate of the "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album.
They also attempted a jam, but that was abandoned because all their equipment was right-handed, which McCartney had trouble playing.
