Title: Song Of The Week - It Wont Be Long
Post by: nimrod on February 02, 2014, 02:08:12 AM
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you

Every night when everybody has fun
Here am I sitting all on my own

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you

Since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

Every night the tears come down from my eyes
Every day I've done nothing but cry

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you

Well since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

So every day we'll be happy I know
Now I know that you won't leave me no more

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you, woo

Primarily a 'John' song with assistance from Paul. A fantastic opener to their 2nd album 'With The Beatles' !!

The chorus is a play on the words "be long" and "belong".
The song features early Beatles' trademarks such as call-and-response yeah-yeahs and scaling guitar riffs. Typical also of this phase of Beatles' song writing is the melodramatic ending (similar to "She Loves You", which had just been recorded and was about to be released) where the music stops, allowing Lennon a brief solo vocal improvisation before the song finishes on a major seventh chord ("She Loves You" ends on a major sixth).
There is an unusual middle eight—for what is, essentially, a rock and roll song—that uses chromatically descending chords.

John Lennon, in his last interview, told Playboy magazine that the song was the beginning of a wider audience for Beatles' music than the youthful throngs that had fervently followed them from their Liverpool clubbing days. "It was only after a critic for the [London] Times said we put 'Aeolian cadences' in 'It Won't Be Long' that the middle classes started listening to us. . . . To this day, I have no idea what 'Aeolian cadences' are. They sound like exotic birds."
Actually the critic, William Mann, said this about the song "Not a Second Time."
Bob Dylan had much the same thing in mind when he wrote that Beatles chords were "outrageous, just outrageous."

Personnel

John Lennon – double-tracked vocal, rhythm guitar
Paul McCartney – backing vocal, bass
George Harrison – backing vocal, lead guitar
Ringo Starr – drums

Norman Smith – engineer

For us here in the United States, It Won't Be Long appeared on The Beatles' first Capitol LP release Meet The Beatles!...

It was the fourth song on Side 1.  The LP led off with I Want To Hold Your Hand.

This is a nice rocker by John.  I also noticed the descending chromatic notes in George's lead guitar riff.  It was very impressive as were the background vocals.  It quickly became a favorite on this LP which had only one cover song, Till There Was You.

It's worth a listen...

The Beatles - It Won't Be Long [Mono] (With The Beatles) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiTX6pVUGIc#)

I love that ending!!!

Stretching it a bit, I can see the play on the words "be long" and "belong."  But it's more obvious here...

Great opener, I've always loved it. I remember listening to it for the first time in the documental "The Compleat Beatles", and I liked it from that very moment. I already had several Beatles albums, but then I knew I had to buy With The Beatles too.

A great rocker. I didn't hear this til my teens as for some reason With the Beatles was the only LP my older brothers didnt have. I recall thinking at first it was written a bit to a formula. It seemed that the "yeah yeahs" were a bit of a signature they had to have at that stage. But as usual they throw so much good stuff in that it turns it into a great tune.

Great song that took awhile to grow on me!

Awesome playing the bass on it and singing along with John. There's certain Beatle songs where I can sound exactly like John when singing. Not many but a few, lol.

I can take or leave this one. I tend to favor the early Beatles songs, and I do adore the harmonies, but, like Snoopy66, the myriad "Yeah"s gets a little annoying to me.

Well, that sums it up, really.  One had to be around at the time to fully realize just how ubiquitous the "yeah, yeah, yeahs" really were.  I agree with you, Moog, that they were a bit of a signature for the group as were the "ooohs" and shaking of their hair.  It certainly got them noticed and no doubt was carefully planned.  And was certainly more benign than a toilet seat hung around the neck.

In 1964 we had Yeah Yeah Candy...

And Twist And Shout.  Those were the songs I liked when I first heard The Beatles in 1964.

I actually liked The Animals more in 1964 and 1965.  I liked the raw stuff Eric Burdon sang.

That's one awesome superman edition. Where did you find that??

It's funny to think back how much popular culture was influenced. I recall as a kid a Gilligan's Island episode where the island was visited by a mop topped besuited pop band. (How did they take so long to get off an island everyone seemed to be able to get to??)

I even recall a rather cringeworthy F Troop episode where the good looking love interest of the dopey officer did a folk rock version of Lemon Tree in front of a rock band. Odd for a show set in the 19 the century.

Yep. He had such a great voice for those type of tunes.

And not just rockers. He gave ballads such a great dimension.

One of the main things I took from the first BBC recordings was confirmation what a great pop/rock singer he was.

One of the things that first hooked me onto John as a singer was on Please Please Me (the song) when he says 'Come'on' 3 times and the others repeat it, the way John sings 'Come'on' is just awesome, I always really dug it, so goddam cool, so Rock & Roll, I still feel the same whenever I hear that.....

It's a great example. I think pretty much the entirety of the Please Please Me LP is a great testament to Johns singing. From Ask Me Why's croony style to the Twist and Shout throat shreading. That apparently even impressed the white coated engineers.
