The Beatles' Favourite Beatles Albums?
« on: February 14, 2009, 12:27:42 AM »

I was reading the liner notes for the Beatles' Capitol Albums Box Set Vol. 2, and there is a quote in there from George Harrison saying that Rubber Soul was his favourite Beatles album.

I also remember reading a year or so ago that Ringo Starr thought that Sgt. Pepper was overrated and that he thought the best Beatles album was either Revolver or The White Album (please correct me if I'm wrong on that one)

Anybody know any of the other Beatles' favourite Beatles albums?

I would guess Paul's might be Sgt. Pepper, and John's probably one of the early albums, but I really don't know.  And I'm not even sure what Ringo's favourite would be (what he thinks is the best might not necessarily be his favourite)

Probably the reason Ringo thought it was over rated was because he didn't do a whole heck of a lot during the sessions. IIRC, that was the album he learned to play chess on?

Yeah, I remember Ringo saying the same thing too.

George said that they knew that it was going to be a very good album while they were recording it.

George said he enjoyed Rubber Soul and Revolver.
Ringo said he loved the white album,
i always heard in interviews with paul that he loved the rubber soul
& revolver era so they could be some of his favs.
still not sure on John though.... :-/

on the anthologys george said that rubber soul and revolver were like mk.1 and mk.2(or something like that).what does anybody else think?i dont think the two albums are similar really.....revolver is superior dynamically.i also don't think the beatles ever bettered that guitar sound-she said she said,dr.robert-also paperback writer.that belongs on revolver sound-wise.

I have to disagree with George.  I don't think "RS" and "Revolver" are that much alike, and "Revolver" is a much stronger album IMO.

John talked a load of nonsense about Beatles albums. In his head Sgt Pepper was a turkey but The Two Virgins was his creative rebirth.

George: "Rubber Soul was my favourite album, even at that time. I think that it was the best one we made; we certainly knew we were making a good album. We did spend a bit more time on it and tried new things. But the most important thing about it was that we were suddenly hearing sounds that we weren't able to hear before. Also, we were being more influenced by other people's music and everything was blossoming at that time; including us, because we were still growing."

Paul's favourite album was with no doubt Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

I've read that John said that Sgt. Pepper's was a peak but he preferred the white album because in that record he was himself, though he didn't like the production.

And Ringo said that side two of Abbey Road was the best thing the band did.

See how selective their memories can be. It was made in 4 weeks so they'd make the Christmas market in Dec '65.

True, Rubber Soul was quickly recorded, but they were also experimenting much more than before: sitar, fuzz bass, tape loops...

john was certainly not very happy w/ "strawberry fields" in retrospect...but then again, he had a very fickle memory.

it certainly represented some of his best drumming.  but best thing as a band?  if one considers paul mccartney and george martin the band.  it was brilliantly produced, for sure.
