Out of those?? Dave! Definatly Dave. No contest. David Gilmour is highly underrated by the way. He's never really talked about like Clapton, Page, or even Eddie Van Halen of all people! He's very talented. When he was first around they compared him to Jimi Hendrix. That he could play like him or something. I can't remember the story now. Plus.........he's pretty too. ;D

you think hes better then george harrison even?
Title: Re: best guitarist out of these
Post by: Sondra on January 19, 2005, 03:51:14 AM
Yes. I think David is one of the best. While George is very good, I really haven't heard him do the kind of things Dave has done on songs like Shine On, Comfortably Numb (awesome live on Pulse!), Time etc...... But then the Beatles don't do extended guitar solos and instrumentals like Floyd did so who knows. Plus Dave played a lot of the bass parts on Floyd albums for Roger. (Hey You, Pigs) He won Roger a few bass poll awards along the way! Very talented man.

i think Dave the most talented guitarist out of those and is very underrated, but i chose Pete, right now Im too into The Who too not choose him, I just bought "Live at the leeds" so who wouldnt be into them if you just recently bought the best Live album of all-time?

Eric Clapton-the other guitarists are equally great as well but Clapton defines the guitar god.

George.

Maybe not technically the best one, I just like his style (a lot) better than that of the other ones.

Dave, I think clapton is more talented, but there is such emotion in DDaves playing.  The guitar crashing in on "Mother" is just incredible.

its a very floyd fanbase here, not to diminish the other guitarists.

but pete townshends playing has never been that incredible.  The windmill jamming is obviously very cool, but he doesnt compare witht he others imo.  maybe hes better than george

well there are only 4 choices in there, if you'd add Page, Hendrix, Frampton, Van Halen, Knopfler or any other famous guitarists it would have probably been pretty different...
and like hcys said, a lot of people really like floyd here...

Why do people say that Clapton is more talented than David Gilmour? I'm not being sarcastic here or anything I'm just curious. I know nothing about the technical aspects of guitar playing, but it seems to me that Dave could play anything Clapton could. I'm not sure what Clapton does that makes him superior. Any guitar players around here that care to elaborate on this? Seriously, cuz to me David Gilmour is amazingly talented. I'd call them equals I think. Oh, and why the nickname Slow Hand? Just curious.

Its a toss up with Gilmour and Clapton, but i'll take Clapton. Poor George, but i think he brings up the rear in this contest.

Have you heard "Crossroads" live?...that can explain why Clapton's so good
Title: Re: best guitarist out of these
Post by: Sondra on January 20, 2005, 02:28:19 AM
I know Clapton is good, I'm just not sure he's better than Dave. Technically that is. I've been a Clapton fan longer than a Floyd fan. I just think Dave is pretty talented. Live at Pompeii and Pulse are amazing. I still think they're pretty equal. Just have a different playing style.
Title: Re: best guitarist out of these
Post by: Herecomesyoursun on January 20, 2005, 02:44:37 AM
Miss Macca- he is named slowhand not as a snide remark about his slow playing but out of respect. When he was doing shows with the Yardbirds and Cream (during the Clapton is God phase) he would often bend strings so violently that they would snap. therefore the other members of the ban would lead the audience in slow hand clapping while he got a new guitar or restrung his current one.
Title: Re: best guitarist out of these
Post by: Sondra on January 20, 2005, 02:55:34 AM
I know it's a complimentary nickname! I just have never heard how he got the nickname!! I have never heard that but it's a very cool story. I had no idea. Clapton is an AWESOME guitarist. I'm in no way saying he's not by putting Gilmour up there with him. Mainly because Dave is also an AMAZING guitarist. I think they're equal. Is that an insult to Clapton? Because I don't mean it to be. I was just wondering what Clapton does that makes him technically better. I'm not a guitar player so I don't know.

I love Dave too, I think hes underrated too, but Clapton isnt overrated(not that you said that)...yeah, i own Live At Pompeii and dave is amazing on it, Nick mason too, all of them were amazing, as usual, I love the "Echoes" peformance
Title: Re: best guitarist out of these
Post by: Sondra on January 20, 2005, 05:25:01 AM
I was watching That 70's Show yesterday and two of the characters (Eric and Hyde) were asked to draw a picture of God and they both drew Eric Clapton! I thought that was funny. Wonder when the whole Clapton is God thing started? He must be good to have invoked that response in people!

Echoes on the Pompeii DVD is very cool. I love it. Wish they would have shown him doing more recording for Dark Side though. Have you seen Pulse? He's amazing. And he's not even in his prime on it. Well, maybe he's still in his prime I don't know. Wonder if age effects guitar playing like it does the voice!

He's never really talked about concerning his guitar playing so I don't think he's overrated. He's known more for his song writing ability and wild style of playing than he is for being a top guitar player. He's probably better than people think.

I can't believer Gilmour got as many votes as he did! I didn't think he would because people automatically go for Clapton everytime.  It's sort of been force fed to us about how great he is. Gilmour gets little attention compared to Clapton, Page, and Hendrix. Wonder how Keith Richards compares to these guys.

Weren't we having a similar conversation in another thread?

Dave is great. I'm not sure if underrated is the right word, given the fame of Pink Floyd. But, he's massively better than Harrison was, plus a host of others. Gilmour's playing is fantastically emotional, and suits Waters' more ranting emotional moments (The Wall) perfectly well. On The Wall, he sounds suitably angry on On Thin Ice, suitably lustful on Young Lust, suitably distraught on Comfortably Numb, etc.

George's guitar playing is very distinct. I mean, it seems to have a certain sound to it. He does a great slide guitar doesn't he? But I think the others stand out more. George won of course cuz he's a Beatle and we're on a Beatle site, but when you're really honest about it, I don't think he'd come out on top. Clapton is incredible. There's no doubt about it. I think the thing that puts him over Dave is that he can play very fast as well. Dave's even admitted that's not his strength. But Dave's playing is so much more emotional. He really conveys feeling in his playing. I like listening to his solos. And I'm not one for solos much. And not just the solos, but the playing through songs like Money, Echoes, or Shine On is mesmerizing. How erie is that intro! Perfect. So anyway, I still go for David Gilmour. I think he's the best singer up there to. I love George on certain songs, but not all. Especially the early stuff. Sorry. Clapton's voice is good for what he does. That blues rock. He sounds like an old blues guy or something.

^^yep i completley agree especially on the album 'from the cradle' by clapton you can hear his distinctive bluesy old man's voice really well, he has a really unique and brillaint voice for that style of music..harrisons alright i prefer some of the old solos on ealy beatles records ('i saw her standing there') rather than his later solo stuff where he didnt really seem to express him self very well on terms of the guitar..he didnt really show off;he was obviously the right person for the beatles though.

I was not there but according to In Blue Hawaii here:
http://dmbeatles.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-harrison/m-1112247456/

Quote from: MagicAlex
According to Tom Petty, George could also "knock the sh*t out of the blues". Petty was visiting Hari a few years before his death and the two of them started jamming and George just started playing the blues like a madman. When TP asked him why he has never done a blues guitar type record George responded with a wink and a grin "Well Tom, that's Eric's thing"

Maybe George was able to do things we didn't know ...

Dave = I dont think he's as technically gifted as Clapton, but had his own unique tone and made his guitar make noises that no one was doing at the time
Eric = Technically more gifted than the rest, but just plain dull and once youve heard one Clapton guitar line/solo youve heard them all and never changed up his sound much
Pete = Not as technically good as the two before, more creative than Eric with sounds but not as much as Dave, solid Rhythm player.
George = Not in the same league as these guys imo, decent rhythm player, mediocre solo's, quite creative, i've never understood why he is rated as highly as he is ? is it The Beatles connection ? or its cool to name check him ?

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! that was a bad one for George from you... WHY? a decent rhythm playing? he wasn't even the rhythm guitarist in The Beatles (Lennon was). mediocre solo's? he made many great solos, why you call it mediocre? of course Paul have made some better solos like taxman or good morning good morning, but to call George's solo's mediocre? YES at least you understand that he was quite creative/versatile guitarist. and when he was rated as guitarist so high? he was underrated, I have never seen him in any high rating, where you have seen it, lol?

I know Lennon was the rhythm guitarist and George was lead, but i don't rate him much on his riffs/solo's lead work and i think rhythm is his best qaulity thats why i mentioned rhythm

I also think theyre bass player was a better guitarist than him.

I said i Don't understand why he is rated as highly as he is, you say he isnt rated that highly, i still think that is too high, imo he shouldnt be making it into the top 100 guitarist polls.

and i mean the ones where they are judged purely on playing and not on there influence of being one of the first popular lead guitarists in a huge influential band

Clapton performing Further On Up the Road with the Band. About 55 seconds in his guitar strap comes undone in the middle of his soloing and, effortlessly, Robbie Robertson picks it up right where he left off and proceeds to turn out some not too shabby guitar work himself. What a pro. Talk about underrated. When do you ever hear his named mentioned? But anyway, Clapton is awesome, but I feel a lot of his work has the same sort of sound to it. All bluesy and stuff.

Yeah if you look about now there a loads and loads of players playing the same old blues licks that clapton was playing back then but better and some can play faster which may not be everyones cup of tea but it makes them technically better, dont get me wrong he is a good player but would he have been as succesfull today amongst all these more proficient players and was his success down to the fact he was one of only a few white men playing blues good at that time and so is creeping into these lists purely on influence more than skill just like i feel with harrison.

no, probably you got me wrong. you just don't understand... everything is in soul not about the speed, riffs or solos. George was not the fastest one or not the riff one or not the technical one or not the solo one, but he had a deep soul in his guitar so and in his belief/religion. 21th place for George in the greatest guitarists list is very great, why you disagree with that? Kurt Cobain at 12th place, you know it? he made some of the easiest riffs ever made, he just tuned his guitar to look like he was playing very heavyish. or, Keith Richards, he's at 10th place while Jimmy Page is at 9th place? what a bullsh*t, Keith Richards is soooooooo overrated and Page is just one step higher than he? Jack White at 17th? lol pfffff!!! John Frusciante at 18th place? who the heck is he, lol? why you can't blame it on those untalented guitarists who are way higher than George? but NOOOOOOOOOO, now you have to say that George was untalented, right? give me a break, George rules!

All of my favourite guitarists play with feeling and arent technically the best, guys like John Frusciante,Hendrix..... but the question was who is better and of the four Harrison is the weakest technically and playing with sould doesnt make up for it, its all good playing with feeling but you still have to have some skill.

Hendrix is technically great and has so much feeling in his playing
Harrison is not technically great and from what i could see looked to be playing the instrument like another guitarist from the early 60's, he may have been feeling it inside but didnt express it the same way hendrix did.

Anyways Clapton,Gilmour and maybe even Townshend play with more feeling then Harrison so he still comes last imo - one of the main things about playign with feeling is just playing and seeing where the music takes you and not the other way round, Harrison played  his solo's note for note the same as on his albums thats not feeling thats just a robot ;)

Jimi Hendrix's performance of the 'star spangled banner' at Woodstock proves to me how much of an amazing guitarist he is. He said so much about the Vietnam War, and every other issue going on in the world all in his guitar playing. He's not my favorite guitarist, but I can't deny the fact that he's the greatest guitarist of all time.
