Lennon was ridiculously self-conscious about wearing glasses in the years leading up to fame and into the Beatlemania years.
Probably more self-conscious than anybody has ever been about anything.

If so, he truly had the mentality of a gnat.  More I read and learn about the guy, the more I wonder how he wasn't living in some padded room.  No wonder he did drugs.

I've read in more than one book that John loathed his glasses and refused to wear them. (Naturally, I can't remember the specific books in which I read this.) I recall, too, a quote from Pete Shotton, I believe, about how John would shoplift (records? I wish I had a searchable database of what I've read) and pick up the wrong items because his vision was so poor.

John had a number of factors in his life that contributed to his often unfortunate behavior and I really think his vision was a big one. Even with glasses or contacts it wasn't great. It wasn't just that he disliked having to wear the glasses (which he did), daily life is a struggle when you can't see well. Add that to the losses he suffered and his general personality type and it's no wonder he had problems.

I would have thought it was obvious.....it showed Lennon that he too could be a pop star if someone who looked like Buddy Holly, rather than Elvis Presley, could. It also showed Hank Marvin the same thing.

I very much agree with this, good points. Buddy was the first rock star that people truly could relate to, because he was more about craft and less about charisma/image. He's the artists whose death I feel the saddest about, even more than Lennon's, because he was so young (f***ing 22) and could've achieved so much in the future. And 'Not Fade Away' is pretty much how rock 'n' roll should be played and sung for me, pure perfection.
