British Bands & Artists

The big ones;

Beatles
Stones
Led Zep
Queen
Pink Floyd
Elton John
David Bowie
Moody Blues
The Kinks
Emerson Lake & Palmer
Cream
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Eric Clapton
Yes
Oasis
Coldplay
Adele

and a host of lesser names like Sade, The Searchers, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Hermans bloody Hermits etc etc

My question is why is there so much musical talent from this small island nation of 60 million people ? is it something in the tea & cucumber sandwiches ? ;)

 Take off the last two.

And you forgot the Who

The Brits have produced the best comedy in the world too!

I don't agree they all have musical talent, but they have a popularity indeed.
I wondered too why so many pop music is from England. I think it is just suitable conditions (time, language, same minded people, mode).
Why the greatest operas were written in Italy and Germany?

As a Brit it's nice to acknowledge that people from elsewhere around the globe still regard dear old blighty as a hotbed of creative talent. I suppose we've always been a receptive cultural sponge, good naturedly mopping up the best of whatever drifts our way and putting our own unique, eccentric spin on it. The obvious example is The Beatles of course, and the momentum and originality they kick started turned us into the engine room of modern pop music, a badge of honour we still strive to live up to today.

Being an island we have a strong seige mentality with an inbuilt resilience and self-reliance. The spirit of the showbiz trouper is deeply ingrained within the British psyche. Since the Jack The Ripper era of Victorian Music Hall, through the bleak horrors of the First World War then the dark days of the Blitz followed by post-war ration-book austerity, the three day week, power cuts and numerous recessions in the decades that followed, we have grown accustomed to making our own entertainment and have weathered grim times by turning to our own home-grown humour and our music.

Which brings me to one group who had a distinctly tongue in cheek attitude to the craziness of the 60s pop scene and who are always criminally overlooked whenever talk turns to "The British Invasion", despite being an early part of that vanguard of talent which swept across the pond fifty years ago. They were as bluesy as The Stones, less gritty than The Animals but cooler than Herman's Hermits, as catchy as the Hollies and as quirky as the Kinks, with the energy of The Dave Clark Five. OK so they churned out their fair share of cover versions and their leader was South African, but they were a distinctly British, London based blend of R&B, pop and jazz (at least to begin with).... so just for once, let's hear it for the wonderful:

Manfred Mann!!!   ;) 8)

What a great concert that was!!!  Thanks for posting that, Kev.  My best regards to Chris!

They play my very favorite song at 4:29

When you walk in the room - The Searchers

When You Walk In The Room affects me the same way every time I hear it...exactly the way it did the first time I heard it in 1964...

Baby it's a dream come true
Standin' right along side of you
Wish I could tell you how much I care
But I only have the nerve to stare

I can feel a something pounding in my brain
Just anytime that someone speaks your name
Trumpets sound and I hear thunder boom
Every time that you walk in the room

Who can forget those coming of age feelings?!

And cheers to Jackie DeShannon for writing that song...

When You Walk in the Room - Jackie de Shannon

I agree Barry; that's a very powerful song whether you first hear it at 14 or 40-something like I did.

Whether the song was sung from a male or female point of view, it was equally powerful.

No one has mentioned The Tremeloes...

The Tremeloes - Silence is Golden

They formed in 1958.  On 1 January 1962....well, y'all know the story.
