I agree on both counts. A review in the San Francisco Chronicle (https://datebook.sfchronicle.com/movies-tv/john-lennon-murder-documentary-18530852; (https://datebook.sfchronicle.com/movies-tv/john-lennon-murder-documentary-18530852;) I'm pretty sure this is not behind a paywall) suggests that Lennon fans may at least like to watch the first part:

It’s told in three parts, and the first is the most interesting, because Lennon is alive for most of it. We hear excerpts from his last interview, on the day of his death on Dec, 8, 1980, in which he says that he hopes to be around for a long, long time. And we see his record producer, Jack Douglas, talking about how happy Lennon was.

I don't have access to Apple TV+ so for me it's a moot point.
