Favorite artists, and how are they organized?
« on: January 09, 2010, 01:56:04 AM »

Yes, another thread about unnecessary organization. Sue me. :P

A lot of people have a favorite band, or a few favorite bands, and a lot of people will try to organize their favorites into a numerical list, like

1. The Beatles
2. The Beach Boys
3. Insane Clown Posse
4. Simon & Garfunkel
etc.

I don't usually think about things like bands or foods or whatever in such a numerical way, as the order will change with my mood, so for a long time I just had bands that I liked and bands that I didn't like. Then I thought about how much I listened to various artists, and how much I enjoyed their work, and I realized that my favorite musical artists sort of organized themselves into a tiered structure.

Tier 1 is my absolute favorite bands, who there may be a very small number of songs by them I don't like, but I love very nearly all their songs. For me, this is The Beatles and They Might Be Giants.

Tier 2 is the artists that I have heard a good amount of their material and liked most of it a lot and even loved a good portion, but who had some songs or albums that were just okay. For me, this is The Who, Rammstein, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Nobuo Uematsu, Queen, and Radiohead.

Tier 3 is all the other artists who I like much of their material, and may even own a few albums, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get their entire catalogue.

Tier 4 is artists I don't like. :P

The only real outliers are Billy Joel and The Rolling Stones. I used to like them a whole lot and would have put them in tier 2, and thus I have a lot of their records, but now I more or less put them in tier 3. Billy Joel is closer to tier 2 than the Stones, though.

How, if at all, would you organize the artists you listen to? Maybe give some examples?

Hmm.... It always changes, so this is the "At the moment" esqe posts.

1) The Beatles
2) Bob Dylan
3) The Who
4) Green Day (I know, smite me now)
5) Rolling Stones
6) David Bowie
7) Pink Floyd
That's all I can come up with right now. But like I said, it changes.

2) Pink Floyd
3) Breaking Benjamin
4) Queen
5) System of a Down

I like all kinds of music, and it's very hard to pick favorite bands.  ;D

I've only recently realized that I'm really picky about "favorites" when it comes to music. I've never really had an all-time favorite band before the Beatles, except for Eric Clapton who was more like a religion because I've been listening to him since the womb. If I were to go by your tier system I'd probably put the Beatles and Clapton in tier 1.

List-wise, it'd have to be:

1. The Beatles
2. Eric Clapton
3. Queen
4. Journey
5. The Traveling Wilburys

I like a lot of bands/singers, but I've never really had "favorites" other than those five.

And that's not counting the solo music of the Fabs... :)

Tier 1 is The Beach Boys. They're in a league of their own.

Tier 2 would be the bands that I "collect". Which means I have all the regular albums on CD and/or vinyl, plus all the other stuff (bootlegs, singles, rare pressings, solo releases etc.) that I can find for a reasonable price. Those bands would be The Beatles, No Use For A Name, Elliott Smith, Shelter, Ignite, Gorilla Biscuits, Beastie Boys, Tiger Army, NOFX, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Green Day, Minor Threat, As Friends Rust, H2O, Propagandhi, Youth Of Today, Bayside, Lagwagon and Undeclinable Ambuscade.

Tier 3 would be bands that I love but that I don't necessarily need to have complete (sometimes just because their discographies are too sizeable). That's really too many bands to list, but most prominently Cat Stevens, Elvis and The Doors.

My LPs and CDs are on shelves in alphabetical order by group or artist name.  That's the extent of my organization.
