This band has decided to write one of the best cds of 2005! They just keep cranking out hit after hit off their American Idiot cd!!! It's nice to see a bit of fresh ideas in the music business!
-
I love their first 3 albums, everything else they did is to my opinion OK but not much more than that...
On their earlier work they sound like a young and enthousiastic band to me, on the more recent released they sound like a professional band that capably repeats the same old trick... They're still good at it, but the spirit is just different.

Fresh ideas? Bands like the Buzzcocks and the Descendents did pretty much the same thing 25 years ago...
-
Oh, and American Idiot is from 2004, so it can't be one of the best CDs of 2005. :)
-
green days back on top, and suck at it
-

Oooh, I absolutely LOVE the Buzzcocks!! Also, have a listen to Stiff Little Fingers they are VERY Green Day sounding :)
-
I like American Idiot, however it's been too... I dunno... hyped, for me to properly enjoy it. I tend to stay away from most things that are too mainstream. Not really a great thing to do, but...

I know, I already own a few SLF albums. :)

Concept cd yes the "punk part" no the concept part! If you listen to this cd there are more hard rock songs on here then "punk" AS the band stated we just want to be a popular "Rock Band" not necessarly "punk".

Well having said that I guess you can "appreciate" the fact that the "2004" Cd is still going strong in "2005" and seems to be no stopping it!!!
-
AI is a great album. Nimrod and Dookie still are on top of my list tho

Yeah, and Pet Sounds and Sgt. Peppers are also still great albums in 2005...

forget american idiot, radiohead's coming up with a new album!!
-
Is this not the " Other Bands" of interest section of the "Beatle's form"????
I think Indica's point is that the Beatles are mainstream. :)
-
I meant today's mainstream. Like the top forty.
-

Okay, now THAT I'm interested in. I don't think Green Day is on the top of anything. If ever they were on the top, it was in the 90's. They're making a big mistake marketing this album the way they are. All the cell phone commercial ads and crap. It's making them seem very ordinary. I'm not crazy about American Idiot. I think they were going for some great new innovative thing claiming it to be a "Punk Opera." It didn't quite have the same impact on today's pop culture as Tommy did now did it?
-
Wow, they did cell phone commercials? Well I didn't know that. That's not very punk.
-
Not them personaly, but their stupid music from that album. Get the Green Day ring tone! Stun all your friends! Blah, blah, blah!
-
I don't like those cell phone commercials. They use songs to make it seem like artists are promoting their company. Rogers Wireless was giving out tickets to the Avril Lavigne concert and they were making it look like she was hawking for their company. Which she would never do. For any company. But anyways.
-

True "Tommy" is a masterpiece from a band that mirrors Green day in that "Green Day" is associated with "punk moovement" and the "Who" had their own movement called "Mods"!
-
Wow, they did cell phone commercials? Well I didn't know that. That's not very punk.
"YOU" missed the whole point of the new Green Day as ststed by the lead singer they don't want to be the best "PUNK" band they want to be the best "BAND" going that's out there! Punk scene is only a small fraction of the music buying public! They now want it all!!!!!!!
-
'course, there are some high school bands that do nothing but cover Green Day. It doesn't take much to learn the American Idiot singles, really. Because they hadn't heard of the band until that album came out (much like The Who and Tommy in a way. :o) . . .
I guess Green Day was trying to say something with American Idiot -- I haven't sat down and listened to the whole thing, just parts of the CD, but... the kids covering it generally have no idea what htey meant. And it's lame to cover "punk" if you don't get it. Like that. Yeah. Shutting up now. :D
PS: September's way over, someone should seriously wake them up now.
-
I was surprised at how successful that single was. To be honest, I thought St. Jimmy would've been more commercially successful.
-
God is every song from that damn CD gonna be a single?? and when does Radiohead plan to release?
-
I like their recent album the best. It's got more distinction. They are definitly improving. It beats the other stuff they are playing on the radio recently (or should I say overplaying) but then again they are overplayed a bit over here but they are the better out of the overplayed. If that made any since...
-
Wow, they did cell phone commercials? Well I didn't know that. That's not very punk.
I wonder who has the copyrights... They might not have had any say in it...
And wouldn't punk be doing whatever the hell you please?
-
I didn't heard Green Day until American Idiot. This album is really ROCKs!!! I'm listening to not much modern music and there is only two artists I like for the present Green Day and Franz Ferdinand. Now listening to Bullet in a Bible! I'll buy a DVD for sure!
-
Now listening to Bullet in a Bible! I'll buy a DVD for sure!
Bullet In A Bible is a CD + DVD package... Or did you download it?
And I still think any of the first three Green Day album EASILY kicks American Idiot's ass.
-
Yes, I downloaded it.
I have Dookie also, but A.I. like more.
-
Nimrod is my favorite GD album followed by Dookie and Kerplunk
-
^thats where its at. those three are all i need. screw when september ends
-
I think I like Insomniac best
-
forget american idiot, radiohead's coming up with a new album!!
A sugarcoated Pink Floyd with less expierimentally courage and more pop-friendliness.
And relating to Green Day, American Idiot is NOT punk. Much to artsy. Holiday has a Watersian political metaphor sprayed throughout well Wake Me Up When September ends is a more folky, Dylanesque work, and American Idiot is an overt rip-off of The Clash. Then there's a progish ballad in Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, and St. Jimmy a McCartney-ish rocker, albeit "punked up".
Throughout their careers Green Day have compromised their brilliant musicianship by exploiting what a young generation percieves to be Punk. Although they are great, they claim to be something they are not so that high schoolers will continue to buy their records.
-
who cares if they're punk or not. It's about the music
-

I agree. I've always sensed more of an Angus Young in Billie Joe than a Johnny Rotten.
-
Ummm, if a band has been abround for ten years and had how many platinum records, then that's the antithesis of punk, Not that I'm into the classification game anyway.
-
I think I like Insomniac best
Really? I was so dissapointed when it came out... It has my favorite Green Day song (Armatage Shanks), but apart from that I don't think it's really good...

My favorite Green Day song is easily Brain Stew. I'm on AderholXR so that's what I think of when I hear of it.

their much less pop friendly than green day. theyre a great band
-
I heard Billie Joe says he wants to cover the album Wish You Were Here! Wish You were freaking Here!
-

I think it's the same thing as with art... If you think what you're making is art, then it's art. If you think what you're making is punk, then it's punk.
If it's also good art or good punk is always a whole different issue of course.
-
Your thoughts....
Stiff Little Fingers rip offs or punk geniis? <------ that's the plural of geniuses!! ;D
-
I don't think they're just SLF rip offs. I think they were just as much influenced by the Ramones, the Buzzcocks and the earlier Lookout bands.
I don't know if they're geniis (nice word...). I used to think not because their music is so simple, but after years of writing songs myself I found out that writing a dozen good three chord songs is probably much harder than writing a dozen good songs without any limitations...
-
i think they suck..(sorry-americanism)
-
i second that. and American Idiot sucked ass as a "protest" song. protest my ass. just a great way to cash in
-

Why can't people just accept that there actually are some rock stars that are greatful that they've got a platform to express their opinions, and want to use it for what they consider important issues?
And still I'd rather hear half-harted political songs than that dumb rock jock nonsense that people like Fred Durst of Kid Rock write...
-

yeah, also, immature title, lyrics...they should act there age now, how old are they? proberly bout 40 now, so i think they should really forget it..plus they suck ass at their instruments.
-
Say what you want the guys know how to write "hit" songs! They have staged prehaps the biggest comeback in the History of Rock! Sold out concerts along with millions in record sales! They deserve every penny of it!

-
Kyoko was staying with you PC?
-
I just like American Idiot cuz it's really catchy. I like that guitar riff. A lot of their songs are catchy.
-
The thing that really stands out about this cd is how a band who didn't bring out a cd for 5 years could write something as good from a rock/song standpoint. The band also cleverly ran the videos in succession to tell a biger story about the cd. Green Day were pretty well written off in the world of rock and they returned with a multimillion selling cd and sold out tour !
-
you got paid to say that i bet.....
-
"No" just a casual observation of clever marketing.
-
Maybe during the first couple of albums they were inclined to resurrect Punk, but they were never Grunge. Now that they're selling millions and winning Grammies and s**t, I would consider them more pop.
And for the record, Green Day I don't think they suck, I actually enjoy some of their recent songs but favor the early ones.
-
meh i dont dislike them to the same point i dislike the cheeky girls but i would never by any of there stuff, if i can remember dookie had some good tracks.
-
Anybody interested in their new album ¡Uno! (http://www.dmrockmusic.com/Uno!)
(http://www.dmrockmusic.com/assets/images/thumbnails/artist_65_disk_1445_1_w250.jpg) (http://www.dmrockmusic.com/Uno!)
Did you listen to it? What do you think?
I see only one nice song Kill The DJ roll:)
-
I like it. After two albums of dramatic, over-the-top rock opera crap I think it's refreshing that they returned to the good, simple, old-fashioned punk pop formula. And how can you not like a song like Oh Love, Dmitry?
-
they returned to the good, simple...
I read that people like this albums because of that reason. And maybe for the same reason I don't like it much.
I have listen to the album only two times. I don't see something special in Oh Love, nice hooks, simple music for background activity but not for getting off it. I mean it doesn't turn me on.
-
Been listening to a lot of Green Day lately - I think the new album is really good.
Oh Love is a great song - and I like "Stay The Night" as well.
Sounds like they have been listening to The Clash to steal a few riffs though (which isn't a bad thing!).
Listen to the start of Fell For You and then listen to I Fought The Law.....
Green Day - Fell For You (HD Quality) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_5xJSL3YUE#)
The Clash- I Fought The Law (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsS0cvTxU-8#)

They look stupid. A bunch of 40 year olds doing some pop punk act. I like the classics, now it just sounds old hat and formulaic.
They should change up their act and do something a bit more sombre and wrinkly.
-
40 years olds, indeed. Just remember what each of the Beatles did before they passed 40 years mark, not mention here Mozart ;D
-
They had a few good hits in the 90's. They now look ridiculous.
