Oh, my list is nowhere near complete.  Like I said, 1971 was an amazing year for music.

Tapestry is great of course, Imagine rates about 10th on my list, Who's next just outside the top 5 with Fragile by Yes

The band name is very vaguely familiar. Can't say I know the album though.

Elton John just missed my list. Not to mention Sticky a Fingers and Aqualung.

Rod Stewarts Every Picture Tells a Story was good as well. And Teaser and the Firecat by Cat Islam or whatever he's called.

Yes had 2 albums that year, Fragile & The Yes Album, Fragile is better known I think but The Yes Album is most Yes fans favourite with tracks like Yours Is No Disgrace

I second Tapestry, both Yes albums, and America and add The Carpenters, Jesus Christ Superstar and All Things Must Pass.  I was probably the only kid in my third grade class who listened to these. LOL Well, actually All Things Must Pass came later. I'm sure there's more but these are the ones that come to mind.

I'm obviously wildly out of sync on this one but if I must enter the decade of the dreary.....you note that I've steered clear of the 'stadium rock/cocaine guzzling/heavy management/dinosaur acts/bad clothes and hair' end of the market.

1. Bert Jansch - 'Rosemary Lane'
2. Anne Briggs - 'Anne Briggs'
3. Anne Briggs - 'The Time Has Come'
4. Serge Gainsbourg - 'Histoire de Melody Nelson'
5. Gong - 'Continental Circus' soundtrack (what an amazing film!)
6. Thin Lizzy - 'Thin Lizzy' (not hard rock, the folky version of the group)
7. 'Get Carter' soundtrack
8. 'Performance' soundtrack (strictly from 1970, but the film started dribbling out (!) in 1971)
9. The Pink Floyd - 'Relics' compilation
10. When it comes to The Beatles I'd plump for 'Ram' though I did recently get rid of the CD because I couldn't really see myself listening to it any time soon. Kept the LP though.

Definitely Aqualung! I saw them do it at The Boston Garden for their Songs from the Wood Tour!

I mentioned Bert Jansch whose version of 'Blackwaterside' was, in the words of wikipedia...ahem...'copied and adapted' by one Jimmy Page.
But, alas not...ahem...'copied and adapted' enough to cop a writing credit in Led Zep world!
He wouldn't be the last.

Have you heard Thick As A Brick 2 from a couple of years ago Kev? Not Tull but an Ian Anderson solo release...a worthy follow up to the brilliant original in my opinion. I too love Heavy Horses (and the studio releases either side of it) Jethro Tull were on fire back then.

I'm quite surprised neither Hunky Dory (Bowie) nor Electric Warrior (T Rex) have been mentioned so far.

One of the more proggy CDs I used to own dates from '71: In The Land Of Grey And Pink by Caravan. Quite liked that one for a while but eventually went off it, not sure why.

Ahh yes, the Land Of Grey & Pink, I love that album, so quintessentially British, but I prefer the one before it by Caravan, the album with the longest name ever  'If I Could Do It All Over Again Id Do It All Over You'
Caravan were a bit of a cult following like Supertramp, but with great musicians and great writing. They had some flutey typw sounds like Tull but Id say more Symphonic than Tull

No I havent heard the Anderson version of 'Brick' I will look out for that

Deep Purple made Fireball in 71 and good solid albums from Cat Stevens, Rod Stewart & Rory Gallagher

Not only my favorite album from 1971, but also my favorite album by the Who!

I think I'll do a Microscope of that album.
