Title: Paperback Writer
Post by: Spiritinthesky on June 23, 2014, 06:07:09 AM
23rd June 1966, The Beatles had their tenth consecutive UK No.1 single with 'Paperback Writer' / 'Rain'. The track is marked by the boosted bass guitar sound throughout, partly in response to John Lennon demanding to know why the bass on a certain Wilson Pickett record far exceeded the bass on any Beatles records. It was also cut louder than any other Beatles record, due to a new piece of equipment used in the mastering process.

An awesome song, one of my favorites.  I believe it is overlooked, as many of the singles are over time because they weren't on albums too.

I've mentioned it many times but the harmonizing and using their voices as instruments is incredible.

Do I recall that in an earlier post it was said that Paul played the lead guitar on this one too?!

There seems to be a bit of discrepency over who played what Dave.

Love this song, one of my absolute favorites by the Beatles. I like the harmonized a capella intro and then the segue into the musical part. The whole song is good!

But it was far out! And hilarious. I should have known Stevie Riks had something to do with it.

I know you didn't, Dave.  But I don't remember the echo effect used in Paperback Writer being "controversial" in any way.  We were used to early tape delays going back to the 1950s.  Sun Records mixed several Elvis Presley songs with delay like...

Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PotB76gi2_4#)

Analog tape delay was used for George Harrison's...

The Beatles- 14- Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby (2009 Mono Remaster) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJaQ37lcWjM#)

Recording The Beatles gets into this in detail.

What I remember most about the echo effect in Paperback Writer was that it was similar to another song which was recorded and released around the same time...

NAPOLEON XIV THEY'RE COMING TO TAKE ME AWAY HA-HAAA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyXCkjMBK70#)
