« on: February 03, 2014, 04:14:03 AM »

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of The British Invasion.  Here are a few of my favorites from 1964...

My second favorite British Invasion band. I adore these guys!

I like Gerry and the Pacemakers too but I don't know who that guy is on the stool.  ;)

I haven't decided whether to get it or not but the latest edition of 'Record Collector' is covering The British Invasion.

.....and today (20/3/64) is the 50th anniversary of arguably the most anticipated Beatles release of all, 'Can't Buy Me Love' / 'You Can't Do That'. Why haven't Apple re-released it like they did in 1984?

The original pairing in a new picture sleeve, but one in keeping with the era (and not 'limited' so as to keep away the eBay crowd) would have had me going into HMV today.

STOP PRESS!
Almost missed it, but on April 4th 1964 The Beatles had the Top 5 singles on the Billboard Chart.
Didn't they later in the year go one better and have the Top 6 singles in New Zealand?

Yep, oldbrownshoe plus 7 more spots within the Top 100. Not too shabby!

April 16th marks the 50th Anniversary of the release of the first Stones LP.

That's the one with this track-listing:
Route 66 / I Just Want To Make Love To You / Honest I Do / Mona / Now I've Got A Witness / Little by Little ///
/// I'm A King Bee / Carol / Tell Me / Can I Get A Witness / You Can Make It If You Try / Walking the Dog.

NOT the one with 'Not Fade Away' on it.
Confused?

April 16th also brings to attention the biggest scandal in pop music circa 2014 (hasn't got much to beat), namely that you can't buy 'The Rolling Stones', or its follow up, 'No. 2', on CD.

Regardless of the merits of the 2009 Beatles releases, imagine if Apple had put out all The Beatles LPs except for 'Please Please Me' and 'With The Beatles'.....!

I like the way those two tracks ended up next to each other. The only way that could have been better is if there was a song called "Really?" to put in between them.  ;)

Yeah, there is something quite knowing about that. Also, wouldn't you think that 'Now I've Got A Witness' would come after 'Can I Get A Witness'?
The British LP is virtually flawless and yet, with no CD on the shelf, it can almost be regarded as a rarity in 2014. Bizarre.

I'll raise a glass to them on Wednesday, and I'll do the same on June 19th when the next Beatles' 50th comes along, the (rather forgotten and under-valued) 'Long Tall Sally' EP.
Now wouldn't it be nice if Apple did something on that day.......

The anniversary of The Stones' debut is now today.

Forget the tatty glam/stadium stuff that has been set in stone for well over four decades now, THIS is The Stones; mean, lean, young and raring to go.....accept no substitute.

However, even if it is apparently available to download, I wonder how many people in Britain actually have the proper UK track-listing to play?
Not many, I'd wager. Disgraceful state of affairs.

David Hepworth on his blog has described 'The Rolling Stones' as the greatest debut LP of all time and, despite my love for 'Please, Please Me' (my fave Fabs LP), I'm inclined to agree with him.

However, the amount of Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Elmore James etc. etc. LPs and CDs which have been bought as a result of that record in the last 50 years, is probably its greatest achievement.
