When I learned to play guitar, I had a hard time making my guitar sound like Joni's.  When I saw her in concert in 1970, I discovered why.  Joni Mitchell uses several tuning patterns, about fifty in all.  You can see her tuning to an open D pattern in the Big Yellow Taxi video.  She also blew me away when she would occasionally bar her open chords upside down as she does in The Circle Game video.

This instructional video shows how Joni Mitchell plays Big Yellow Taxi.  I think the guitarist is magnificent...

You're not the only one, Hello Goodbye.
Fairport Convention covered 'I Don't Know Where I Stand' and 'Chelsea Morning' on their '68 debut LP, and 'Eastern Rain' on a '69 (the first of three albums they released in '69!) LP. Talk about getting into Joni early.....

Joni Mitchell  Both Sides Now

As I watched this I couldn't figure out what was different about her then it dawned on me; I've never seen her wearing makeup before. I wonder whose idea that was. I think she always looked nice without it.

For TV, I guess.  Same with Mary Travers.

Coupled with the bangs, Joni looked about sixteen in that video.

Aw, yeah she does. Too bad my bangs don't make me look sixteen.  :)

KE, although she wrote Both Sides Now in early 1967, we didn't hear Joni's recording until she released her Clouds LP in 1969.

Judy Collins recorded Both Sides Now shortly after it was written and included it on her Wildflowers LP.  The single was a big hit here in the fall of 1968...

We all loved that version.  It was fun to fall in love with that song all over again when we heard, and saw, Joni Mitchell sing it the following year.

Fairport Convention - Chelsea Morning 1968 Remastered[/url]

Love those first few Fairport Convention albums. Pity they took too much of a traditionalist turn. Once Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny left it really was a different band. Seemed almost false advertising to use the same name given the consciously different approach.
